2% of D1 football players make it to the NFL. If the other 98% of the players are not taking advantage of the education; then that is their fault. 55% of players who enter the portal do not get picked up. Since 2016, Bama graduates 93% of their football players. Ohio State 87% UGA 41% We are still in the Wild West era of NIL and transfer portal. Changes need to be made for both.

They need two year contracts then after two years, you can re-up with that school for another two years or transfer on to another school. The coach should also have the option to not re-up your deal after those two years so the portal works both ways and coaches can make roster changes if they see fit. The only time you should be able to transfer a second time is if you graduate and have another year of eligibility left. Change the portal calendar to after the season and allow mid semester transfers for athletes. These are just some basic things, i understand there are a lot more details but they gotta start somewhere

Part of the problem is that enrollment deadlines are before the end of the playoffs at schools. It’s not just academics. The coaches want the players enrolled at their new school so that they can participate in spring practice. Transfer portal and the enrollment schedule is a hot mess.

No, the credits won’t transfer. Classes end now. BEFORE bowl season really begins so, what’s the solution? Dual enrollment? Spring Entry only? Idk if they can change it on the academic side, which makes the transfer portal more valuable. The biggest flaw is that the schools get to enjoy all of the huge profits and the teams are out here begging fans for money to pay players. Hell I'm a Bama fan and they are puting out messages begging for money. How about calling Alabama senator and former Auburn coach Tommy Tubberivle and push for legal regulation so the school can pay the players. If we leave it up to the school they'll never volunteer to pay the players. What other businesses gets to keep every penny of profit and not pay it's employees or contractors? It's ridiculous the amount of money made during the college football season by these schools and then after raising ticket prices and food prices at the games, you then have the freaking nerve to basically call out the fans and say y'all need to kick in more. The way you can regulate it is by implementing a collective bargaining agreement between student athletes and the institutions they’re employed by like the pros . They’re getting paid now so it’s not amateur anymore so you got to treat it as such like the pros. The agreement can be if we pay you and give you a contact give us a year and a half commitment then we can either renegotiate and if we can’t come to an arrangement or you wanna leave you can hit the portal. Bc they only have 4-5 years max on their eligibility sign shorter contracts between them to not have the portal so congested with players that get stuck in there.. But definitely close the portal til after the bowls end too.

That is a great point. These athletes are not really there to get an education. I will go back to before the transfer portal. Athletes got scholarships to attend college. Those scholarships were not 4 year deals. They were one year with an option for renewal, and that option was with the school! There is no “student/athlete.” They are now paid athletes. That school doesn’t care if those athletes get an education.

All I'm gonna say is the FCS 24-team playoff has the semifinal games this Saturday, meaning that the entire playoff (minus the championship) is over before Christmas. It is logistically possible to play a 12-game season, conference championships, and 22 of your 23 playoff games by the end of Fall semester, giving you time to enroll at your new school. It can be done, but will never be done as long as money controls cfb. It's the sad truth.

The transfer portal has to line up with the semester because at the end of the day colleges are a business based around degrees. Yes they make money from sports but each team is an academic institution that answers to their local governments not just an amateur sports league.

Matt, college football is not the center of academic institutions believe or not. The tens of thousands of those kids on campus, 99% of them are not college football athletes. It doesn’t matter if these kids “don’t go for the academics”, it’s a literal requirement for them to have good academic standing in order for them to play, so they NEED to be enrolled before the deadline. Also, 99% of the players in college football aren’t making the NFL, they need academics in order to have a chance in their future besides football. At the end of the day, Universities are meant for education, they aren’t going to bend their rules for guys already making at least 5-6 figures playing football for them, nor are they going to bend the rules for nerds like you who sit on the couch and eat cheesy puffs while watching the playoffs. Matty, what do you think about new early enrollee HS recruits being able to practice with their new team during this CFP postseason? Texas has multiple 2025 HS recruits coming in this week for physicals then after sitting for a couple days while they await everything to clear can begin practicing with the team as early as next week. They won’t be able to play in this postseason but they’ll get an early jump by participating actively in practices now in December way before the Spring season begins.

As a Georgia fan, I strongly disagree that this is a problem. These are STUDENT athletes, so school must come first. My proposed solution is that the season starts mid August and the regular season ends the first week of November. Eliminate the second bye week (potentially the conference championship games) and have the playoffs end second week of December. Of course this can be reworked but I think this can eliminate the transfer portal problem.

They should open the transfer portal on February 1st. This is after the National Championship game. No players can declare they will enter the portal outside of the portal window. This is important as to not destabilize teams. The portal should run until Fall classes begin.
