I completely relate to being in a season of loneliness. I go through that everytime I move as a military spouse. It is hard to invest in friendships and then one of you moves. It's something not talked about enough. People just say, "wow how cool that you get to live in so many places!"

It is so hard when friends move away. Even worse when they cut you out of their lives or they aren't the best for you and you have to "prune" them out. But-- remember you will ALWAYS HAVE MATT. SPRING RETURNS AFTER WINTER & NEW ADVENTURES & FRIENDS JUST AROUND THE CORNER. So have a weepy session & say, "I am so blessed to have met someone who means that much to me, that I would cry when they depart." You might meet a number of people that you wouldn't miss when they exit stage left. But also, don't put up walls to protect yourself. Each person we encounter is an opportunity to love or learn. I've seen people go through hard times. And lived through a difficult childhood myself. THE BEST thing you can do is wear your emotions on your sleeve. Something that gets met with a lot of resistance sometimes when you're a guy(me). But being able to voice your emotions and keeping your sanity is very important. Also if you have a mountain of unprocessed emotions. Find someone that can help you pick your way through all that stuff. Whether its hurt, or whatever it is. Staying true to who you are is the only way to being to count on yourself to be the person you need yourself to be. And thinking that you have to be someone else just because someone thinks they know you better than you do is a stupid stupid game.

I grew up in Japan as a missionary kid and that life is just so full of goodbyes. My older siblings left for college in America and I was apart from them for years, so many friends leave to go back to their home country, people come and go from international schools generally way more often than they do from public schools and all that so I am very familiar with goodbyes and lonliness and I get it, Abby!!
