Huntsman spiders are incredibly common in most parts of Australia. They look a lot like Tarantulas, but have little to no poison, and rarely bite. If you want to find one check behind your picture frames. They tend to lurk there, then come out at night to hunt down other spiders and insects in the home. While growing up in Australia every six months we'd do the Huntsman check by lifting all the picture frames in the house, and more likely than not we'd find one. As a personal story, in Australia kids are taught to check their shoes for spiders and snakes in kindergarten. You bang the heel hard on the ground a few times, and then the opening of the shoe afterward. Which in theory should dislodge anything inside it. Then reach your hand in the opening and feel around, just to confirm there's nothing inside. Little six year old me did the whole thing on my gumboots like a champ. Banged the shoe, and then reached inside to check like we'd been taught. Inside was something that felt like a piece of cloth. So of course I grabbed it, and pulled it out. It turned out to be a Huntsman spider, bigger than my hand. And I was squishing it. I can never recall the next hour or so after that. Apparently I screamed, and Mom found me staring blankly at nothing on the back porch. It didn't bite me, but did leave me with an enduring fear of spiders.

Although sometimes you can feel em staring at you. They don’t really move much with the lights on. And when you’ve had a baby (maybe 2inches wide) to their teen years...ya get kinda attached. I have gone to sleep with one just above my bed head and it ended up on the other side of the room when I woke up... not sure if it took the ceiling to get there or crawled over me. I’ve accidentally stood on one under my little toe, causing it to lose a leg. I took it out and re-homed it in my garden. I had a couple visit me on the first day of a new job, one was crawling into my handbag and the over came up and over my computer monitor (only it turns out they were Wolf Spiders and are venomous). My worst experience though, far and away, was bringing the towels in off the clothes line, taking one straight into the bathroom, showered, wrapped the towel around me and felt something move against my stomach, only to unwrap myself and find a huntsman clinging to my bare midriff. Only time I have lost my cool with a spider.

To be fair, there are some really expensive Airbnb’s out there. I’d also imagine they’d be expensive around Byron Bay.

Huntsman do seem to like bedrooms for some reason. They like to appear on the ceiling over the bed just before you turn off the light to roll over to sleep.

We have tarantulas where I live. They get very big. I've wary of them, but not really afraid of them. A full grown Huntsman, on the other hand... A tarantula's not a patch on a Huntsman. I would have screamed until my vocal chords exploded!
