Matt's Off-Road Recovery Saved Our Bronco!

We spent our week out at United By Bronco in Sand Hallow, Utah and broke on our first trail! We were being spotted up Menios Choice on the West Rim Trail and next thing you know we broke our tie rod and front differential at the SAME TIME!!! Weren't too sure how to get off the trail without damaging more stuff, so we called Matt's Offroad Recovery and they helped us out.

Saw this first on Matt’s channel. It was cool that Matt pointed out the issue after dropping the Bronco and told you to let him know what you wanted to do. Equally cool that you don’t seem to be blaming him for the damage. Too bad it had to be lifted to be dragged out. Great marketing for your company and products regardless. Nice stuff you guys make.

Perhaps you can engineer some reinforcement plates that can be welded onto the frame to prevent bending. Radiusing the edges that cut Matt's soft shackles might be possible too.

I watched this on Matt’s channel first too and only watched this one to see if they kept the same great attitude they had on the trail. It looks like they discovered that significant hardening should be done to the frame horns if you plan on really getting into the muck with these new Broncos. These guys should design a kit to go along with their bumper to prevent this from happening to other people. Probably some kind of weld on bracket to strengthen the frame horns to allow them to hold the weight of the vehicle when being towed by the bumper. I wouldn’t want to imagine what would have happened on that recovery if Matt didn’t have that wrecker put together. They would have had to skid it out using an old car hood as a sled and still would have been putting a lot of stress on that front bumper’s shackle points. All in all it was a successful rescue and we all learned some things. Good luck DV8 on designing a fix for this newly discovered issue.

I'm going to second Brad here. Never heard of you guys before Matt's video, It was really cool of you to not make a big deal about the damage, it sounds like this is going to make a great learning experience for your products. Those bumper mounts need to be reenforced somehow. Also, you should consider running a filet on the recovery point holes so they don't cut soft shackles. I really like the look of your products and I hope that you guys do really well.

The frame is designed to crumple in a crash and absorb the impact to save you. it is done as per road safety laws. Your are changing the design philosophy when you add off road bumpers etc.

Those mounts are not designed to mount a RECOVERY bumper, they are strictly designed to hold an impact bumper that absorbs impact.

@@alohaexpeditions1847 Yet Ford has their own off-road bumper designed for it ... so which is it? They market the vehicle as a very rugged off-road vehicle. Perhaps the leverage from the recovery point was too far from the plates and Ford's design takes that into account???

I came over from Matt's. I enjoyed your video and I'm impressed by the durability of your bumper. I realized decades ago that what wins points with the insurance companies (for safety reasons) is "crumple" rather than "rigid." The bumper and mounting system that came on my 1977 F250 Highboy could not withstand a bump, despite the truck itself being as tough as granite. That's when I welded a piece of 4x4 square tubing made of 1/4" steel to the frame and did some vigorous reinforcing, winch mount, receiver hitch, all integrated. Never had to worry about bumps on the bumper again. Looks like you're most of the way there with a tough bumper that looks much better than that old square tubing, and I'm sure you'll work out the rest. 🙂

Breaking down and having Matt and team come tow you was probably the best thing that could have happened. I've been looking for an after market steel bumper for my Bronco since the ford modular bumper has been impossible to get and was not aware of your brand until now. The strength of your bumper was impressive, probably worth noting that any bumper would have bent the frame when being towed like that for miles over rough terrain.

I work as a Body Shop Tech you should be able to bend the frame ends back pretty easily. There is a tool Nick named a pogo stick. It’s a bar what is used as a lever and a chain attaches to it and the part you are bending back to place. To prevent it from bending again you guys could probably design something to reinforce the frame end. Great job on a strong bumper design!

