I remember vividly begging my parents for this very expensive set for them at the time !! I finally got it for my birthday, learned so much about differentials, gear box, etc. A few years after I got the fantastic 8851 Excavator and discovered pneumatics. 15 years later I passed my engineering degree :D

My dad wanted this set really badly as a kid, but when he finally saved up enough money to order one (via phone, because 80s!), they told him they’d just sold the last one. So a few years ago I bought the set for him on BrickLink, assembled and disassembled it in secret to make sure all the parts were there, and gave it to him for Christmas. So 8860 is special to both of us, and I look forward to seeing how this project turns out!

The 8860 set was released in 1980. Say the designers were in their 30s then, which means they are now in their 70s and probably many of them are still alive. I really hope some one points out this video series to them. It must have been amazing to first experience that the set they designed became one of the most iconic Lego sets of all time, and then to - 40+ years later - find out some one is building a 500% scale replica...

The 8860 is beautiful, 8865 is bit more complex but the 8880 is too ugly and modern in its looks, but it does pack a lot of functionality especially the gear box and double steergn mechanism are delightful. But the newer ones are too difficult to motorize due to their weight and the complexity of the shafts involved. Always test your designs on a flat stiff surface. A carpet is very large surface area of resistance when testing motorized design, puts enormous strain of the gear assemblies.
@LOOKMUMNOCOMPUTER

@@mikkelbreiler8916 im afraid we would have to agree to disagree, maybe an age thing. the 8880 to me is the definition of the ultimate lego technics kit in function and looks, however thats probably because i grew up in that generation of lego technic development. and thats why i have one on a shelf haha :D

Something to keep in mind might be how many small pieces are in this build. I suspect the added surface area of so many pieces is going to make it weigh much more than your initial calculations, since you can't reduce infill of the exterior surface. The outside of each print has to stay solid.

Lego Technic has been a part of my life for so long, and still is. This set, 8846 Tow Truck, with the spare wheel operating the winch at the front, and the 8848 Unimog. So many good sets back then.

Ah, the old 8848, a very much under-rated set. I did really love this one. Of course the 8848 is bigger with more scope, but as a great small model with some great functions, the original unimog was superb.

@@BRMRailway I had hours of fun with it, using the pneumatic excavator to fill the rear part with dried corn, then unloading it somewhere else. It took some finesse to make the rear part tilt gently, and not move to an angle suddenly. I did later change the steering to hand of god system, with a 4x4 trans yellow brick as flashlight, to make it a lot easier to drive.

I always found the pneumatic excavator disappointing. I was so excited for it but the pneumatics just didn’t work well. I’m amazed lego released it! The mk2 pneumatics were better.

Hi, I print the 8880 Supercar on my channel in 2.5 scale, so I think it can definitely be done. Nice to see that someone is even crazier than me and print such a huge lego kit in a even larger scale.

One modification I'll suggest is to add a second spider gear to the differential, and a bearing pin that goes all the way across and is secured into the case to prevent it from spreading apart when force is applied to the gears. Thrust washers between the spider gears and the case would also be a good idea.
@MattDenton
@MattDenton 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah the whole diff needs some attention and plenty of bearings 😬

I’ve still got my Lego car and the box in the loft. It was definitely one of the best Lego sets of the 80’s. I rebuilt it with my son a few years ago. There’s a weakness in chassis I found with the rear detaching it’s self. Seeing your an engineer, this shouldn’t be a problem in your build. Look forward to the final result.
