matt on what this song is about: "I had this sad, almost funny conversation with my mum a while back about breaking up with an ex-girlfriend, I'd known it had really affected her, and in her mind it was almost like a member of the family was just disappearing overnight. I realised more than ever the similarity between my own experience of heartache and hers. Just like you, they lose someone without choosing to lose someone, and they have even less agency than you do in the process." "I remember comforting her at the end of the conversation with a line I'd been told myself years before about the same relationship - “you'll learn to love again," I said - and both of us kind of laughed. You always feel like you're the main one hurting in a break-up, but relationships can form these webs that intertwine the people around you into them, and that's a lot of change and grief for everyone. And a lot of sad, almost funny conversations."

A dear family friend of mine recently went through a very sad and very emotional break-up, and it's left her in a bit of a state. She is still suffering, and we are all sad for her and hurting with her, as she was the driving force of positivity in a lot of our lives. Seeing her that way and knowing she's hurting is hurting us all in equal turn, and I feel this story really sums up those feelings rather well. The intertwining webs of grief really make us all feel caught up in a seemingly isolated event, which unexpectedly echoes through others and others like ripples on water. I sent her this song yesterday and, like Matt, told her that she will learn to love again.

Just my interpretation from the lyrics. But I don’t think this is about anything bad happening to his mom. My takeaway is that it’s a song about a relationship ending where the girlfriend was close with his mother, the daughter she never had. It’s about the loss that is experienced when relationships end, not just between the people directly involved but their friends and family as well.

I don’t wanna make a big scene I just need a moment lying on this street If your lungs stop you die If you lose love that’s life What a blue sky All my friends they miss you alot I know your father probably hates my guts When a lover cuts ties Other people get caught In the crossfire And yesterday I told my mother You'll learn to love again I know she was the daughter You never had and I know sometimes you might miss her But I know the years can heal and if there is another Maybe you'll love them in the same way you loved her Tuesday with your wet hair in curls Wearing pajamas in the outside world Couldn't look in your eyes Then you got in your car and started to drive And yesterday I told my mother You'll learn to love again I know she was the daughter You never had and I know sometimes you might miss her But I know the years can heal and if there is another Maybe you'll love them in the same way you loved her And tomorrow I say mother You'll learn to love again I know you want to write her You'd never thought you'd grow a blood bond to another You didn't birth but that's the joy of human nature Some people stumble into your heart for all time

this song is truly so lovely and appealing to me, though i could not relate to it when it first came out. just yesterday, my brother broke up with his girlfriend of 3 years, and i was in the car with my mother when she found out. when she called my brother, they were both crying. the girlfriend was like a second daughter to our mom, and my entire family loved her. this song was released at the perfect time, thank you matt for sharing this intimate moment in such a beautiful form. the way you write makes listeners feel like they are watching a movie, you are such an amazing writer and artist altogether.

Hey, I don’t know if you’ll ever read this, but I know you love Matt too so maybe there’s a chance you’ll stumble upon this little comment. I’m crying tonight, as i have been thinking about your mothers and how the love they gave me in these short three years has really changed me. How grateful I am for that little glimpse of family. It’s hard to say goodbye, and now I am alone again, motherless again. I know cutting ties with you means elongating the ties with them because I can’t be selfish to keep them around as you deserve your space to heal too. I want to write them, and I do sometimes. I send the first and last sentences sometimes, but most of the times I just keep it for myself. But it helps me a lot. There are a lot of other motherless kids in the world, and I am lucky as I know how rare it is to ever form that kind of relationship without a blood bound. That’s why ending it felt like hell. But it’s okay. I will be okay and I will move on my the heartbreak of you, and of losing them too. You take care of your mothers, okay? And while you’re still here, tell them I am always eternally grateful of the encounter, tell them I love them. And I love you too. Take care V. Godspeed.
