I attended Winston-Salem State back in this time. He was a pretty good QB for us, and for more context we were a bit of D2 powerhouse, and definitely the best hbcu football program back in those days. In 2012 we made it to the D2 championship game and got smoked by Valdosta state. We had quite a few D1 transfers back between 2010-2014 due to the success on the field and how fun the school was off the field, lots of beautiful women. Thanks for sharing, brought back great memories, and I’m glad Sims is doing well.

Grew up in Winston-Salem. I remember him at Alabama and Virginia. When he came to WSSU I was shocked. Glad to see how his life turned out. Thanks Matt!

I smoked a few blunts with him at some Alabama parties when we both attended the university. He had this air about him that screamed homesick, you know? In social settings, he just simply didn't seem like he fit in. People forget we were just kids back then. I spoke to him cause i noticed him at a party, a common occurrence for ball players. But you never saw ball players at the white frats cause Tuscaloosa super racist and the fans love black people when we are on the field, but not socially. So black players were routinely at the black frats cause that's the only place to party that accepted everyone regardless of skin color(yes, this was just a little over a decade ago, go figure) . Anyways, he was standing alone, not in the same atire us southerners were in. I follow football and wanted to walk on, even roomed with some ball players so i knew of him, but he whipped out a blunt so quick and lit it, passed it and we barely ever spoke, he was really really quiet. We got along cause I was born in Germany and lived in Japan long before the USA and felt the same culture shock of being in the deep south as him. Good man, I just needed to be round his people. Much love for spotlighting the old homie.

4-Star on Rivals. Seem like bad advice. Dont think he was ever going to start. McElroy was hurt going into the national championship. Saban said himself if he couldn’t play, he would pull the redshirt off AJ. So how was Sims going to start over a guy Saban was wiling to play in the national championship game as a true freshman? Sims should’ve gone where he was gonna be guaranteed to start.

I’m glad you finished it with some positivity because I can’t let you disrespect Phil. I played with Phil at WSSU, first of all put some respect on our name. Phil wasn’t the only former Bama player in our roster that season, and they weren’t the only power 5/ group 5 players on the roster. We were only 2 years removed from D1. Our coaches were great and we were coming off a National Championship game run. Was projected to be back and had Phil not been ineligible that season. We would have easily run the table. At least nine or more players from that team alone sign some form of contract to play either in NFL/CFL. All 32 NFL teams sent scout to our practice at least weekly. So Phil choosing WSSU at the time was no brianer we was the hottest them in D2 football at the time. Them NFL scouts followed him. He was a great guy and leader for us. I have nothing but respect for Phil, but don’t disrespect my school like that..
