It's going to be interesting to see how switching from a majority female audience that are already fans of you to an unknown demographic of contrarian "If someone dislikes it, that means I like it"- people will work out. The Bill Burr situation currently shows that people that love to call others snowflakes, sensitive and all kinds of things aren't immune to turning their backs on comedians either

@@snerttt My comment was more so about how people of all kinds of demographics can be make up fickle fan bases. But there are certain people who pride themselves on never getting offended and liking extreme / offensive humor and then are immediately offended when a comedian who they thought was on "their" side behaves differently (e.g. Bill Burr obviously standing by his wife). Catering to those kinds of people doesn't guarantee success and it's probably as easy to misstep as it is with a primarily female audience, which is why it's going to be interesting for me to see how deliberately seeking out a different fanbase works out for Rife, not that I'm really invested in his comedy personally.

100% agree with what you said about the mindset of trying to make people laugh, rather than getting attention from being 'cancelled'. Honestly, I don't really give a fuck about Matt Rife's actual joke; it's the fact that he's using such a sensitive issue as a stepping stone for a career boost that bothers me. Whether or not it was intentional, or he's just taking advantage of a convenient situation, it just feels kinda distasteful. Like he's turning around and laughing at his original audience in order to attract the 'edgy, anti-snowflake' crowd.

Kinda weird how he’s trying to appeal to men through DV jokes. Like sure men like dark jokes more but it would be a more specific male audience if it goes straight to the sexist and crappy jokes. Situations like this remind me of the song Mickey Mouse Is Dead by Subhumans. With that said, I expected the joke to be funnier (I watched the clip for context). I feel like shock jock humor is either extreme or it will fail completely. The Dreamworld Accident joke is funny because it's so fucked up that it's unimaginable someone would genuinely joke about it until you hear someone do so. Matt Rife didn't go far enough to justify the joke making it into the set. You can't half-measure dark humor like that, otherwise it's just being rude for the sake of it, just like any random person online. If you're going the shock jock route, you should make it worth listening to in the first place. His opener DV joke itself is incredibly boring because it doesn't actually go anywhere. It's just "here is a bad view expressed by bad people IRL, watch me say it too". I didn't see the special though. I forgot Matt Rife existed until you made this video.

I think timing really is everything. Comedy is like sex, if there’s no foreplay and no one is warmed up, that shit’s gonna sting. Going in early with a dv joke can be a bit dicey at the best of times, let alone when out was as poor of a “joke” as Matt’s was. It also might not have gotten as much backlash if it had at least been funny. But he basically just went “dv lol get back in the kitchen” which is a joke that a 12y/o redditor would make. It’s lazy writing and not the kind of high calibre joke you expect in a Netflix special.
@zozihn8047
@zozihn8047 Жыл бұрын
Yep, I've seen defenders of him in this comment section say people are soft and don't know how to appreciate jokes anymore. It's not bad because it's offensive, it's bad because causing offense is the only dimension it has. When you see dark humor for the first time it is shocking and novel. Matt's joke was neither novel nor iterative. It was simply verbatim recitation of a realistic conversation a misogynist would have. It isn't inherently funny, so it must be either situationally funny, have good pacing, or be incredibly shocking. Jimmy Carr has mastered this, Matt Rife has not. If he had, he either would have delivered it better, iterated on the concept, or thrown it out.

Well that's a different complaint no? What majority say is they are disappointed by the subject matter. That's different than "the joke just didn't land and I know you can make better jokes." That's like a different can of worms. Basically another ball park. I think you are correct in the criticism but incorrect about why people are upset. Lewis nails it by saying people just thought his jokes were different.

Benign violation theory is the most popular theory of why we find things funny, basically saying you violate a social norm but not in a way that makes people feel unsafe. Basically it boils down to being funnier than you are offensive and the best jokes walk that line for the largest group of people

I think a big problem with the unfunny edgy comedian is that it almost leans into conservative comedy where the joke is just a statement you sincerely believe in masked as a joke. I think it also is somewhat connected to the trolling sjw and angry feminist content that transformed from arguably funny videos of complete freakouts to serious harassment campaigns as in gamergate for instance.

What Lewis said about how it sucks to think about demographics and sales before you create is true. Local bands do that a lot and then wonder why they can't get more non local shows or stopped getting likes. I played with a band that had two of the members not approve because "what he is playing is not in the scene." They purposely hindered their creativity to make sure they sounded like everyone else. I was shocked that a band would do that but it happens.

I think the main reason people (lets be honest, mainly women) do the whole "I knew there was a reason I didn't like him!" thing is because they don't want to be seen as guilty by association. By claiming they were never a fan, they can't be blamed for their rise to popularity. It's not they really did always hate him, it's that they want people to think they were smart enough to see through the veil. Same thing when someone breaks up with their significant other, and suddenly the friends all say the SO was always trash, etc.

Honestly, I think the biggest problem with Matt Rife's special was that it just wasn't funny. The punchline for domestic violence joke was obvious, hence that didn't land proper either. The pacing was weird as well. The last third of the special, if I remember, is just him rambling about a situation in the airplane (personally, I think in the situation in the first place he was wrong, but that didn't matter that much), and him arguing about it with people on the internet. After saying he can't be offended, he mentions some woman called him a little bitch, so he called her fat, and he portrays it as a big win. That was not a win, my guy, that was just kinda sad. You deffo took an L if you can't figure out a better insult than 'ur fat lol'. And that was *after* he bragged how he can make people cry with his roasting. The whole thing was horribly underwhelming. Honestly, if it hadn't been for the domestic violence joke, probably most people wouldn't even be talking much about it because of how bland it was.

