Any mature adult knows making up excuses only makes you look even worse, even if the excuse was legit. Much better to just take the L and swallow your pride. It's funny how many fighters I couldn't stand because of how the UFC presented them only to find out they're amazing people when I hear them talk. Serra being one of them.

Matt went 8 wins, 7 losses in UFC competition, and when you look at who he fought, that's damn impressive. He fought THE MURDERER'S ROW of the UFC: George St. Pierre TWICE, Matt Hughes, Karo Parisyan, BJ Penn, Chris Lytle, etc. It's amazing he's mentally and physically together at age 49 after confronting THAT level of physical abuse in his career.

I wouldn't be surprised if majority of people who watch JRE and think most UFC viewers today are mainly post Brock (with ofc huge influx from conor). So I doubt most recognize any of those names, besides maybe GSP, Hughes, ans BJ, haha!(I recognize all of them as I started watching MMA right before PRIDE ended, and GSP was my favorite fighter, glad to see GSP reached MMA GOAT status, or minimum #1-3 😁)

I was lucky enough to witness that second fight live. Flew overnight from Vancouver to Montreal, met up with my brother (who had flown in from Saskatchewan), went to the fight that night, and flew home the next morning. Not even 24 hours in Montreal but every minute was memorable. You’re right, the arena was absolutely electric that whole night and when GSP came out, the crowd went bonkers. After the victory it was pure mayhem! I’ll always remember taking the subway back to the hotel after the event and it was packed with fired up fans cheering and chanting at the tops of their lungs. Incredible time. GSP won his title back that night and never officially lost another match again. 👊🏼

I remember Matt Serra saying after he beat GSP that he had already beat one future HOFer (Matt Hughes if I remember right) and he thought GSP was gonna be a HOFer too and he was proud of that. Even in the biggest moment of his life he was honest with himself and what happened while giving his opponent respect. I think he knew he got "lucky" (it's not really luck, but you know what I mean) and was probably gonna lose the rematch. Awesome guy with a great nickname, seems like a humble and genuine person, nothing but respect for this monster, or Terra if you will. Edit: He didn't beat Hughes, not sure what I'm thinking. If you’ve had bad back inflammation you know what he meant about not walking and having a tough comeback. I like how he didn’t try to make it an excuse, and before joe cut him off he almost went to say “but when don’t”….we have injuries as fighters”* he probably accepts that the tables were probably opposite during the first fight.

Matt "The Terror" Serra is 1 of my all time favorites. I watched Serra vs Hughes and both Serra vs GSP matches live on ppv. I love Matt Serra. DAMN I love that guy. My mma education started during the age of Matt Serra, Chuck, Randy, Bj Penn, and many others. I watched Randy come out of retirement and clean house. I saw the up and commers who are now retired legends. I feel old lmao. I watched Frank Mir get revenge against Wes Sims. I watched every event from 1 to 120 ish and a handful after that. (I didn't start watching ppv til the UFC 50's) Now...Im so far out of the loop. Almost everyone I used to watch is retired. My goodness I remember watching Anderson vs Chris Leben on ppv and Wanderlei vs Chuck live. I watched Liddell vs. Franklin in a movie theater. Ok I'm done talking...I'm gonna go look in the mirror and see how many gray hairs I have lol. You'll get old toooo! Lol

I remember thinking Serra had a chance in the 1st GSP fight and everybody said there was no way he'd win. I would've put a couple hundred bucks on him at something like 8-1 odds. Don't get me wrong, I definitely considered him the underdog, just not as much as everyone I talked to. It bugs me when people say that it is IMPOSSIBLE for one fighter to defeat another, as though it wasn't an actual fight where almost anything can happen. GSP was one of my favorite fighters, too, but so was Serra (I do think GSP is the GOAT, still).

I was cageside at this fight shooting photos for a media outlet, and I remember the moment Matt tagged Georges and staggered him. None of us who followed the sport expected Matt to throw hands like that, much less connect like that against the champ. I was stationed on the side of the cage next to Matt’s team and the moment Georges tapped, I clearly remember pulling my camera down and looking at over at Matt’s cornermen who were looking left and right in clear disbelief, locked eyes with me and we all were mouthing “holy $#;+” to each other. It was an amazing moment and likely the greatest underdog winning moment I’ve ever been a part of! Matt is truly a class act, as is Georges, and at that moment I remember being so incredibly happy for him! I have a lot of great memories from shooting UFC events, but the two where I remember being the most happy for the victor are this fight and UFC68, when Randy Couture came back to the UFC and beat down Tim Sylvia for the heavyweight title.

7:10 For anyone curious, epidural is just a layer of the spinal cord which is surrounded by multiple layers. They call it an epidural because thats the layer/space in which they are injecting whichever medication. So an 'epidural' is just a treatment of X medication/treatment/procedure basically.
