In this video we take a look at the gorgeous Leopard 1 Main Battle Tank on a training live fire exercise. The tanks are going through a gun run exercise where they test the skills of their crews to maintain competency and skill set for gunnery, loading and commanding of the tank.

This is a danish leo 1, it aint in service anymore but this is a crew of old veterans who keep them running. We have a day in denmark where we bring out all our old tanks who are keept alive by veterans and enthusiasts, where they do live fire a whole day. Thise guys are skilled tankers and I am honored that our old panzers are still kept running :)

Brazil dont face hordes of advanced enemy MBT's so it kinda makes good sense to use them :) They are light and fast perfect for your terrain

Lap loading is dangerous! Also, the Leopard 1 isn't supposed to spearhead an attack in any case. It was designed to ambush, and was exceedingly good at it. This is honestly my second favourite tank after my Leo 2a4 of course! Would love to see a Steel Beasts video on the Leopard 1A3 or something :)

@@Starfey Leo 1 was designed for speed. the armor was light. they focused on mobility. it was not intended for ambushes, although any armored vehicle can also carry out ambush missions, for ambushes you need a safe tank, heavy armor, capable cannon

The way that breech slams shut, looks like a good way to lose a hand.

That's why you used a closed fist to push the round in and not an open palm, the breech will just push your hand out of the way

We had the Leopard 1 in the Italian Army years ago, the 1A2 and the 1A5 to be exact. We purchased them in the early 1970s and used them as MBTs (alongside with the US-made M60 Patton tanks), until we built our own tank, the Ariete C1, so we phased them out (the last remaining one, a Leopard 1A5, was phased out in 2008). By the way I see that many countries in the world are still using them, especially Brazil and Turkey (this one in the war against the Kurds), so it means it’s still an effective tank despite its age.

Not bad. At 6:00 though the Loader makes a safety breach. He "makes" the Loader's Safety Switch (completing the electrical firing circuit and allowing the Gunner to fire) but then puts his arm behind the gun's breech. Lucky he didn't get it smashed to a pulp. Always good to see my old ride putting steel on target though. :)

I was looking at one earlier in a reserve in Seymour Australia. They obviously have a safe loading routine but I can't see how he doesn't lose a finger in that breach. Great vid follow up for me on this tank - thanks.

The Leopard 1 is my favourite tank. It isn't the strongest, fastest or even the best. Iti s just cool and could still be used well for what it was designed for all those years ago. As long as the 1A5 can resist 30-40mm rounds and isn't expected to go toe-to-toe with 120mm armed tanks, though in a scenario where it can get in close and ambush bigger tanks, it will win. In numbers, it could help Ukraine.

1st round hit probability with modern FCS and thermal imaging upgrades keep the Leo 1 a viable MBT...it's weak armor is a non issue if you get the first shot in. Also, it's lighter weight makes it more friendly to use in countries with poor infrastructure...alot less likely to fall through a street into the sewers in a 40 ton Leo 1 than with a 55-65 ton Leo 2, M1a2, or Challenger 2.

I remember seeing a video of Canadians soldier in Afghanistan saying that they shot 14-16 rounds in 1 minutes. That's pretty impressive ! I bet those could still take out modern tanks given the right occasion. I bet their 105m shell curve more so it could it the roof of those modern tanks ( hull roof or turret roof ) but using them as tank destroyer waiting for an ambush, they sure will do the job. Those Leo 1 crews seem to be badasses too, the Canadian won against the American M1 a in a competition with their upgraded leo 1, the Americans said those Leo 1 had better sight than their new tank.

That's too dangerous. If the gunner fires a round while the loader is handling the empty cases, the gun breech will hit the loader's arms.

you see comrade this is why I prefer an automatic loading system, you waste a lot less time and energy and it frees up a 4th crew member. not only that but it gives you more free time to do other things like drink vodka or peel potato :)

Easier maintenance and duties may be true but that would be like the M3 Lee having 6-7 guys as better. Autoloader means less crew and training cost, smaller tank, less weight, armor can be concentrated on a smaller area, no loader's fatigue, can load larger rounds and less causalities when a vehicle goes down. Ammunition storage can be equally as safe as a human loader. The Type 90 have an autoloader but also blow-out panels.

A few years ago this babe actually won a firing contest between the U.S. and the Canadian and the U.S. used the M1. Quite embarrassing for uncle Sam though. Btw, this thing was not design to be a tank but a TD. Similar to the TD concept of the American in WWII with the M10 or M36. It does not need to play the tank's role and it does not need to be since Germany isn't going to invade another country anytime soon.