I think if a comedian is going for dark humour, they need to commit. That dv joke was a bit lame tbh and I suspect that if people aren't distracted by the humour they're way more likely to get offended. That's just a theory though, I could be completely wrong. It does seem a little dumb to tell that kind of joke if your audience is mostly women, someone's bound to get upset. Unless he was looking to stir up some controversy to bring more attention to his comedy.
@zozihn8047
@zozihn8047 Жыл бұрын
If we take Lewis's Dreamworld joke as an armchair case study, there was a storyline and personal anecdote included of something he did. The dark humor provided context and a backdrop for the story itself of him pissing off people on Twitter. In the case of the DV joke, there's nothing else to the joke. No complexity, nothing to be distracted by or subvert expectations. It relies on the audience either being shocked by the subject itself, which is unlikely post #MeToo, or for them to find the subject matter itself to be funny in some way. I think on a rather primal level people get upset when they feel their time has been wasted, the same as paying to see a film and the humor is dated pop-culture references or pandering. You may feel personally insulted by the experience itself. Dark humor runs the risk of causing harm, and to ignore that is what Matt Rife did. His response to criticism was clever, but in some ways I think it missed why people may have disliked it. On the one hand, you generally shouldn't apologize to the internet. On the other hand, it is not a great sign if a comedian cannot accept constructive criticism. As to whether or not most of the criticism was constructive, I have no idea.

@@zozihn8047 I think the wasted time thing is spot on. No one was offended by the "dark humor" because women have heard so many variations of that same joke that it's not shocking or offensive. It's boring. That joke has existed for 30 years, get some new material you hack.

He’s been a comedian for like over a decade so it’s crazy to me that people are just hearing of him. He used to be pretty funny but most of his crowd work now is pointing out two people of the opposite sex, asking if they’re dating and if they aren’t then saying something weird like “if it were up to him you would be”

I think his first joke would have been better received had he shown a tinge of empathy towards this poor woman. Both he and his friend seemed to care more about the image of the company than her wellbeing. She was presented as an object to be laughed at, something to be hidden not seen. He would show her no compassion or empathy. It's the sort of thinking you'd expect from a self-absorbed 6th grader. IMO, mentioning domestic abuse doesn't make a joke inherently offensive. What made this joke offensive was the manner by which he diminished the value of this victim on stage. Here, Matt becomes her second abuser. She didn't ask to be bruised nor for this public shaming. I think it's kinda gross that jokes about domestic abuse and differently abled are being labeled as something that appeal to 'men'. But I think many of these men are really just boys who haven't grown up. Being a comic doesn't mean you're free from being labeled of a misogynist. His response communicated to the world that he gives zero f's about woman. Whether true of not, that's now the image he's been given. And he displays it proudly.

I feel like whenever something like this happens it's only a matter of time before the new audience garnered from the bits that alienated the old one will get offended too. No one is immune to being triggered as much as we don't want to admit it, some are just better at dealing with it I guess.

Well articulated Lew! I think you really explained the idea of how you work to land and follow up a bad joke” well on your insight interview. I think Matt’s joke was just not good. It was hitting beats so fast. I wonder how the writing to filming process went with the special, did he get much time to audience test his material before they filmed the show.

If we are using the “business” analogy, I cannot think of any successful business who at their peak of success that then decided to use the strategy of “let’s intentionally lose majority of our clientele that have made us a multi-million dollar business and rebrand to target a demographic that we openly admit tends to only like us when their girlfriend/wife buy our product FOR them.” Most businesses tend to want to add to profits by appealing to a new audience ON TOP of their current consumers. Either way, he wanted the women who got him that Netflix special out of his audience, so it seems all is going according to plan, good for him.

I know for sure 90% of his tiktok following is young women who like him for his looks; a shallow and face-value interest of his appearance. The second he made a dark joke he stopped aligning with that cute, boy-ish, innocent young man identity prescribed to him and these "fans" cannibalized him.

I have never seen any of his material before the Netflix Special. A lot of things you say are definitely true - especially about him seeking a different audience. The problem is, he is too young for the material he chose. Maybe the jokes would have been funny coming from a Bill Burr or Louis CK, maybe not. But they definitely weren't genuine or funny coming from him. The line delivery was off, his body language was off, he definitely tried to use the things that made him famous on TikTok without realising that they do not fit his "new" audience and so the whole thing fell flat. It felt like he watched early 2000s comedy specials by comedians pushing the boundaries and he tried emulating them, not realising that the boundaries have moved so far away from where they were back then so he had nothing to lean against.

This is a super well thought out and accurate take from Lewis but I still don't like the joke and don't agree with domestic violence against women being used to appeal to a wider (male) audience because it often feels like a betrayal and so many men I've spoken to don't understand how common and widespread this abuse is.

In my opinion, there is a serious deficit of funny women in stand-up, and that's why pretty boys get so popular. The reaction to the edgy joke doesn't really matter at the end of the day, I'm still glad to see more women engaging with comedy.

I went to go watch it after this popped up in my feed and Ngl it’s pretty funny. My sense of humor is also ig considered ”dark” but it was pretty funny. I haven’t seen anything but clips until this but for the most part its usually made me laugh. And his apology is golden 😂 I can get why some people are “offended” but it’s not for everyone so if people don’t like it then don’t watch it. It’s as simple as that. It’s like buying clothing or a car or in this case a ticket to the show or the link to watch it. If you don’t want it or don’t like it don’t get it, don’t click on it, or don’t watch it. Idk that just seems like common sense to me.

I dropped an upcoming joker/coach, at the time, when he imitated the sounds a person with speech impediments makes when they speak. "Edgy" humour has no place in my life. Especially if it's obvious that pretty privilege went to the individual's head. He should take the piss out of himself and his looks, which I don't find attractive at all - but I'd have a degree of respect for someone who's got self reflective skills and qualities.
