I´ve seen a CJ interview where he explains that lowering his bass down to his knees helped him with the down-picking because he would have his arm straight and relaxed so he would use only his pulse muscles to do the whole work...! When you´re sitting with the bass on your lap it gets way harder to practice...

Mr. Freeman, WOW! Bass and drums is all I’ve heard growing up. Rancid and Brett Reed and yourself helped usher my sound in from Tommy Lee and Jason Newsted to a whole new sound that I haven’t left since 92-93 with some bootleg 7 inches from Vinyl Solution in HB. Thank you for that transition sir, also helped me get through some downer times in the Navy. Have a great rest of the tour and look forward to more Bass Bunker. From a US Navy veteran.

You're so right about downstrokes. I used to only use alternate picking once I got proficient enough at it thinking it was the way to go for speed, but then I realized downstrokes are an important tool as well. Totally different sound, more consistent attack, but it is a challenge to master especially at higher tempos.

Green Day went to a major label so they got all the big press, radio play, MTV time, interviews, stadium shows WAY earlier, bigger album money and the production that includes, etc. Green Day being a good bit more poppy is easier for the general listener to digest.

I ditched downstrokes after my first year of playing for an alternate picking style. Is there any benefit to playing just downstrokes? It seems like more work for an equal payoff to me.

Some parts of some songs just feel like you should be down picking but always do what's right for the song and feels good. If you are alternating picking, make sure you work on getting ups and downs consistent sounding both unplugged and with an amp.

Downpicking usually gives a consistent, aggressive attack that really suits certain songs (see: the entire Ramones catalog). Not better or worse than alternate picking, just a different technique that has it's own use cases. Try playing Blizkrieg Bop with both techniques and see if you can notice a difference.
