Wow, this is so cool. I also had this set, and as many others, I have many fond memories of playing with it. I hooked a motor to the engine, propped the wheels up in the air and "drove" the car. I powered the poor motor with 12 volts, which eventually made the motor melt. It had got so hot that the solder had melted and been flung all around the motor. So wonderful to see it in full scale. And the sound of that engine.

That sounds like a great idea - put it in something light enough like the original mini and you can probably have it limp in on a relatively small and concealable electric motor, perhaps pushing the Lego pistons around by leaving the original gearbox in and in gear - so it sounds almost like a real engine...

Very cool. I actually use PLA for gears in my RC racing cars. They hold up ages as long as there's a thin film of grease. I use a small paint brush to apply the grease as a thin layer so it doesn't splash off the gear in use, and that's all it ever needs. The touring cars I drive in my recent videos all use 3D printed gears, dog bone cups and pulleys.

When I had that car model, I used an old lego train motor, which I think is called an x469b, which with a tiny change, was able to fit straight onto the back of the engine, where the axle protruded a little, just like it does in your model. I am not sure if lego designed it that way, but it was a pretty perfect match, as it also rested on those lugs which stick out the back of the engine. The motor in question was already a gear motor, so contained a gearbox to slow down the rotation. It had four places where lego train wheels could be inserted, and another, off centre hole, which fitted a technic axle, which if I remember correctly lined up pretty well with the shaft of the engine. I can't be sure now, but as far is I know, there was no official technic motor at the time, so it was period accurate at the time. Because of the form factor of that motor, if you 3d printed one, there would be ample room for a battery box, speed controllers, a metal gearbox, and of course a large motor.

I remember that motor. I had one in yellow :) 👌👍

Hearing that inner child laugh come out was so genuine. That new feeder will help with the longer beams for sure. Can't wait to see the completed unit like most but enjoying the build process. You'll have to do a cost analysis at the end along with total weight etc. I know you've made estimates but I'm curious as to the overall weight at the end. Keep up the good work. -G

This is the coolest thing on KZbin!! Loved the seats, but the engine coming to life, is simply awesome! So many memories from my childhood! I’ve still got the set of course, just haven’t built it for years in standard form! Can’t wait to see it progress!

I can't say that this is the coolest thing you've ever made as it's the only thing I have ever seen you make. It is pretty cool though. I'm also a child of the 80's but I never grew up with technic. I'm sure I would appreciate it more if I had. Good job mate. I'm sure your boy is in awe of his old man's builds. If not then he should be!!

Love it! I did back in the days the same mistake with putting the axel not in the fixed position of the cogwheel AND then putting as well the piston assembly wrong way round in! :)

😆 I think that caught so many people out!

The coolest thing you ever made? You bet it is! The seats were already awesome, but to see (and hear....) that engine actually spinning is just on another level. Can't wait for the next part!

You should check out some lego vacuum engines, they're fantastic little creations, they move up to 7-8k rpm!

@@MattDenton They can be 3D printed too so won’t have to worry if you don’t have the necessary parts! :)

When i made a wooden clock, i used wax as a lubricant for the cogs so that might help if you rub wax on the pistons.

I remember when my brother got that original Lego Technic kit at christmas, it was the best thing ever back then, and later the red framed one.

Mate this is absolutely brilliant. I would have done exactly the same testing the engine with the drill like that. Immensely pleasurable when it works well!!!

Been following your Lego creations for a while now. This is my first time commenting. I'm always floored at how well all this works with just 3D printed parts and some tweaking here and there. I love creating stuff as well, just never got around to youtubing things I make and often by the time I have the notion that I should have filmed what I did, the projects done and it's too late... so I get a bit jealous watching your videos but honestly, I love every minute. From the successes to the set backs. Even witnessing your genuine enjoyment with what you have made. Perhaps one day I can join you in the youtube world and share my creations. Maybe no one would care to watch.... either way, I'm glad your sharing and I just wanted you to know I am very glad I stumbled upon your content. It's nostalgia wrapped creativity at its finest.

Thanks Michael! As a first comment it’s a good one 👍 honestly I just like making things, abs having to stop abs film them is annoying 😆 but I feel I should share them.. otherwise they will just sit on a shelf gathering dust :)
