In the scene where Mia is telling her brother she absolutely needs to get out of there the actress has such a genuine look of terror that always stuck with me. You barley see characters in movies get that realistically scared.

No cap. That’s why I don’t get the hate or dislike of evil dead 2013. The acting in that movie alone especially by her was beyond phenomenal. I’m a pretty tough guy but if I ever got genuinely scared in general it would be just like how Mia expressed her fear.

@coldeed

They didn't do anything that the original did well. The original told me a story about five people that were genuinely friends being forced by an evil sadistic spirit to essentially deal with each other and what is both disturbing and traumatic. This is a silly cliche ghost story where it doesn't really seem like anyone gives a shit that they're all dropping like flies, aside from David trying to fix things with Mia. Which is really sad because I think the actors did a really good job trying to make the story work, but there's too many points in the movie where everyone in the cabin feels like a bunch of strangers that don't give two tiddly fucks about one and other because of how much time it wastes on the David and Mia drama. It was also too scared to go dark enough to force David to kill his sister, or vice versa, or even have someone else attempt to do that. To be honest how you make this a much more interesting movie to me is when you showed David's girlfriend or whatever the fuck she was sitting there carving turkey which was just far too obvious that she was going to cut herself with that damn thing to be scary actually take that tool and cut Mia's head off with it because that's literally just some bitch she don't fucking know iirc. But that would require her to be more of a character than David's girlfriend lol.

@@coldeed the original showed how Ash and Scotty were just trying to get laid with their girlfriends and dragged Cheryl along. The only genuine friends were probably Scotty and Ash lmao try again. Apart from Natalie, the others were long time friends and they emphasized the brother sister relationship w Mia and David. Ash didn’t seem to torn in the the following movies about what happened to his “best friend” and sister. The fact that you’re on here hating the movie when Bruce Campbell and Sam themselves were involved in the making shows how shallow and dense you are lmao. They specifically said this movie was created to be exactly what the original was meant to show. And they succeeded. Choke.

Something I particularly love about the 2013 remake is how they nailed the characters. If you look closely, they dress & act the same as their archetype counterparts in the 1981 original: You got the anxious sister in a red dress who gets possessed first, the brother who’s the last one standing wearing a blue shirt & sticking to a plan, his kind-hearted girlfriend in a white dress that takes “major head damage”, the blonde smart-ass in plaid who is responsible for unleashing the demons and dies after “resting”, and the blonde guy’s girlfriend in a warm color who’s the first to die. They didn’t need to pay *this* much attention to detail but they did, remaking the classic in every possible sense they could

If only they paid more attention to their own movie and made either of the dudes care about killing their love interests. Or didn't add stupid things like the first girl dead making dinosaur sounds while attacking the guy, glasses man reading a book out loud to himself like a total idiot, having that dude laugh are David kills his girl, having Mia actually have time to grow on the audience before she is just horrible behaved drug addict and then actual demon. Because lining up those things didn't make me like the characters. Eric (if that's his name) is the only one that seems to have natural reactions to anything. Most of the cast has no emotional continuity, and it's dumb that the girl that was too scared to hold a knife at Mia (who's practically a stranger to her) has the grit to saw her own fucking arm off minutes later. Or her better yet, not trying to fucking leave after Mia shoots her brother and the other guy bashes his gfs head in. Or David putting down his gf super easily but he just can't do it to Mia. Or Eric even giving a fuck what David thinks and not just torching the house himself. The other two only lack these issues by being either dead too quickly or possessed most of the movie. At least Eric had some personality, but most of the tension is killed by those 3 idiots twiddling their fucking thumbs in the cabin as shit gets worse around them.

The spookiest thing about it was that the main writer likes women commiting acts of self harm a bit too much lol. Little bit suspect, but really doesn't bother me any from a horror standpoint.

I'm glad this movie is getting acclaimed through the years, I remember back then some fans of the original hating it for no reason, and that movie doesn't has any problem at all, you have the presence of Bruce and Sam as producers, when you watch the making of you can see how much fede Alvarez cared for that movie, it wasn't just a cash grab for him, the care of making practical visual effects, the whole cast delivered on their roles and the characters felt like real people, and Jane Levy, she deserved an award for that movie, not only for her acting, but for the amount of work that got put on her shoulders.

