This is gonna sound odd, but that background image I believe is meant to show a desire by the bydo to meld and assimilate with humans as part of their invasion. I always saw it as what a metaphor for what the Bydo desired and planned for the humans as part of their conquest.

@matrixandraia If you look at the final charge up at 6:33, the energy build up is yellow and centers on the fighter, instead of being blue and in front. I would guess that the pilot is overloading the fighter's engine/trans-dimensional drive to deliver the blast. That's would explain the broken charge meter, the sacrifice & floating down the tunnel after the battle.

Indeed it is. My favorite rtype music ever though is the third stage from the first game, where you're fighting the big mothership. R-type final 2 has a remix to the song on the same stage and it is also great, but the original is best. Also, stage 2 from the original is a close 2nd best.
