I love how Dr. Beccera models using a translation you understand. Understanding the Bible in Spanish was so difficult when it was my first language, on top of it being old, formal Spanish. With the church growing to include so many languages, modeling the use of study aids that help our understanding is amazing. Thank you! P.S. I find myself searching for the pause button during Sunday School sometimes because I get so used to pausing or rewinding these podcasts 🤣

I like to think of parables in the terms I like from the movie "Shrek" when Shrek tells the donkey 'Ogers are like onions, they have many layers'. When Christ speaks a parable, we can often peel back one layer revealing yet another layer or application that enlightens our understanding.

Great lesson. I sometimes struggle with Comparison as some family members have all their kids active and I have none of mine. I don’t know if they realise how painful that is. Keep telling myself - Comparison is the thief of joy. Thanks

Today i saw a video of sweet kids communicating lovingly to each other. I wish my kids talk like that, i thought to myself. While that is a good goal to have, i shouldnt forget the moments theve been loving to each other, when they have shown concern for one another, and the good things i did as a mom. I think we all struggle but in different ways. Don't be too hard on yourself, we will all get through this ❤

I don’t think the different types of grounds represent different PEOPLE but myself! like for instance the seed (word of truth) about let’s say modern day prophets falls on my fertile ground I’m completely ready to hear and apply that but let’s say the seed of the word of wisdom falls more to my thorny ground. I don’t think the parable is meant to apply to “those” people but to me. Just food for thought!

A marvelous lesson. I think I’ll simply have to take a class from Dr, Becerra. That could need hard because I’m 72 and live in Lancaster PA. I love his insights and the way he involves the two of you in the discussion. I’m looking forward to this study next week.

I have started to relate the parable of the wheat and tares to myself and a refinement process. Where the tares are the stories/parts of me I tell myself about who I am and some just don't serve me anymore. They need to be let go of as i continue to get to that valuable kernel of true and authentic me. Is that a gross twist of the real meaning of this parable? Enemy - Satan plants weeds, Kingdom of Heaven in ourselves. I think its from my IFS and multiplicity of mind theories in my learning background that I think of it in this way.

I think that can be useful, since true principles are always according to patterns and anything true will surely have the same pattern somewhere else in creation, so even as Jesus specifically told everyone what He meant by giving the parable, the same pattern applies other places, which is why God arranged His plan that way too on a big scale.

Hi Kim. I would look to Jesus’ explanation in Matthew 13:36-43 for what that parable means. I think it is crystal clear. Although I must say I find it odd that D&C 86:1-3 has a completely different explanation from what Jesus actually said in Matthew 13 regarding that parable.

Shallow roots can be caused by having it too easy. You'll see this exemplified in droughts. The guy who waters his lawn every day will have his lawn die in the drought faster than the guy who waters only a few times a week. Before the drought, the man who watered daily looked like he had a healthier lawn, perhaps, but the grass saw no need to put in the energy to grow deeper roots when water was abundant, but when it dried up, and moisture could only be found inches deeper, it was too late to grow roots at that point (10 virgins parallel?). His yard may have looked healthier because it was better cared for, but the other man's yard was more resilient due to constant struggle against adversity. We aren't grass, so we shouldn't need a lack of water to make us grow deep roots. We can, and must, choose to put in the continual, sustained, and even laborious work today while in abundance to grow deep roots even though it may seem needless. Also, we all have trials, and it's easy to think, "Yes, but surely my trials have made me resilient enough." No, the idea is always dig deeper. While the 4 days a week yard will outlive the daily in a drought. The 2 days a week yard will outlast them all. As long as your trials are not yet as Job's, you should probably dig a bit deeper still.

Jesus sacrifices for us. Searches for us. Gives all that he has for us. He is the man. We are the pearl. Telling us to be missionaries-to share the gospel, to seek out the other pearls around us as we gather Israel.

In Dennis Pragers book, Happiness is a serious problem, he says the one thing poor people have that rich people will never have or be able to buy is, the delusion that money will make them happy. The true test of life comes to us all regardless of the amount of money we have. Brigham Young said the Earth was cursed for mans sake and the more of the earth we have, the more of the curse we have as well. Foot note on Pragers book. He spent 10 years studying happiness and couldn't come up with what makes you happy, only what we do that doesn't make you happy. He whistled right on past the Beatitudes. Makarios= blessed, happy, fortunate. Could it be his Jewish culture that caused him to not even consider them?

I'm growing chickens. The only way to tell the boys from the girls is time. If I try to separate them out too soon, I may end up keeping a rooster instead of a hen- no eggs. I have to be patient and let them grow up together.

These parables in Matthew 13 are all related to the kingdom of God. God is mediating His rule on earth through His church. The parable of the Tares and Wheat shows how not everyone believes that not all bear the fruit of the gospel. God says in Matt 11:42, "And will cast them (the tares) into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gashing of the teeth." But the righteousness will shine forth. Are you planted into the world for good and for God and for salvation? God called out all Christians out of darkness into the kingdom of heaven. Jesus will light the faces of all believers for all ages. Daniel 12:3 says, they will shine like stars. They will shine as brightness of Gods glorious, marvelous heaven. The Pearl of Great Price. The treasure is not obvious to men, the preciousness of the kingdom of heaven. "I found the greatest pearl, eternal life so fair it was through the Saviors sacrifice that I found the rare pearl". Jesus says," Search the scriptures for they are which speaks of Me". The great pearl!!

I want you to look at Jesus’ explanation in Matthew 13:36-43 (and its relationship to all other kingdom parables) vs what is found in D&C 86:1-3.

I didn't catch the title of the book of eight translations John referred to before the "whippersnappers" interrupted him. Is anyone familiar with it? Might it be The Contemporary Parallel New Testament?

Matthew says, "Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof." But 3rd Nephi says,"Sufficient is the day unto the evil thereof." Basically the opposite meaning. I believe Jesus was saying that the day is sufficient. We have enough time, help, and resources to deal with the evil we encounter each day. I've wondered if it's a mistranslation in the New Testament or a plain and previous truth that was corrupted by evil men.

You asked if there was significance to the numbers 30, 60 and 100. 30+60+100=190. Add the 1+9 and you get 10 which is God. The work we do is His work and added together points to Him.

On the amounts you can also look at it liken the 30, 60 and 90 to the telestial terrestrial amd celestial- As soil -We can’t remove the rocks and weeds- but Christ can! I think the parable is telling us to turn to Him… always right?