Your comment about the subtext of addiction, detox and relapse made me reconsider the 2013 version of the “tree rape” scene. The sequence in which Mia’s arm is tightly encircled by a vine is also a metaphor for a user tying off a vein (placing a tourniquet) when preparing to “shoot up.” There is perhaps a suggestion that this moment, in which the evil forest forces this act upon Mia, references a time when her addiction had compelled such behavior by her. Good observation; I had originally taken the addiction storyline more as a plot convenience to gather all the characters at a remote cabin, but I appreciate the idea of a dual narrative.

1 - Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn 2 - The Evil Dead 3 - Evil Dead (2013) 4 - Army of Darkness Although it's ranked like that, it doesn't mean I hate Army of Darkness, y'know. It's just that Army is way more of a comedy adventure flick, which isn't bad (it's very charming and entertaining, actually), but, for me, it surely missed a little bit more horror to spice it up. In that sense, Ash V.S. Evil Dead, as a whole, balanced the terror and the comedy in an almost perfect way, just like the second movie did. And man, am I excited for Evil Dead Rise! Really interested in knowing how the ranking's gonna be after watching it.

One thing I love about this remake is that there's an actual reason they won't all leave when stuff starts happening. In the original, they all ignores Cheryl and called her crazy for no reason, even though she was clearly horrified and her clothes were ripped, only deciding last second "Hey we should take her to town" and by then it was too late. In the remake, Mia was in a detox session and her friends truly believed she was lying about seeing things and just wanted to leave to get drugs again, so they wouldn't take her until again, it was too late. It really makes the friend characters seem less like assholes who don't care about each other, and more like people who genuinely want to help their friend, by refusing to take them.

Someone should do a movie depicting the real life events of the making of the original movie. There might be enough meat on that bone for a legit movie, maybe exaggerate some bits.

It is a really good film, a really good remake of Evil Dead as well. I think now that we’ve had the TV series we can appreciate this more and keep that same open mind with the new film.

I disagree about the addiction metaphor ending when the possession takes place. That's when David's motivation and story arc comes in. David abandoned his sister during what was assumed to be the most difficult times of her live when she had to take care of their sick mother and then turning into heroine to cope, David basically left her "for dead". In the movie when Mia is possessed that is essentially the heroine and her demons taking over her yet again , this time David instead of running away again he decides that "the only way is the hard way" as he says in the film and does everything he can to rescue Mia from her demons. Which he succeeds, sacrificing himself in the process. But at the day the only person that can rescue Mia from her demons is herself, as is the case with most addicts, it's an internal battle that they have to fight with their addiction and that was what the final act of the movie was about, thus the reason why the abomination had Mia's face. It was Mia's demons accumulating into a real personification of Evil. That's why the insults that the abomination threw at Mia where that off "You are going to die here you pathetic junkie". I think that the film did an amazing job of driving the addiction metaphor all the way through to it's conclusion with Mia literally defeating her demons and thus freeing herself from them.

I adore this film. I don't understand why folks have so many issues with it, is it just because there's no splatstick and no Ash? Because this movie is viscerally unnerving in a wonderful way.

That’s why, to me, the extended cut is the true movie. I have always wondered if the first soul was the girl in the beginning bc the purification by fire wasn’t complete when her dad shot her in the head, or if Mia’s counted bc she did die and David brought her back. Who was the true numero uno?

This movie was one of my favorite theater experiences. I saw it in college and you could hear people "ugh-ing" and "ooh-ing." Also, the line "Your little sister is being raped in Hell," got a gasp out of everyone in the theater. I'd love more of this direction for the franchise but understand why fans want more goofy stuff from the OG movies.

Now I'm one of the o.g. fans and I just wanted to not be as bad at keeping character consistency as it was. Like the way the movie shot, David's dealing with a lot of guilt and really not wanting to leave anyone behind, then he puts down and butchers his girlfriend without batting a fucking eye. It's almost like with the issues that they built the character to have that should have bothered him significantly more, and you probably say that he would but there's literally nothing in the movie about that. Or the fact that Eric has literally no reason not to just torch the fucking house himself and tell David to fuck himself rather than trying to talk David into it. Or that there's literally no reason David's girlfriend stays, after the other guy bashes in his girlfriend's head and his sister attempts to shoot him. It's also really stupid than once and she is too scared to hold a knife up to Mia, then magically has the balls to saw her own arm off. The characters in the movie act a lot more like props waiting to die for the next gore scene then actual people dealing with the shit in front of them. I like the original because each of the characters react based on the type of person they are. In the original Ash literally tries to do everything but fight and hurt his friends until he is literally the only one left. Scotty ends up fighting and having to kill his girlfriend and then immediately tries to bail out. Cheryl tries to leave immediately which they got right in this movie because Mia does pretty much the same thing and it comes across better in the remake imo. Linda gets hurt when they initially figure out what's going on, so she doesn't have a chance to really act poorly. I also like the evil a lot better in the old one. The fact that it recognized that Ash didn't want to hurt anybody and actively possessed everyone around him and mocked him for it, was great. That man's world was shattering around him and he had literal demons laughing at him as it was happening. In the remake they forced David to kill his girlfriend and the other character that's not possessed laughs about it in a way that really destroys the tone of the scene. But that's what actually makes Evil Dead scary to me, especially compared to the remake. In the remake, sure it's going to kill you violently. But in the original it's going to have fun with you first, and torture you like a kid ripping the legs off a bug. It wants to break your spirit first, and see exactly how far it can push you before it puts you down. It's like the difference between getting decapitated versus seeing how many holes something and cut into you before you give out. I think it's worse and far more scary.

