Didn't know i needed to listen to this. There's something special about someone talking about their healthy relationship with God, while Matt is agreeable and explains it in a Materialist way. Much love. 💕

Honestly her thread about “I will never do bad things again, only good” or some such read to me as overly hubristic recent convert talk, but idk 🙃

i remember following the host of this on Twitter years ago, she was pretty interesting, probably the only one of these vaguely trad types that took Catholicism seriously as more than an aesthetic trend I think she had a bunch of intense neurological health problems which might be why she went offline

52:55 yes! Look! The way I talk about this is that there's no God... Yet! But also! The way to fulfill the self is to find THE TRUE SELF! THAT'S HOW YOU FIND TRUE DISCIPLINE! IT'S HOW YOU RECOGNIZE PLANET EARTH AS PANDORA! MATT KNOWS A THING OR TWO ABOUT THAT!
@joeyrufo17 күн бұрын
43:10 I kinda hate this talking about the metaphysical like it requires the supernatural! EVERYONE **CAN** EXPERIENCE IT! THAT'S BECAUSE IT **IS** NATURAL! **NOT** SUPERNATURAL! THE STATISTICAL MIRACLE IS STILL ONLY STATISTICAL! AND YET IT'S "ONLY" A "MIRACLE"! "GOD" IS NOT THE ONLY FKNG WAY TO TALK ABOUT THIS STUFF! IT'S IN **ALL** MYTHOLOGY! CHRISTIANS AREN'T FKNG SPECIAL!

Religion or faith is fine. Dogmatism is laughable. The person Matt is talking to is insane.

What I expected: Alan Watts esque discussion of existence and our connection to each other and the universe. What I got: Catholic guilt/sin theological bs Very disappointing really. We'll sell you the problem, and we'll sell you the solution. The good news is the solution is 'free', all it will cost you is everything

Since when does Matt believe in God???! This is so concerning...
@space99728 күн бұрын
Idk I really think the left needs to reckon with their atheism. Not in favor of institutions like religion under a theism but spiritual communities doing meaning making, thinking value, and this sort of material grounding of love (or care). Anyway are you really concerned if Matt believes in some sort of god, or faith? I really think that’s weird man
@mattymc107228 күн бұрын
@@space997 Fundamentally, religion is a coping mechanism to deal with the unexplainable and random. It modifies itself according to the need. It's a story we decide to tell ourselves rather than come to grips with reality.
@DylanTheVillyn27 күн бұрын
@@space997Does the left need to reckon with its atheism or do people in general need to reckon with their theism? Its interesting your suggestion is that people suspend rational thought on a situational basis. Material conditions cannot be changed by spiritual thought or prayer to a power, the good things you point to spiritual communities do are done equally by non spiritual ones. Spirituality is a distraction and tangent from actually confronting real conditions. It is an extra step that allows people to put a wall of religion between themselves and the world they live in, at its best it encourages acceptance of the status quo, at it's worse there are too many examples to name. God won't save us, even if there was one, so the question of god or spirituality is pure ego and emotional masterbation

@space99727 күн бұрын
@@DylanTheVillyn Emotional masturbation? That’s unnecessarily condescending when my point is the left doesn’t replace conservative theism with anything that fulfills the people’s psychic needs. I said nothing about a god other than finding it weird that someone would find the idea Matt might be believe in one concerning. Anyway you’re exactly what I find to be a problem on the left. It’s all material except part of our lives with human brains IS emotional when spirituality has fulfilled that function for all of human history. I’m not saying choose a god, not that I’d care if you did, only that the left’s atheism repudiates any possibility of spirituality, whether one chooses to ground it in a theism, some kind of mysticism or animism, or a sense of science or rationality. You’re just throwing away a whole aspect of the human condition from some place of capital-r reason.

(prefacing this ramble by sincerely begging The Higher Power™️ that our big brain son recovers and joins the world as soon as humanly possible 🖤❤️🩹) i’d be curious to see what sort of conversation christman would hold with an anti-theist (maybe with this person as part of a panel) on some of the themes he addressed with the girls chat host around halfway through. it’d be cool to see both the metaphysical & structural aspects of religion approached by these two folks, plus an annoying but also accurate critic of christian hegemony. hate to name drop & have it come across as a damn-with-faint-praise, but if he could hold back some of his yappy tendencies, someone like actualjake would probably be the best example of such i personally have been exposed to.
