Great interview, Peter -- thank you. Matt is too humble to say it, but he really saved the group. They didn't just need a new bass, they needed a new family member and they needed to heal. Matt is truly a blessing.

Yep! They did talk about perhaps doing it with orchestras or something, but they were all pretty burned out at that point and I don't think they would continue pushing for too long without getting the infusion of Matts excitement and energy.

That's spot-on. When you see them interact at live shows - partucularly Matt and Kevin - you know they are a genuine tight family. Love 'em all!

I have often thought the same thing. Matt seemed to infuse them with love and energy. It takes someone special to be able to successfully merge into an established, well-known group. Hearing the lengthy process they went through to vet Matt you know they didn’t just grab the first person they found. His commitment to making the smooth transition into the group by learning all their songs in advance is so indicative of how much he wanted to succeed. No two singers are alike so no one could ever replace Avi. Finding Matt, with all his experience and his personality, was a godsend for them. Ben’s contacts in the acapella music world really allowed them to find just the right person. PTX is one of my favorite groups so I’m excited they are still going strong after 13 years.

I love him so much! I remember being so worried after Avi left but as soon as Matt came in I was hooked. Such an infectious smile and a joyful spirit. He fitted the spirit of the group immediately and was a breath of fresh air. He did an amazing job and I'm so proud of how far he has come because those were not easy shoes to fill. Hard to believe he has been in the group for 6 years already! Blessings onto you Matty 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

Fantastic interview! Matt has the best energy, he just exudes so much joy. I didn’t realize I was smiling all through this until the end when I realized my smile muscles were feeling it, 😂. I wish I could have seen that call-back audition as a fly on the wall, to see the expressions when the rest of the band were first exposed to that joy he brings and realized what his energy did when it was combined with theirs. There is no mistaking that thrill of happiness when you’re making music together and it becomes something uniquely different than Just the sum of the parts. All 5 of them are monster singers with solo juice, but Pentatonix is a very specific and miraculous thing unto itself.

I like that Matt has been excited about each job he’s had, and that it hasn’t hardened him. Going through the ups and downs in the music industry must be taxing on the mind, let alone the physical wear and tear. This was a great interview. He’s so engaging! I hope you are able to connect in VA.

Thanks! This was an amazing interview! I really love Matt's humility. I am so happy that out of all the amazing bass vocalists Pentatonix could have chosen to replace Avi, who was and is and will always be absolutely phenomenal, they chose Matt. He truly is a gift from God. I hope one day Matt and The Bass Gang will collaborate with each other. It would be truly extraordinary!

I need to find some new adjectives to use, but wow.. amazing. Once again, a guy I would call "famous" within his sphere turns out to be an absolute sweetheart! You'd think guys like that would develop an attitude but nope. Bass singers seem to be a special breed of nice guy. And, as always, Peter, you've made someone comfortable and chatty. Your interviews just get better and better!!

I always love Matts mindset! His talent is great, but honestly, his mindset probably one of the biggest gifts to being able to join the group. I cannot imagine someone could successfully step in to that role unless they were as mentally strong and flexible as him. Plus he's basically impossible to dislike, haha! Excited to see what they do next. Most of the things in the interview I already knew but it was nice to get some more in depth thoughts on much of it! Would love if this led to some kind of collaboration in the future!

Your subtle and informed direction of the flow of the discussion and Matt's joyful temperament and ability to succinctly word his responses melded into something that felt so natural. I love that you threw the "not a bass" part in there. That drives me so crazy with Matt's critics, especially. Like, these same people who claim Matt is a baritone because he doesn't hit exactly the same way Avi did don't even blink at Mitch and Kevin both being totally different tenors. What is that, even? Little confused about the answer to if all of PTX was at his callback. You asked if all five were there and he said "yeah" but then expanded with "the four members and Ben Bram" 🤔 Either way, the whole "Avi hand picked Matt" thing isn't true... it is good to know that Avi did actually kind of pass the torch, though.

Thanks so very, very much for taking your time, asking great questions and giving him free rein to fully answer them…so often I’ve wasted my time listening to interviews that wound up just feeding the creator’s own personal agenda. There, straight out of Matt's mouth. Now can people stop spreading the rumor that Avi picked him for the group. He wasnt even there when matt sang for ptx. When peter asked if he sang for all 5 of them, Matt said yes but then clarified it was the 4 of them, plus Ben Bram. Avi may have later given Matt advice, but he wasn't part of them choosing him. Too many fans keep spreading this rumor to reactors.

If you're looking to add to your future guest list, I recommend Jonathan Estabrooks. He's a baritone and music producer, and former youtuber with three seasons of A Singer's Life. I would also recommend Ruby Rose Fox, a singer-songwriter with a passion for educating on the connection between mental-wellbeing and physical-wellbeing, which in turn affects the voice.
