This guy has been the reason i learned to play consistent and solid. His feel is impeccable but also he hits so consistent. Ive been mimicking him since the use your illusion albums. 10 years old. God bless this legend!

Met Matt at a big party in the 90’s in Toronto, we moved to the music room and talked drums for at least 2 hours. This guys a pro an his passion for the drums evident. I became a fan of him even if I wasn’t a fan of the bands. He is a super nice guy

Watching this reminds me of his play for the Buddy Rich tribute in the 90s. It was epic to see him playing with ahead drumsticks with a brass band which I really loved actually.

I never thought I would hear Mr. Sorum mention Chris Layton (SRV + Double Trouble) in an interview, but there it is. Mr. Sorum's playing with Mr. Billy F. Gibbons was inspiring...simple....pocket...swing I grew up on rock, blues, jazz, classical etc. The current state of music, is well....not good. We need to bring back the groove, the funk, the blues. Mr. Sorum is bringing it!!!!!

Chris Layton and many other great drummers go largely unrecognized because all anyone ever wants to talk about are the drummers that are known for solos and show. Chris Layton was a mule pulling the cart and holding it all down and thats what a drummer is supposed to do

I don't know guys...I REALLY like Matt's playing and his personality - and god knows I'm not qualified to criticize an industry giant like him - but I'm not at all sold on his shuffle. It sounds exactly like what it is: a predominately-rock drummer doing a pretty good impression of a really good shuffle player. It's just a bit square, lacking the *SWING* that hard-core shuffle players just do naturally. Chris Layton wrote the book on white guys doing the TS, and Greg Bissonette does as good a copy as I've heard. Of course Layton spent a career shuffling behind SRV, and Bissonette has a heavy jazz/swing background, so i guess it makes perfect sense.
@jaybreen10105 жыл бұрын
This! He doesn't seem to have a handle on the nuance that makes the Texas shuffle distinct - it swings, but sharply - like almost dotted-eighth sixteenth on each beat. Yes, the hands double that figure, four on the floor often, but it's that sharp swing that drives the whole thing. Play it too round and triplety and it sounds...well like a rock drummer trying to pass off like Texas blues drummer.

You guys have to fix the website. It seems like every single guitar I look at it says “Act fast! One other person has this in their cart” shopping for an instrument online or in store is supposed to be a fun thing, and hopefully you get something you can bond and connect with. I’m reluctant to watch, let alone make offers on guitars already in someone else’s cart because why would the seller even entertain an offer if someone is willing to pay full price, that also sucks for me as a seller because I’m sure a potential buyer would feel the same way and not even bother making an offer if they see it’s already in someone else’s cart. Not only that, but there is literally a picture of a watch, it gives a hurry up and buy feel. I don’t want to be rushed into buying something because somebody saw a halfway decent deal at the listed price and isn’t satisfied with just watching it, they have to add it to their cart for later. Either buy it or watch it. Please find a way to fix this.

It’s all in the way they’re mixed. I think Price was uneven at times with his UYI mix for Sorum. Particularly with the snare and toms, alternating between too light (snare) and too heavy (toms). Although, in Bill’s defence, I think Sorum made some poor snare decisions on much of UYI that didn’t add to the songs at all. By contrast, Thompson and Barbiero kept everything level throughout AFD, and even gave special attention to the ride. Which, oddly, no one ever really mentions as much as they do the cowbell. They mic’d Adler absolutely perfect for that album, and managed to mask his limitations in the process. Sorum doesn’t have any limitations as a drummer, but, really didn’t finally put it all together sonically until Contraband.

No one will ever touch Beard or Layton on Texas shuffles... Matt is an ok drummer at best. As a good friend once said, there are great musicians who never (make it), and then nominal players who get really lucky. Matt is the latter.
