I think it will help the product a whole lot if they make/elect Saban(or someone) as commissioner of college football and then have a committee come up with the rules/regulations for NIL and anything else that arises! Not sure why we have to wait on Congress when they can come up with their own governing body to make the rules.

If you look at college football history (which is long) there have been many years when the SEC or the South in general wasn't as dominant, so these things come and go. If you consider that the South in general is a HUGE area it's not wrong for people to worry if everyone in their backyard is struggling. I don't think it's weird for Midwesterners to do the same. Personally I think the far bigger challenge is that the Northeast and to some degree parts of the West don't have as many fans. How to improve college football viewership: put the game on national TV, do not put the championship game on unAmerican and unpatriotic ESPN, shorten the college football season, eliminate the conference championship games, don’t put the games up against NFL games, and improve the selection process. As long as ESPN is the sole media partner, ratings will continue to tank. The playoffs need multiple media partners, and the championship game should rotate amongst them. The game also needs to be on OTA, not subscription service access. Then you get into the season length. January 20th? Way too late. Monday night? Terrible night for the game. The NFL playoff game was a 4pm kick. The Championship game could’ve kicked off on Saturday at 8/8:15. As far as the teams, they were the last 2 standing. The only undefeated team going in was oregon, and everyone else was at least 2Ls

In your honorable opinion, who were the 2 best teams of this past season?
@davenelson736222 сағат бұрын
I enjoyed the 12 team playoff and I think it should be tweaked in the upcoming years to make it more interesting. How the committee could do that? I’m not sure. I do know Ohio St would not have made the 4 team playoff with the two regular season losses. That being said, I believe their loss to Michigan woke them up. They made the playoffs and beat the snot out of the best teams in the nation. I like your basketball tournament comparison Matt. Ohio State got hot in the playoffs and nobody could beat them. It was much deserved. And I say that as a Michigan fan.

I'll be honest. I think they should've kept the 4 team playoff. It keeps the importance of winning games evident and the rivalry games being important for tradition. The 12 team playoff has made teams too comfortable to drop a game or two because they know that if they win out, they will get in. Like you said in the video, in the BCS and 4 team CFP era, teams couldn't afford losing a game. I know that they most likely won't change it back but I feel like the passion and desire in college football isn't the same as it used to. Anyways, great video Matt! Love from a Michigan fan.

I don’t think that format works with the super conferences thats why they needed to extend it. I think what the 12 team playoffs have done is make the regular season more exciting. I found myself invested in games that in previous season i couldn’t care less because the two teams had no chance of going into the playoffs. I think they should have just extended to 8 teams though.
@rizenascar23 сағат бұрын
@@brandonconforto315 I can agree with you there. With you mentioning the super conferences, an 8 team playoff would work. I just feel like the 12 team playoff is too much.

@ it could be the length between all the games. Paul Finebaum mentioned this and got some hate for it but there is no reason we can’t do the first round the weekend of the Army and Navy Game and the second round the next weekend after that. Then have the semis on NYD and then the championship no later then the 10th

When you only cater to 13% of the population, your going to go bankrupt. Secondary to that, the gambling has turned sports into something unwatchable. Many people are opposed to gambling and want nothing to do with it. When 90% of the advertising is for gambling, people are going to tune out. I couldn't even get through typing this without being hit with a gambling advertisement.

The corollary is that if you lose an early season game the rest of your regular season is meaningless…..Playoffs make the entire season valuable. Your thinking is backward.
@wolver7315 сағат бұрын
OSU and ND both had early season losses.
@samrobinson772614 сағат бұрын
@ that’s my point. In the d system, Notre Dame’s early season loss would have made it nearly impossible for them to play for a national championship.
@TimmyBeGreater16 сағат бұрын
So many more games this year meant something because you can slip up and that does not necessarily mean the entire season is over. I’m fine if the playoffs need to be tweaked but this season was far more interesting as a whole because a single loss does not end all hope.

The college football schedule drags into the NFL, overlapping with Divisional Rounds where Detroit lost and the Bills won due to a dropped pass. The NFL dominated Monday’s media. Most fans focus on the Conference Championships, and with Ohio State expected to win and it airing on ESPN, not ABC many didn’t bother watching.

People are becoming disengaged because they preferred college football over the NFL. Amateur vs pro. In the pro's players get cut or traded to other teams. Not to mention the insane money that NFL players make. With the NIL and portal. Now college football has become pro football and a lot of fans do not like that and the direction college football has gone. Yes the schedule is getting to long, but for me it's the millions of dollars being thrown at the players that is ruining college football. It's like what Nick Saban said when Miss Terry went to him after the gathering of players and parents. "'All they care about is how much you're going to pay them. They don't care about how you're going to develop them, which is what we've always done. So why are we doing this?". Just wait three years from now when the majority of college players who do not get drafted to the NFL. Who make millions in college are suddenly out of college with no degree, and no job prospects. Not to mention how they have spent all of the money they made in college. "a fool and his money are soon parted". There will be a glut of former college players going to bankruptcy court. I want to see these players succeed in life. Even if they do not make it to the NFL, but right now they are acting like spoiled brats. Making demands for playing time and other perks. They do not get developed and they are set up for failure. To boil it down. The portal and NIL are what is killing college football, and why college football fans are tuning out.

You forget matt, they didnt implement the playoff system for the fans. They did this for more money.
@SilentLamb9999 сағат бұрын
Not really. College football gonna generate insane revenue regardless. They did it because these teams bitching and complaining, and then getting sued by certain programs. So now it’s no excuse for any team to not be in the playoff.

You have the most hated team, and the most irrelevant team (OSU fan)... It needs to be made where 2 conferences meet. That's what everyone wants to see. Make same join the big 10 and then every year you'll have the 2 best of different sides of the country playing.
@donjuan9149 сағат бұрын
The problem is mismanagement of the playoffs. They waste basically the entire month of December, they have too many days between playoff games and they having the game on a Monday doesn’t help. Having a 12 team playoff is fine, they just need to do a better job at setting up the brackets and they need to get the ball rolling on the games quickly so that momentum from the season isn’t lost. By the time they got to the championship, people had forgotten that there was there was still football to even be played.
@brookico14 сағат бұрын
Yeah, for the past 20 years IDT I have missed a national championship game and this year I already knew who was winning the game so I didn’t feel the need to watch it. The inauguration didn’t help I’m sure, but the main ceremony for it was earlier in the day so I just don’t think it was a huge reason for the low viewership. I think most people that watched were Ohio State or ND fans and some die hard CFB fans. This entire season felt lackluster. Maybe it was just one of those off years, IDK. I do remember Ohio State winning the natty in 2014 and even though I’m not an Ohio State fan ( and they beat my team that year and knocked us out) I was excited to watch them play Oregon. Maybe it was just a weird year, IDK.

@mrray779223 сағат бұрын
OSU fan here, I think 4 games post season is a little much, and they held the game on a Monday/inauguration day... Then add the fact that nobody wanted to see Norte Dame in the natty and everyone hates OSU because they are always good... If it was OSU Georgia it would've been a cinema. But it's also not dame or OSU fault that the sec sucked this year. But Texas OSU was thee game of the playoffs. Only team in cfb that had a chance at stopping that OSU run.