thank you for this, I've been screaming to the high heavens since 2013 that Evil Dead, in addition to being a great reboot of an established series, is a fucking awesome horror movie that feels fun and scary at the same time.

You used Escape from Hellview, groovy, always happy to see people aware of the underrated CKY. I have a few issues with the 2013’s story, but over all it’s a fun and creative remake, plus it has Jane Levy, she’s such an under actress

I am in the miority of horror fans that are not fans of the "remake". But I am not a true fans of Evild Dead in general. I like the original the most, it has sooooo much charm to it. Dead By Dawn is also very good, but way too slapstikcy for my taste. Army Of Darkness is an impressive ode to oldschool adventorous movies and special effects makers, I appreciated it a lot, but plot/character wise it was bit dull. Evild Dead 2013 is a good movie, no doubts about that, but for me again story wise and character wise it was very boring, I fell a sleep during the finale back in 2013 and almost fall a sleep few times few days ago doing a rewatch :) Also style and esthetic wise it resembles way too much the lat 00s torture porn shockers, I am not a fan of that. I don't mind good gore, don't get me wrong, I just find the looks of that period of time to be pretty ugly :) Cheers!

I think I went in with too high expectations. It's a really well-made movie, and definitely superior to a lot of other horror movies from that time, but it just didn't click for me. I was grossed out, but I didn't feel the uncanny creepiness that the original had.

I was shocked at how good this movie was. I'm a huuge fan of the Evil Dead series, the original was one of the movies that inspired me to become a filmmaker and 2 and 3 were amazingly fun movies. I also love the show Ash vs the Evil Dead. Got the game and also got a prop necronomicon. (Safe to say I like this series). I watched this movie pretty hesitantly because I've been seriously disappointed by remakes but I gave it a shot to try and be fair. Holt shit, way better than it needed to be, it's simple but I love it for that. I know its technically not a remake, but I'll have to say this is the best horror remake. Sad to see where the directors went afterwards though. Hated Don't Breathe and never bothered with their Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie

This is such a great movie, and the fact that people appreciate it so much more now makes me happy but also pisses me off. Because where were y’all 10 years ago??? This franchise could’ve turned out so different and we could’ve gotten an actual sequel if fans hadn’t been so pissy back then. I think it’s utter bullshit that Fede didn’t get brought back to make another Evil Dead. I think his direction and script were phenomenal and he should’ve come back to either make a new one, or a sequel. Rise was good, but imo this is still the strongest Evil Dead next to the original.

This remake was good and I still love it more then Evil Dead Rise but Rise was still really good. That being said I think there’s something that the next movie should do. They need to take the stylistic elements of the remake and Rise (the design of the deadites, the eye color, the rotting flesh and black goo) and the pure horror of the them, and combine it with the wacky nature of Evil Dead 2. I see it in my head and I know it would work. The kills and the body horror need to be cranked up to 20 but also done in a funny way. They also need to give the deadites more personality. Make them funnier. But also, the first two Evil Dead films had more then just possessions. The environment would move, inanimate objects would scream or laugh (think Evil Dead 2) that needs to be incorporated into the next film but modernize it. It can be done. I think, I hope, I will be done.

It might be an unpopular opinion, but this has recently taken over as my favorite Evil Dead movie. I did not like it the first time I saw it, but after re-watching 10 years later, I really loved it. All of the Evil Dead movies are top notch. I wish more horror franchises were this dependable.

I read the full script before the movie released. Something that was changed in the movie which really dissappointed me was the scene of the rise of the abomination. The abomination was written as an amalgamation of all the dead characters stuck together. I assume they just couldn't create it without usung CGI.
