It was amazing to be there to experience it with them as I can see how pumped up they were to get to see Green Day and I could remember being 13 years old laying on my bed in room looking up at my popcorn ceiling with Dookie on repeat. I shed a few tears. Thank you Green Day

I saw them this summer in Washington DC. Their concerts are always amazing. What I love the most is my kids love Green Day as well. In 2021, and this summer (2024), we took our kids to both concerts and we had a blast. I also took them about 10 years ago to see the Broadway play, American Idiot. My kids were raised on Green Day, so yes we raised them right!

My band played with Green Day on their first tour in summer of 1990. This was in Michigan. Tiny little warehouse, the stage was a skate ramp. I knew then that they were going to be bigger, but I had no idea how big they'd actually become. Remember, this was a year before Nirvana (another band I had already known about) broke and most of this kind of stuff was underground and not covered in the mainstream. We also played with Neurosis at the same venue a few weeks after the Green Day show. My girlfriend at that time joined the Air Force a couple of years later, when she was stationed in San Antonio Green Day played a small venue there and she mentioned to Mike Dirnt that she had seem them play in Michigan a couple years prior and he asked, "oh, that skate ramp show in the warehouse?". I often wonder how many of those shows they actually still remember today from that time.

I was backstage on the smaller stage at Woodstock 94' We had just finished interviewing Slash and I heard the Green Day start their set. I recognized the sound, it might have been "When I come around" I asked my producer, "Do you mind if I take a break and listen to this band?" He said "Sure" From that point on I watched one of the wildest things I have ever experienced. I watched Green Day get pelted with mud bombs, while the band, tried to figure out what was going on. There was literally waves of mud and straw hitting the stage and band. In the very end, a security guard tackled Mike and then, as far as I could see, punched him in the jaw. It was unbelievable. Later on I talked to Michael Lang who created Woodstock. He told me, that moment with Green Day was almost the end of Woodstock.

the Green Day song "86" was written about being banned from 924 Gilman Street... To this day it's one of their heaviest hitting, most visceral, and best punk songs they've ever written. Insomniac was a cool album, it had an edgy vibe to it that was different than their entire catalog.. I remember looking at the CD artwork for months as a kid. It was so cool to close my door and listen to that album in my room, plug in and play my first Squire electric trying to get Billie's tone on this small 10" speaker practice amp with its own overdrive channel lol. I miss those days...
@damon-gn5xy3 ай бұрын
did they get banned for being mainstream or for breaking something?
@michaelkozma59293 ай бұрын
@@damon-gn5xy Gilman only booked bands who were DIY independent. Anybody that signed Major contracts or went mainstream were not booked. Only local bands and touring independent acts. It was considered frowned upon in the punk community. As a 20 year musician myself I always thought that ideology to be archaic and useless. The entire reason somebody gets into music in the first place is for lots of people to hear your music. Anybody would want to be successful and have many people to hear your music worldwide, it's common sense.. The reason human beings get into music first is just happiness. The next is to feel apart of a community. You don't always need to be apart of something, most of the time we are just listening to music alone.. Fans get too caught up in the byproduct of music at times.

I think a lot of people think that just because someone gets famous for doing one type of music, especially if it's something like punk rock, that it's the only genre that musician is allowed to like or to be good at. Like - that's your lane. Stay in it. One thing I like about Green Day is how they kind of defy that idea. I was so happily surprised back when Billie Joe did the Everly Brothers songs, that he did. I always thought from the beginning that he sounded like them and I was curious how he'd sound if he sang some of their songs. But never ever imagined in a million years, that he'd actually end up doing it for real. Meatloaf is another good example of the kind of thing I'm talking about. He was known for being this great rock ballad guy. Who would've ever guessed that he was also an opera guy? I get the sense from this particular interview, that Billie Joe just sees himself as a musician first and foremost and the punk rock stuff just happens to be what he fell into. But he could've just as easily been a successful classical or jazz or any other type of musician, if that was the more popular scene around him when he was growing up. I didn't always realize that about Green Day. They looked like the kind of guys who would think they're to cool to do any other type of music.
@kenofken94583 ай бұрын
They have fun with music and do some great creative covers of other bands. And to come out before a stadium full of people expecting their signature sound only to first be treated to Everyly Brothers, or maybe something truly out of nowhere like Frank Sinatra.....there's nothing more punk than a move like that.

@@1thess523conservatives are the party of big government now. Leftism is against big government. Democrats are conservative too, just less so.

For as fun, wild, and entertaining Green Day has been over the decades, they've always had a strong layer of professionalism about their work. It's never really felt like 3 guys goofing off with some songs and they happened to make it - these guys have put serious work into their music. Even if you're not a fan of their music, you have to respect that. But they're my absolute favorite band. I've seen them live 3 times and hope to see them again! They're one of the only concerts worth it these days, at least in my opinion.
