Wow! What a great interview Matt and thank you Paul for such lovely insights in addition to the great playing. You both made me want to pick up my banjo right away! Jamie

This was so worth the wait! Beautiful playing. His comments about the freedom to experiment and mess up are so freeing. I also love how Matt had almost childlike wonder at times in hearing his hero and mentor play. I loved every minute of this video.

Thanks both. I loved hearing about how he started to learn the banjo. I'm a little older than Paul and well remember learning guitar by trying to work out what people like Woody Guthrie and the young Bob Dylan were doing. And later Mississippi John Hurt. Really listening and ruining my dad's record player stylus. By the time I fell for banjo about 10 years ago there was so much help and inspiration available on the web. So thanks Paul and Matt and a big shout out to Tom Collins' clawhammer help.

My favorite interview to date, Matt! So grateful for this! Loved all of the different tunings, but loved most how Mr. Brown gives us permission to be fluid and make tunes our own❣️🪕

Thanks for sharing this. I only "discovered" the banjo this year, and I now own two of them. I want to learn a little clawhammer eventually, but for now, even though I'm not a very good musician, two finger style seems the most intuitive to me. I have enjoyed watching several of your other interview videos, so keep up the good work.

I started on frailing the banjo, then came double thumbing or drop thumb frailing, and maybe a year or two later I got started on two finger picking, which Art Rosenbaum called "two finger Kentuckey thumb lead". Nowadays, many a time I'll start a tune in one style and then lapse into the other style without really thinking about it. That's frailing/clawhammer and two finger style, they seem at least to me to be very complimentary to each other.

Great discussion and banjo. Would have liked to hear about North Carolina index lead two finger used by Doc Watson, Arnold Watson and Wade Mainer.

Really enjoyed hearing Paul play and his insights. What was the tuning Paul used for "Cacklin' Hen"? Thanks!
