Best argument against keeping coffee in the fridge is that it needs to be dry, and every time you take it out of the fridge and open it, water vapour from the air in the kitchen (where you have probably just boiled a kettle) condenses into it.

It depends on where you live. In a tropical area, people will store a lot more things in the fridge. Food spoils faster outside the fridge. High humidity means it’s a good idea to store biscuits and chips in the fridge once the packaging is opened. Medication: always in the fridge, room temperature of more than 30 degrees celsius is more than the recommended temperature on the box or bottle.

Even in tropical areas, chips and biscuits can be stored in air tight containers. That way you can save space in your fridge for important things like tomatoes and veggies.

You got this wrong a bit, close not quite there. The dehydrating effect of refrigeration along with people storing coffee too long in an open system make it flat tasting from oxidation, which is not suppressed by refrigeration. In fact, the one-way valve on most coffee bags can fail to work properly under cold temperatures. But all of this is moot. For fresh coffee in all its glory you must use whole beans. All pre-ground coffee is inferior to fresh ground coffee. After having whole beans, you can store unopened bags in the refridgerator or freezer if you like, but there should be no reason to do this unless you plan to wait a month or more after thier roasting date. It is much better to buy freshly roasted beans, and use with the first 30 days. Always buy in quantities where one bag is less than one week worth of coffee that you consume. That way your opened bag is always fairly fresh, and used before too much oxydation can occur.

I would of thought the ultimate question. Would of been eggs. Where to keep them. Be it in a professional kitchen or at home. After all, supermarkets don't keep in a fridge.
@RichRadd3 жыл бұрын
Best practice is to store them like the supermarket sells them. There are a few ways of processing and cleaning the shells to remove the risk of ecoli from the exterior. Depends on the method used will dictate storage conditions. In Australia, you'll want to store most things in the fridge as the majority of products like cool environments. 40 degrees Celsius for most ingredients isn't fantastic

So you shouldn't keep coffee in the fridge but can the freezer? Not convinced by that one. The cold air from both dry the oils, and subsequently flavours out. Air tight container, in a dry dark place is the way to go... ration out your weekly supply so the bulk of what you store has less air contact.
@carrieullrich50593 жыл бұрын
It doesn't have a high enough water content to freezer burn. I used to get mail order coffee. We kept bags we hadn't started on in the freezer and the current weeks container sealed on the counter, along with partial bags sealed in the freezer... It keeps the humidity level from substantially changing. You won't regret it. Its fine for up to a year in a freezer.
@EweChewBrrr013 жыл бұрын
The next question is how long can it be stored. I have ground coffee that's over a year old that's sitting in my cupboard and I still drink it. I know it's not going to make me sick but I sense that coffee experts would cringe at hearing that.

Would the coffee be OK in the fridge in something other than a paper bag...like glass or metal...or even plastic...all with air tight lids?
@carrieullrich50593 жыл бұрын
The goal is to keep it dry, and keep the aromatics inside. Frozen in a sealed bag works fine. A sealed canister on the counter by the coffee maker is fine for quick use... If your container is left a little bit open in the fridge, humidity makes it taste worse. Freezer is best in most climates because badly sealed in the freezer lets in little humidity... So small container with this weeks grounds on the counter... Larger container in a freezer if one's available... Cool dry place if one isn't... Dry being key.

Now that was a useless video. There are just 3 products discussed and everyone should know that you don't keep tomatoes in the fridge unless you want something red that doesn't taste like tomato. Bread actually will keep a lot longer in the fridge if you double bag it in paper and then in plastic. You have to toast it when taking it out, but a fresh sourdough loaf will be ok for about a month that way. I usually have them out in a paper bag after baking a loaf and then put it in the fridge double bagged after like 5 days or so. The gluten firms up so you really have to toast it at that point. You didn't address more important things than coffee (for which the actually best way is to buy whole and grind on demand), What about eggs? What about any other perishable food like vegetables, potatoes, onions etc? That would have been far more interesting than coffee.

It seems the only things discussed where those he and his wife disagreed on lol. Everything you have said is true but my question is why do people's bread last them so long? If you are buying the right amount of produce, then the amount of time in storage and where to store it becomes less of a problem.
@uweschroeder3 жыл бұрын
@@nathanthom8176 For someone like me buying bread is a problem. Bread comes in loafs and generally don't need more than a few slices a month. So it's either freezing it or trying to store it. I started to bake my own sourdough bread years ago because it's almost impossible to find good bread in the US, at least for a price you want to afford (and a quality you want - or better I want since I grew up where there's at least 200 different types of bread, probably more). There are great bakeries where I live but sorry, $12 for a loaf of bread is like $9 too many. Homemade bread is better and cheaper but comes with the same problem: I don't eat much bread and frozen is ok when toasted but just not fresh. Bread is one of these items you can't really buy in a small portion and thus have to store somehow. In general though I agree with you: if you plan ahead and shop responsibly you shouldn't have a ton of produce sitting around. Exceptions for me are items on sale and bread.
