Rob spent 4 years training in opera, he can just sound like anything he wants; as far as Tim, when he sings this live, the lowest notes he sings just seem to drop out of him with no effort, no strain, no chin tucking, nothing. Absolutely amazing live!

When I hear Austin sing "Fare thee well, my own true loverrrrrr. . ." I hear all the choirmasters I ever had screaming to not close on the "r" too early. I'm glad Austin ignores that advice; I doubt it applies to bluegrass.

The twang is Chance doing what is called a Jew's Harp. This is a very old country song from 1919 and they emphasized the country twang to pay homage to the earlier versions.

Chris Rupp was the other founding member. Baritone. Up until about 2015, then he went on to other projects and they hit it big when they found Chance.

In this song Home Free is making a distinct southern (bluegrass) presentation--it definitely fits the lyrics of the song. Chance doing the jaw harp sound really sets the stage for this song's story, which Austin's twang fits phenomenally. Tim's bass line completely grounds the harmonies and Adam's voice percussion simply cannot be beat. This performance highlights a lot of Home Free's strengths although they also handle ANY other genre just as amazingly❣️🎼🥰🎶❤️

I watched a concert video of this song, and when Tim sang the word grave at the end of the second line when he dropped the bass, he didn't come back up like he did in the studio version. He dropped even lower into subharmonics. The whole place was shaking and everyone was screaming, of course.

Chris & Adam Rupp were founders of group Had auditioned 2xs for 'Sing Off' Interim had lost 2 members of active group bringing in Austin & Tim as replacements. Home Free had been part-time doing gigs in a circuit. Tim had worked with them previously. He didn't want to move to MN. Tim had also worked on cruise ships in past. Home Free decided to go full time & had hired Tim as a replacement. They were booked on a cruise ship & ran into Austin who replaced another member. Auditioned 3rd time with Austin & Tim & accepted. Won that season, also competed with VoicePlay. Met Pentantonix during competition (previous year's winner). They & also in that season did a tour, also how met Adam Chance (was in another group) & later joined them when Chris Rupp left group. Chris has a YT channel. Has videos explaining the beginnings of Home Free & stories of tours. 2 Adams - Rupp co-founder, Chance baritone/bass replacement Adam Chance - guttural if watch near the end, can see Chance doing it. Rob - doing the scatt Tim - base Austin - ooing Adam Rupp - harmonica & perc

This song blew me away when I first heard it & I was completely hooked. These guys are all so talented. They are known for their tight harmonies. Tim Foust is one of the best bass singers out there. Did you notice the bass drop after his solo? Adam Rupp (beatboxer vocal percussionist) can simulate any sound such as drums & harmonica. Chance is making the jaw harp sounds. This song is very old & is done in the bluegrass country style. It was used in the movie "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" starring George Clooney.

This was my first Home Free song too. I had heard Tim Foust a couple of times with Peter Hollens, but this was the first Home Free song, and I was hooked from the start. Singing along with Tim makes it SO much more fun... Anyway, one of the things that drives me crazy with many reactors is the way so many of them are fascinated by Tim's low voice in his solo, and they get to talking about it - right over the part where he drops another octave, and completely miss that part. Sometimes they notice, but often they don't seem to notice at all. (Home Free "megafans" are *Home Fries,* and Adam Rupp is the vocal percussionist - there you go!)

Home Free is so good. Yes, that was Chance doing the mouth harp sound. When Live he will do it on a looper as he says it hurts his voice too much. Also Austin will join in with Adam to do a harmonica Live. This song was made popular in the movie O Brother Where Art Thou but that was a cover too. The song is over 100 years old. In my whole life I have never favored a single band or singer. But for a good year now, I can't get away from these talented guys. Home Free - they are five extraordinary talents. This song is one of the first I heard from the guys and it took me a while to be sure - there is no harmonica :-) LOL I missed your reactions from Home Free and I hope the next one won't be too long!

This was the second song I heard from Home Free (first was Ring of Fire) Home Free is incredible. Everything they do is great. And although they are a Country A-cappela group, they can really sing all genres. They really all have great voices with their own specialties. I think you are right about Rob that he is not trained. Adam Rupp is for me the best vocal percussionist/mouth artist (But Chance makes the Jaw harp sound) The best harmony, no egos, no rivalries, great personalities etc. Besides, they can all beatbox (see their live performance 9to5). For me they are number 1 A-Cappella group I'm a Home Fry from the Netherlands.

