I am so glad I found your channel, so many memories.... My grandma's name was Nadzieja also (Polish, Nadezda in Russian), she was born in Belarus in 1922. She married my grandpa in 1942 and she moved to Wolyn, My grandpa's family lived in Wolyn/Galizia for 200 years, after 1943/1944 massacre they moved to Poland. My grandpa's family hated her because she was "Russian" She passed away in 2006 and I miss her every day.

Incredible documentary! Very organic and a beautiful testament to the role our ancestors play in our lives. The contrast in generations and what your grandmother endured is so important for today. The modern world is not sustainable and destructive wars are an historical fact, so some young folks are trying to learn the survival traditions they were never taught. Making food with your grandma, is a beautiful way to share in her knowledge My father was born in the USA in 1923. My grandmother was born in 1890, Their lives were very different from today as they were farmers and self sufficient. I long for their knowledge, but I am a kid from the 1950s and lived in cities. We did not have a daschu (summer house) like the Russians kept when they went to live in the cities. (great idea)! I learned nothing about growing food. I lived in a city with dirty air to breath. But, now age 66 I am trying my hand at gardening and trying to learn survival skills . What I do remember from my childhood in New York City, was the "fall out shelters". Those made an impression. The war was still on, but cold, the fear of nuclear attack was on our minds. WW2 brought my parents out of the fields and into factories to build war machines. That was when women left the home to find jobs the men had left to fight in war. That was when farming stopped being taught and we started becoming a consumer culture. I pray the USA and Russia can find Peace. Both bear responsibility for the ongoing mess the world has been in since WW2. . I pray for every human being to carry peace in their hearts so world peace comes to be. I pray we all learn to grow our own food and keep our ancestors alive in our souls, long past the time they pass on. When your grandma is no longer in this world, know she is still with you. My father and grandmother are . We even have conversations. Know, your grandmother will continue to guide you! Your video inspired me. Thank you

Julia, this tribute to and mini-biography of your Gran is sooo very special! 🤗🥰 I was completely spellbound watching this and you brought a tear to my eye at the end of the video... Thank you so much for doing this for her (and for you). Well captured by you as well Matt. It was even more touching for me as I lost my Mom couple of weeks ago; she shared so many qualities with your Gran. Lots of love ❤

Much of my life was crafted by my Mother as well, she instilled values learned by doing life in western Romania, was displaced by WW 2 as a teen, was in Dresden when the bombers came in the early AM, she said her thoughts, it's over, we die, or we're liberated. It was the beginning of the end of Hitler. She was sponsored to Canada at 20 years of age. We have a great history and love for people of Eastern Europe, Western Russia, what is sad, people are spurred on to think others are less than, sorry, we are all God's kids, let's love each other.

I can tell there is a faith behind the mask, it was/is I'm sure from the school of life. Stay strong for her, as to soon you will want to talk with her, and it won't be possible, I speak from experience, I'm not 65 yet, but feel like a orphan as my parent have both passed, still many questions, my Mom was hesitant to speak of the war years, other than, never, never complain about Canada, she endured much at both forces in the Conflict of WW2, all I'll say it was because of her stunning beauty. Til her dying day, and at her memorial, it was noted by both family, friends, and people who knew her, her huge heart, and her forgiving spirit. And her heart was broken many many times, but she also shared what was left of it generously, and your Gramma is doing that too.

I saw the video where you shared the sad a recent loss of your beloved Gran. I decided to look back at some of these clips and I can see just how close you were and what a wonderful gentle soul she was. I’m so sorry for your loss Julia, try to take some comfort in the fact that many people never know a beautiful relationship like this and you will be able to pass on all that love, knowledge and recipes 😂 that you have shared with her. What a lovely video! Kind of reminded me of my late dad who was very stoic and accepting of the life he'd had. He served with the medics who were involved in the liberation of Belsen and he was unable to talk about the horrors he'd seen for over 20 years. Just as your gran said, when I was young I wasn't interested enough to ask questions and I bitterly regret that. My dad died in 2003 aged 83 and it's only since then that I've really begun to understand just what he went through and I hope he knows how proud I am of him. I would love to hear more of your lovely gran's stories. What she thinks of as an unremarkable life, is anything but and I hope she'll share some more memories soon. Please tell her that I said hello from England.

Julia & Matt, what a great video you have given us here. Very well done! It is a privilege to hear such personal stories from your grandmother. She is a living part of history, and I could listen to her talk for days! The strong bond you have with her is so evident and very special, and to get to listen to her share her thoughts while also sharing a family moment of cooking together makes it even that greater. I can’t say enough how much this video touched me, to the point where I even shed a tear at Julia’s closing comment about her love for her gran. This was truly a great one, guys! Spasibo!

This video was absolutely wonderful. The videography, both you and your Gran storytelling, and the backdrop of making the Vareniki was awesome. No way were we jumping to 4:57 for words! Oftentimes, when we watch your videos and see a fully stocked grocery store or BMW's driving down the streets we wonder how people that grew up in the old Soviet Union think of life now. Your Gran's answer to the question of "Are things better now or then" was so insightful...

