2024 BYD Dolphin Review: Today's CHEAPEST EV (blew me away...)

I had really low expectations of the BYD Dolphin...
The reality is the new MG4 is almost as cheap but comes with a rear-wheel drive platform and is one of the best cars I've driven this year. So imagine my surprise when I got into the front-wheel drive BYD Dolphin, and it provided one of the nicest rides dollar-for-dollar I've ever felt. Of course, it does a lot more than that, with a crazy-looking interior, phenomenal technology, and a surprisingly dynamic drive (though the Linglong tyres ruin that somewhat...). Still, in today's review, I'm going to tell you why Australia's cheapest electric car is a REALLY good buy!

The video describes the Dolphin very well. I have owned a Dolphin (150 kW, 60 kWh) for 4 months and after 10,000 km I have to say that it is a very good vehicle. The Linglong tires are also surprisingly good. It has a few small flaws, but at this price I can accept that.

Really balanced review. The Dolphin handles quite well and your spirited driving demonstrated its capabilities. Few people would be aware that you can watch the KZbin video that you produced right on the Dolphin’s monitor; simply by side-loading an app. You certainly can’t do that on the MG!

In the UK BYD supply the Dolphins with Hankook tyres and they transform the driving, in a good way of course.

The real question is would you pick the Dolphin or the MG4? We bought the Dolphin. Mostly because the Dolphin Premium had a LFP battery and better features for less money. Driving performance is nice and all but I’ll take creature comforts thanks

I really just dont get the name. It's honestly just...so lame or strange? Had to adjust the currency to mine to get a fewl of the price. Crazy they can get it so low. But of course with such a cheap price cant help but feel there is a catch somewhere along the way

I don't know if it's just me but the design of the front of the dolphin looks like the car equivevelent of the LDV EV80. I personnally really like the look of the interior except for the digital gauge cluster and tablet car manufacture seem to be sticking on to every car but I have this complaint with just about every new car.

How about the insurance costs for the BYD? It seems all EVs have astronomically high insurance costs due to the expensive repairs

Just got a quote on a Seal Performance as I'm picking mine up tomorrow. Quote came in at $1200. That's $500 less than my Kia Stinger GT.