This is my favorite song of theirs along with Ring of Fire ft Avi. Comprehensive review thank you. Chance, the baritone, is doing the mouth harp. He came from Streetcorner Symphony where he was the bass singer (they have an actual bass now Armand Hutton). So now Chance can cover bass so Tim isn't stuck as an instrument the whole time. Chris Rupp was their baritone along with his brother Adam Rupp as beatboxer founding members. Austin did study musical theater. Note - you forgot Avi in your list of things to do. To avoid "being beaten with a wet noodle" 😁 please listen to Avi's new album. Some very interesting songs in there all over the place in his full range.

Love this one! I think that easy, could-do-this-all-day sound is a big part of what makes it so enjoyable for me. It sounds so clean and so utterly sure-handed that it's reassuring to listen to, somehow, while also having some swagger, and just being really impressive even without any super vocal pyrotechnics. Like, this is just a rock-solid cover, in the best way. A bit surprised you didn't mention the little yodely sounds at the end of a few of Austin's phrases, just because you mentioned the grit, and usually do comment even on those small things. I aways appreciate the discussion and demonstrations of the different ways of producing sound (Tim's more forward and bright vs Avi being low-larynx and warm), and also the behind-the-scenes production stuff. Well done, and thank you!

Chance is doing the F2s with a jaw harp in his mouth to get that sound. Being a bass-baritone, he has a lot of power around an F2 and gets to get funky with it.

Hearing these breakdowns is soooo helpful! 🙏💕😍 As someone just beginning to learn how to sing, I never understood how much technical knowledge really goes into vocal music! I heard ppl say "your voice is an instrument" but I thought they just meant, it plays music so you need to care for it like an instrument. I never realized it works the same as an instrument, in that as a vocalist you "play" your vocal chords in different ways to make them do different things. As someone who played clarinet in Jr. High, this makes so much more sense to me! I never knew about things like ear training and intervals, I knew written theory and how to READ music but I never learned how to LISTEN to music. Now that I've started ear training, listening to breakdowns like these is very beneficial! As you discuss these elements in the vocals, I begin to notice them and what used to sound like unidentified chaos to me, as a person on the Autism spectrum, now starts to finally make sense. Our ears take in so much and when it all jumbles together in the brain, for some of us, it can be very overwhelming when we can't tune it out (like Dolores in Encanto). Having the knowledge to properly identify what I am hearing, is so great because when I can focus on the sounds separately and how they work together, it's not as overwhelming anymore. It's like the difference between the way waves sound on the beach when you are trying to hear them, versus when they are just background noise. One experience is hectic, the other is soothing! You and all the others in your field, providing these breakdowns, probably don't realize what a great service you are providing! This knowledge is entirely life changing for anyone with sensory issues. Thank you so very much for the content!! Keep up the great work! 🥰😊🥰

I have never agreed with the feeling that "learning too much about something kills the magic"-for me, learning to appreciate many aspects of a complicated subject makes it more amazing! One of the first I heard from Home Free, and I love it! The first few sounds (Adam doing the jaw harp and Rob doing his part) are recorded on a looper. You hear it thru the whole song. Same way they did Edd Sheeran's "Castle on the Hill". Both sound great!

Awesome analysis! This song was my introduction to Home Free back in 2020 thanks to a reaction by QoFyReacts. I appreciate the time you take in breaking it all down. Don't worry about getting names mixed up... it comes right back like riding a bike. I'm a huge fan of the Bass Gang. My favorite so far of the two albums is "Mad World". Elliott Robinson is a legend to me. I hope you get to do more collaborations with him in the future.

I agree, well worth the attention. One of the things that struck me most about Peter's analysis today was his ability to identify and echo riff patterns. The section where he sang/fingered Austin's riffing up a few notes and then riffing back down an octave made me shake my head in wonder. Amazing!

I think that presence that you mentioned with Tim, also helps to make it twangy, which matches their country styling as a group. Your reactions have really helped me listen to all of the different parts of an arrangement. Amazing job man

If you saw O Brother Where Art Thou- then you’ve heard this song. Adam was a trumpet player before he got into beatboxing. That old embochure makes his percussion crisper than most.

Love the commentary as usual! I was first introduced to this song listening to Bob Dylan's first album. It is based off an older folk song. The arrangement made for Brother, Where Art Thou, and this arrangement make me fall in love with the song over and over again!

Chris & his beatboxing brother Adam were the founders of the band. Chris left to pursue other interests and that's when Adam Chance joined. Thanks again for the technical insights (I've always been a 'helpful listener' and couldn't carry a tune in a wheelbarrow . . .). You might want to watch "Mayday (Live)" and "9-5 beatboxing breakdown" - they alll beatbox.