Thank you for sharing this. I watched another woman talk to her mother about Russia and I learned very soon that her mother was only one year older than I am. Of course I am 62. It was less than I expected although it was longer. My mother was born in 1931 in the US. We had a refrigerator all my life. We had a television but it was black and white. I didn't think we would have color. We Didn't have lots of money. When I was 16 a man who was living in our house bought us a color TV and once a week I would come downstairs and watch it so that I could see Donny and Marie in color. Otherwise I had a little television in my room and it was black and white maybe 13 inches, portable. Until I was 14 I shared a bedroom with my brother. And we watched that TV in our parents bedroom while they watched in the living room or my mother did the dishes. Then my father built us bedrooms in the attic. They were pretty small. And the wall was very thin. But it was okay. And he each had our own TV. I had a record player. The man who gave us the TV bought me a stereo. All the record players I had before would always break. This one worked a long time. My mother remembered her childhood but mostly bad things. I guess if you ask you must be specific. When you were a child, did you play? Did you do chores? Did you do both? Or just one. It sounds like life was hard everywhere back then. Maybe a lot harder where your gran lived. I am glad that the people got along despite the ones that told on you if you stole a log. I am glad that you asked otherwise I would think the opposite. Most of my grandparents were dead by the time I was four. I only had one till I was 17 and we didn't see her very much. My parents did not like her. She adopted my cousin. My cousin was okay. Obviously I didn't see her very much either. My mother said that my grandmother was crazy. I asked her what kind of crazy but she didn't know. They took six of her children away and put them in foster care. My mother was always with my aunt. My aunt said she was going to live with my mother when they were grown up and she did until she got married. I loved my aunt. I loved my mother too but she was my mother and she had to be responsible to bring us up properly so she couldn't always be nice and loving like she was with everyone else on earth. Sometimes she had to yell at us. But I still loved her. Just less than everyone else in the world loved her. She didn't want to have a funeral and all the neighbors got mad at me because we did not have a funeral. They all wanted to say how great she was. They could have said it when she was alive. I'm sure that is what she believed also. Tell people they are good while they are still alive. After they are dead it doesn't matter. My father did not have a funeral either. He probably thought it was a waste of money. He didn't like to waste money. And I don't think a lot of people would come to say he was wonderful. Although he did have friends. Maybe he only screamed at us children. There were two of us. I was lucky to be a girl. My brother had to help and learn how to do man things. And my father would yell when he did them wrong. It was hard to listen to. My father yelled a lot. And you never knew when it was coming. All my friends and relatives who visited my house, they knew that he yelled a lot. He didn't say positive things. If he loved us, I was not aware. Maybe when Christ returns...

I ran accross your channel trying to find out as much as I can about Russian people...trying to normalize everyday Russians versus the Kremlin... Videos of Babushka like this need to get to the world eye.... can't get enough of Matt n Julia... keep the vlogs coming... Also I was very moved yesterday about a vlog of a couple around your age in Kherson... it is war zone type with a good outcome ... the love that these parents give to their daughter during most likely the hardest times of their lives is exceptional! if you want it is called "Family secretly film life in Russian-occupied Ukraine - BBC News" Thanks guys!

My grandparents came to the US from Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine. I see so much of them in your grandmother, and your relationship. I also tried to capture my grandmothers' experience growing up with one foot in the old world and one foot in the new world. The food we eat is the same, even if we speak the names in yiddish half the time and Russian half the time. Thank you so much for sharing your babushka with us. It really makes me rethink how tough they were, how tough we are, and how much I cherish their stories. And it reminds me that I can live far more simply.

Julia and Matt I am so glad you made this video. My Grandparents were from just outside of Kiev and lived during the time of the czars. They immigrated to Canada in 1913 and 1914, a long time ago. I am now 75 and I remember sitting with my Grandmother making vereniki just like you. I never really had the opportunity as a child to ask her questions of what life was like when she was growing up. She would say it was so horrible that she didn't want to talk about it. About `ten years ago I visited Russia as a tourist and it made me wonder how her little village looked. We saw some little villages where horse and carriage were still being used and the houses looked like I imagined her house looked. Thanks for doing this video. It's as if my Gran is also talking to me through your Gran. We called her Bubbi. Both you and Matt and your Gran are very special people.

The way your babushka leans herself is exactly how my babushka used to (at 17:56). I have never seen anyone else do that.

That was so sweet. I loved watching you together, and looking at the pictures of when you were young. You both looked so easy and comfortable with each other, just melting together. Precious.

Lovely video Julia; I can only hope that my grand daughter will feel about me the way you do about your Gran. That will mean I have been a success as a grand parent.

Thank you so much for sharing. My grandmother was from the same time period in the US. We had some polish influences in some of our cooking. The food looks delicious. Makes me hungry.

That was so Interesting to hear your grand talk. People In New Zealand think we have it hard but not as hard as your grand had. She is a wonderful lady and you are so blessed to have her. Yes try to get as much history as you can be cause you will be able to pass it on to your children .here like all European countries we are a throw away society now. That includes our elders. May your gran live much longer bless you all and thankyou. Love to your gran from New Zealand.

@Matt and Julia - Thank you for sharing this touching story of your grandmother’s life experience. She’s an amazing woman! You’ll be grateful for the time you two shared, and the knowledge she’s imparted to you from the wisdom she’s gained through life’s journey. Totally O/T - You gonna share the recipe you guys made? That looks delicious!!! lol
