The 8860 set was released in 1980. Say the designers were in their 30s then, which means they are now in their 70s and probably many of them are still alive. I really hope some one points out this video series to them. The 8860 is beautiful, 8865 is bit more complex but the 8880 is too ugly and modern in its looks, but it does pack a lot of functionality especially the gear box and double steergn mechanism are delightful. But the newer ones are too difficult to motorize due to their weight and the complexity of the shafts involved. Always test your designs on a flat stiff surface. A carpet is very large surface area of resistance when testing motorized design, puts enormous strain of the gear assemblies.

Something to keep in mind might be how many small pieces are in this build. I suspect the added surface area of so many pieces is going to make it weigh much more than your initial calculations, since you can't reduce infill of the exterior surface. The outside of each print has to stay solid.

One modification I'll suggest is to add a second spider gear to the differential, and a bearing pin that goes all the way across and is secured into the case to prevent it from spreading apart when force is applied to the gears. Thrust washers between the spider gears and the case would also be a good idea.

Yeah the whole diff needs some attention and plenty of bearings 😬

Awesome - I was lucky enough to get one in ‘81 as a child - had forgotten about this bad boy 👍

I’ve still got my Lego car and the box in the loft. It was definitely one of the best Lego sets of the 80’s. I rebuilt it with my son a few years ago. There’s a weakness in chassis I found with the rear detaching it’s self. Seeing your an engineer, this shouldn’t be a problem in your build. Look forward to the final result.

You still have the box!!! Bravo 👏

Watching these big scale Lego models being build hurts my brain. I am so used to the size of the original bricks that my brain tricks my vision here. I

Hoooo I remember this kit I loved it. I also built a 4x4 with 4 independant suspension with IT back in a day. I'm going to open my old lego box and rebuild it.
@MattDenton3 жыл бұрын
Excellent! I built a 4x4 version but didn’t have front sus. :)

I think I’m one of the many who mentioned this kit early on :) Such a landmark for me- the peak, and my last Lego set. I remember building it and the bittersweet revelation that it was the end of my Lego road. Thank you for sharing your projects, this is fantastic!

When I was 10, that very model was on the top of my Christmas wishlist. Spent the entire Christmas building it. I agree on it being one of the best kits ever, not only from nostalgia. Instantly subscribed :)

I bought this set in 1980 when I was 14 years old with mine own earned money. Was a great set, was one of my last sets I got as a kid, still have it. Still get it out once every 5 years or so to build it. Will be interesting to see how it will turn out in the big scale.
