I fell in love with a woman that didn’t love me the same way back, married her, helped her raise her daughter. The fracture we had between us drove me in to alcoholism and a lot of pain. You can listen to this song sober or impaired and it will inspire you to do better, to talk to someone, or just reflect on what you have become. The saddest part of sobering up is your friends think something is wrong or you’re in a bad mood but you’re doing everything you can to put yourself together and make it through another day. I hope less people feel the kind of pain he put in to this song. You can hear the emotion.

For me, this song is about depression and how no matter how many vices you use, drugs, alcohol etc, it only makes it worse. "I don't look like me no more", "I'm just tired". I think the line "I saw you in the water" means him standing on the edge of a bridge debating if to jump or not. When he looked into the water, he didn't see his reflection, he saw her. His reason to carry on.

If you’re curious what he means with “I said I saw you in the water” I have watched interviews to find out, read multiple posts on reddit yahoo discussing that lyric. Didn’t find any concrete answer to Matt’s meaning.. but have two guesses. 1) What do you see in the water? Reflection. He could see herself in him. Or perhaps Matt was seeing his former reflection in her. Externally controlled sobriety through religion and culture. 2) Speaking of religion, I believe Matt was brought up in a Christian family band. So he has experience in dealing with church and holy water. Maybe he saw her in the midst of a baptism? Maybe he saw her being baptized, or maybe he saw her being drowned during a baptism. Either way, this song makes my spirit move like it did before. Hell of a song

how i interpret it is that he saw her drowning (like metaphorically, spiraling/going through a rough time). he was trying to reach out to her but he was too "not himself" and was always too intoxicated for her to accept him.

Hey @Rachel ... I know you wrote this comment a year ago. Just wanted to tell you I'm tired too. I hope you and yours have been able to work through things. It's extremely difficult when both are addicts.... seems one is always more serious about sobriety than the other (I don't think serious is exactly the right word either...bc I do believe both people have every intention to get clean and stay clean. I don't know why it's harder for some. Especially when there's so much to live for. Sometimes I want to shake him and say.... you have a ride or die chick that loves you flaws and all, we have 3 kick ass punk rock kiddos together and he's the biological father of all three...our parents are still here and they love us.... so much to be thankful for. But the addict in me understands depression and understands how hard it can be and how even a seemingly "perfect" family can make it even harder bc of the stresses of sibling rivalry or maybe dad wonders why you're such a fuck up.....attitudes from family members can be so condescending and can unintentionally push you into addiction further. All that to say, addiction sucks dick. It's hard to love yourself and stay sober, let alone loving another addict who maybe hasn't learned to love his or her self again. I'd even say almost impossible, at least rare for it to work. Resentment is a mother fucker. And you can bet if one relapses, the other will be resentful....as well as the one who relapsed will resent the other for staying clean. It's a vicious fucking cycle man. I wish you (and anybody else who's spillin' what I'm steppin' in..) the best of love & luck and all the positive vibes!!

But he has his faults too, (as I sit here with half my face a multitude of colors and bruises). He and I have 4 kids together. Not much family to speak of though. Here’s my take on the meaning to the song or at least a good chunk of the lyrics. Basically I believe the song is about addiction either drugs or alcohol they’re both the same. His spouse or whoever says “your spirit doesn’t move like it did before”. Before meaning when he was sober, because when you are high or drunk if you ever look into a persons eyes it’s as if you are looking right through them. They’re spiritually “bankrupt”. The spirit doesn’t begin to return to you until about your 5th day of sobriety. I know because I struggled with a horrendous drug addiction for years. Many of my partners would tell me, when I was high, or sober for only two or three days that there was no life inside me and that I was see through. He says “I’m just tired” which is a lie, but also partly the truth, maybe a cry for help. She’s says “you’re just high” because to everybody else they can see how fucked up you are except for you. Also kind of a giveaway into the meaning of the song. She says “I saw you in the water” which could potentially be a metaphor for drowning. When I say drowning I mean drowning in selfishness, fear, chaos and unmanageability on the inside as well as the outside ex: fear, self pity, lying, manipulating, financial troubles, hungry, homeless etc. Which the lyric “you’re looking like a bad man, smooth criminal” kind of parallels/goes hand in hand with. Sorry for the long rant but I relate to this song, having had my own struggles but also recognizing the impact it had on my past relationships.

Matt Meason is the reason I started playing guitar, I heard this because I accidentally left my spotify on and this song was auto playing and i was taken back by it. This was the first song that really touched me personally, my parents were going through a rough divorce and this song helped me and Matt is the reason I play guitar (and writing my own songs) and am pursuing a life of music which has changed my life tremendously for the better since I started expressing myself through guitar and singing. I encourage everyone to learn guitar or even piano to express yourself. Seriously, guitar is my life and gives me a reason to live. Anyways thank you Matt for opening the door to music for me.
