Absolut magic, when we came to 'Unter den Linden' and saw the Brandenburg Gate. Almost in tears when it came insight. The last 1,2km was almost like flying.

I heard that regular runners could have water/hydration bottles delivered to aid stations. But finding your own bottle could be an issue. You might need to decorate the bottle in a unique way to spot it from distance.

These majors are sure tricky to get into! Yes, you could have your own hydration and you can imagine the decorations runners put on the bottles to make them stand out! Even so, there was a lot of bottles and I wouldn't have enjoyed searching for mine! 🤣

🧭Great race and recap. I remember my first Chicago Marathon in 2004 and was surprised at the volume of people relieving themselves in the park. Over time that became not needed with more porta Potties and easy access to them.

It seems like over the years race directors have realized that enough porta-potties make for a much better overall race experience.

Hi Matt, thanks for your video. Very nice race rcap. I ran as well so maybe you allow me some comments on the water stations. I started about 1h after you. The mess of plastic cups on the street was gigantic. The hard plastic cups were an experiment with reusable cups (failed for me). The was water on both sides every other station. The strange stuff you tasted was a Maurten drink. Tasted bad, but worked well on me. Btw, nails are nice.

Still, good for them for trying something new!

@@its_Matt_B_ Great video Matt, I also once wanted water and had Maurten Drinx Mix in my hand. I spoiled some of it in the face and hand. It's super unpractical with these plastic cups. I rather have gels and use water. Ideally isotonic drinks like Gatorade but this is rather uncommon in Germany.

Congrats again, Matt. You ran an awesome race and the pacing was spot on. I heard any Berlin first timers are put in the back corrals regardless of their projected finish time. Given how congested this race is; faster runners are unable to plow through easily. Let’s hope they change this somewhat odd policy soon!

⏱It was my third start in Berlin after 2021 and 2022. The crowds this year were absolute massive! Almost double to 2021, when mainly Europeans could take part because of Covid restrictions. It was a lot of fun to run in these crowds this year, even if I had similar issues with crossing bikes and pedestrians as you mentioned. But I remember the squeezing people from both sides in parts of Brooklyn as well, when I ran the NYC Marathon in 2019. And of course, congrats to your finish!

HI Matt, great video and totally agree with the water stop congestion. On a good news story those hard plastic cups which were hard to drink from were made from corn syrup so completely biodegradable, albeit super crunchy and slippery under your feet.

And then there are refreshment points with water, fruit, tea and Maurten DRINK MIX 160 (9km, 15km, 20km, 25km, 30km and 36km) which are on both sides of the road.

⏱️ congratulations on a great race. I did Berlin and didn’t have as great of a day. I slowed starting about 14 miles and didn’t quite hold my goal paces after that. Definitely experienced the crowds and if I had been feeling great I do think passing was challenging. Had several collisions at the water stops and glad no one got hurt from me at least. Sometimes I think things just don’t go to plan and not sure I can blame the crowd or any one factor. Definitely glad I did this one!

Nice work, Matt. Curious.... where within the HR zones did your HR actually sit/move (i.e. mid Zone 2 to top Zone 3 etc)? As a 1st time (NY) it feels like the main mystery I need to figure out. I have a pretty good Idea, but also hate the idea of getting it WAY wrong in either direction. Yes, my long runs are working it all out for me, but it's interesting many people talk about the arbitrary numbers but not in the context of zonal movement (which can be more relatable).

Hey Ben! Good luck in NYC! The majority of my run was in zone 3, with the next highest being zone 4. I went into zone 5 towards the end for a short time. Through my training it has become apparent I can hold a higher heart rate far easier during a race, when I have that extra motivation, that I ever can on a training run. But perhaps that's also because training in the Florida heat makes everything seem just a little more difficult. Remember that it's a race and it's not supposed to be easy. You can always slow your roll if you see your HR getting a little high!

I’m a little hesitant to give advice on running technique unless it is backed up by some kind of study and I have done at least one video in the past on it. Congrats on a great race! I ran it last year and totally agreed about the water station. It was one of my best marathons. I was surprised by how crowded the race was this year compared to the previous year. I think the difference in the number of runners made a huge impact. I wonder if the field size will stay the same for 2025 or if it was due to the 50th Berlin Marathon. ⏱

⏱️Great to meet you at the BITR shakeout run. Agree with you about the water stops. I live in Chicago and have both run the marathon and volunteered at water stations. Berlin’s were too short, inexplicably only on one side of the course, lacked Gatorade (or similar electrolyte drink), lacked paper cups you could pinch and were generally just a big mess. My slower splits were where there were water stations. BUT great race and loved the entire experience.

I ran my first marathon last November (Athens, Greece) and the crowds and water stops sound similar to what you are describing. I would recommend the marathon to others and was really happy and proud to have completed it but.....I got tired of trying to pass people and also trying to not run into people and towards the end, I was annoyed and felt it was just overcrowded a bit. I think it is an interesting topic to discuss are the crowds getting too big at popular marathons. Note: The Athens marathon had bottled water and water stops were very slippery and tricky and I did run into people multiple times but never fell thankfully!

Something was wrong with corral assignments or management as I was passing people for many KM that should not have been in front of me. No crowd control barricades in many areas leading to spectator in the course or crossing (with bikes!).
