How has worship impacted your life and kept you close to Jesus?

I get lost in worship to my Father, in tears of gratitude, pure love, and joy for all He has done for me, and I know He always will. He's just so good, so kind, so faithful my Father is.❤

Worship has been my lifeline connected to Jesus since I was a little girl. Those songs and hymns come back to me. Jesus Loves Me This I Know is sometimes all I can remember when life is thrashing me about. Oftentimes songs that are scripture based resonate deeply. Worship is just everything keeping me tethered to Jesus. Started playing piano and singing for Him in the sixth grade...still worshiping HIM as age 60 is not far around the bend. I love Jesus with all my heart and these songs give my heart expression🙌♥

Rita, thank you for bringing this meaty session with a wonderfull speaker. It's so inspiring how you and Matt Redman talk about the worship songs in honest way possible. It is so eye-opening. I hope that I can share and discuss these with my fellow worship leaders, singers and worship pastors, and worship team in general, back then. Love what you're doing, and please keep doing this. I can not wait you bring another great speaker to sharpen our worship. All glory belongs to Jesus. Watched from Indonesia, FYI. ❤

I’m so glad there’s more conversation happening around the content of our worship music. I’m so so tired of singing about myself while trying to worship the Lord.

I can so relate to what Matt says about worship saving him as a teenager and keeping him afloat as I had the same kind of experience in my 30s when my marriage went thru seven years of extreme trouble and unhappiness. I went searching for worship groups in a new location we had moved to and without that I would not have made it.

I think people need to have better discernment on what is a worship song and what is someone just writing their feelings. Some people think every song that is Christian is a worship song and its simply not true. Because Christian Music is now an industry, songwriters are pushed to publish songs to fulfill record deals so a lot of fillers are being put out there. I'm excited to see Matt and the other OG's become the "fathers" and disciple young songwriters.

Our language is so watered down, so simplified that deep thoughts are not provoked - now apply that to worship. Our language in songs (and even messages) is like a rapid melt candy - sweet but gone within minutes. We need steak - something to chew on, something that might even choke us and bring us to our knees, something that makes us aware we are the temple of God. Thus, we are in the presence of The Holy God and He is worthy of praise. I'm thankful for the two of you and your faithfulness to our Lord Jesus Christ. Until that Day, God bless you and keep you.

Wow, that’s a beautiful explanation of the concept of God giving songs to leaders, who gave to the worshippers who gave the song back to God. I was so blessed to be one of those worshippers and I miss it very much. His Presence is still strong, maybe stronger but it’s different. And I know I was healed of much in that worship as well. Heaven will be wonderful.

We need songs that minister to the church, but they are not worship songs. They are songs of edification. Worship songs should be just that. Worship to the Deity of God. You are spot on. We have moved away from “worship” and become more “me” centered in our worship. True worship should never be about us.

I think it's interesting that worship songs come in common themes or metaphors. For a while it was fire, or water (oceans), war/battle, now its praise. I would love for new ones to focus on holiness.

I totally agree with both the lack of theology in modern worship songs and the lack of focus on who God is. We're in the era of me, me, me, and all feelings all the time. The theology aspect is only as helpful as your theologians are solid. Hillsong got a song about evolution past their Theological committee, no one hardly batted an eyelash, and the church at large happily sang it. It was the first? Only? Evolutionary song, and it was hard to even find a conversation about it online. The first week Life Church sang it, I had my eyes closed most of the song and thought the science part was saying God is in charge of science. Fair enough. The next week, when we sang it again, I opened my eyes and read the lyrics. Man, I was furious. I sat there apologizing to God. We must have sung it on and off for about 10 or 12 weeks. I was in a quandary. Do I stop singing? Do I sit down? Do I walk out? I kept thinking, "Isn't there single person in Craig Groeschel's life that has a problem with this? His wife? His children? His parents? His team?" Months later, he said in a service something like sometimes I like a song and want to sing it, and my wife doesn't so WeSingIt anyway. I hope he was referring to that song. It was the beginning of my distrust of Hillsong and the beginning of the end of my time at LC. What we sing is important.

I haven’t heard that song in church, but I have heard it just through Spotify and other places and I absolutely hate that song. I speak Jesus is another one. I speak. Jesus is not a worship song but it’s treated like one.

Helpful vs holiness God songs may have something to do with people wanting themselves to be apart of the song. Because as humans we want the attention on us in a certain way. And if we write a fully song on God's holiness, we may feel "left out" of the song. Just processing that conversation. So good though!

I really received this gentle correction from Matt as a songwriter to go after the Holiness and the character of God rather than how he is helpful to us and I see that as a big gap in our worship songs as he is trying to again. just humbly suggest.

I think there's a difference in corporate worship and concert worship. I hope that makes sense???? Just because the worship song is in the top 10, doesn't necessarily mean it's for a congregation of 3 to 5 different age groups. Do I sound old? Lol. Worship music/songs were more pure and honest.

The reason why it’s scary to sing the holy for some is because you actually have to go through the practice of sanctification which can be painful and really selfless. It’ll only work if it’s authentic

Respectfully, I don’t believe that learning God’s holiness is “deep” Christianity. Take Peter for example, when he first met Jesus he said, “depart from me, I am a sinful man” Peter didn’t need to learn Gods holiness. However, after he betrayed Jesus and they met again, he ran to Jesus now having experienced his love. I say that to say, I believe our praise and worship should be reminders of Gods love for us. From a congregants perspective, someone who is trying out a church might not understand that God loves them so much that he’ll leave the 99. Imagine having a view of God sitting on the throne ready to punish you for sin instead of seeing him as a loving father. After all, it’s the goodness of God that leads to repentance (Romans 2) Now does holiness need to be preached and sang about, of course. But not every song sung in church needs to be “theologically rich” to be worthy of singing.