Good luck with your company! P.S. the coal mine I worked at orders in brand new Ford Super Duty's and we got stuck and hooked a tow rope to the tow hook and it ripped off the front bumper. Ford is not reinforcing their stuff. Just for looks. :(

Ya it would if u have the right size square tubing to slide in the frame horn. Also depends on how far your able to slide the tube in to the frame rail. If there's any obstructions that you can't move in side the frame rail and your not able to slide at least idk 6" or 8" of thick wall square tubing in to it it won't do much good at all. I'm not an expert or anything this is all just my opinion after building a hand full of rock buggys, jeeps, diesel pickups for sled pulling and dynos & a coupel toe rigs and some fast cars for myself and a few for friends. So I don't claim to know everything but I know a little bit about a couple things

Those stamped frame rail tend to bend from the vehicles weight when towed. You can always sleeve it, and that can cure the problem, but it will 🎉 the crinkle zone when in an accident

I have never seen this happen to a Wrangler, and the basic idea behind the bumper mount is similar. Once difference is that on a Wrangler, there are heavy gauge plates that go behind the ears. Those plates would have to bend in order for the ears on the frame to bend. You guys may want to consider adding these to your bumper kit to re-enforce that area.

I'm another one who saw this on Matt's channel and then it showed up in my feed. Great attitude, your parts look great, and what a great way to field test them. In Matt's video you mentioned getting into Toyota parts. I have a 4Runner, I just want to suggest that the 10- 13 5th gen 4Runner (referred to as the OG in the 5th gen community) is kind of neglected when it comes to front bumper options, so that would be great to get into. Even though they're getting older, there is a community of early 5th gen owners that are really into them and prefer them over the later model years.

Matt should use some sort of device like deadman off road to strap under the vehicle to lift straight up. The bumper was not designed for those kinds of loads, and if anything intended to bend for crash compliance. It would also help to keep the vehicle from sliding into the back of his truck. At least need some sort of toe bar for that. Probably better off just making an off road dolly to drag things on like a normal tow truck.

We all know about the IFS vs solid axle debate. I have two rigs, one with IFS, one with Solid axle. So I am not a hater. That said, it seems like the IFS adds a bit of complication and possible things to break. Great video guys!

The bumper horns are designed to be used in a forward & back motion. Either for pulling on level ground or for absorbing a frontal impact. Not for lifting. (or lifting on a bumpy off road) That being said, they faired very will for that unintended use. And the DV8 bumper did very well in holding up it's part of the job (no pun intended) and transferred all the energy into the frame. All in all, if that was the worst that happened, it was a good day on the trail. Thanks for the follow up video.

I love my DV8 recovery front bumper for my F150.. I did have to modify the winch plate for the winch I got. I will also have to cut out the DV8 graphic cutout on the top plate to use the winch hard wire remote

You should slide a piece of sq5tubing 3/16 the and plug weld it inside the frame to strengthen the frame. You want to get the tube steel as deep as possible for the utmost strengthening

Do you think you guys will eventually ever expand your bumpers to accommodate older full size vehicles like the OBS Chevys and Fords? That bumper would look sweet on my OBS Tahoe, but I’m not completely sure the thin frame rails on them could support it through too many self recoveries. The OBS Fords probably definitely could and I’m in the process of getting a guy I know down to a realistic price on his 85 Bullnose Bronco that I’ve been wanting for years.

The kind of data one can gather from this nice video is that : one has to take a LOT more steps preparing a modern day Bronco for the trail as opposed to general older trucks, hearing that tie rods that fail is common isn’t good news , reminds me of the Hummer H2 and how it also broke stock tie rods while on the trail, however when it comes to the chassis, having it bend that way … means I wouldn’t use this platform for off road driving, or I’d have to modify it even more, which is a bummer for a truck so hyped as it was. When the necessary modifications for a vehicle are this much, might as well prepare a Toyota Corolla or a Dodge Viper for off road use, the only thing extra needed is space for the tires, this says a lot about what the Bronco is I’m sorry I have to give my impression of what I saw, but given that this vehicle had been hyped as the new off road king, and seeing it break a tie rod and frag an axle while sporting stock size tires and not being particularly overloaded gives me all I need to know … I’d go 77-78 Bronco, those might bend the chassis still when picked up by the heavy wrecker, but rolling over or getting stuck would be a bigger concern than having to baby it, killing the fun … That said, great work from DV8 😊😊😊, that bumper is however just too good for that car 😂 , Bronco = a case of never meet your hero
