Smart bulbs and automated blinds can bring value to every home, but to do that, these products need to be as easy to buy and set up as regular bulbs and blinds. They need to be easy enough to just discover in the regular aisles like every other product, easy enough to buy without needing an expert or being one.
Matter changes the game -- by making devices easier to set up, in the same way, every time, and work with other smart products in the home. Matter-enabled devices are secure by nature and provide the reliability and features expected while doing so much more. They can be controlled by whichever app, voice assistant, or device is the most convenient, and by anyone in the home.
Matter also lets developers build literally, once, and for all. It’s a common language for today’s smart devices that lets them talk to each other, enabling simple, yet powerful experiences for consumers. Matter is also local, so home devices can be controlled securely, without the need for a cloud connection.
For anyone who wants a smart device that just works, for anyone with the next great idea to easily launch a global product. Matter is for all of us, for all brands and platforms, all over the world.
That’s what matters.

This is an evolutionary moment for humanity seeing all of these companies finally coming together to work on such a local open standard. The challenges and barriers of everyone trying to do it on their own has been known for 20 years.... however they all did it anyway (cloud hosted services shut down when companies go bankrupt, latency of all actions, privacy concerns, internet outages, compatibility between products and vendors). I'm very happy to see the worlds connected products companies coming together to try to make these recurring issues become a part of history. 😁

Definitely a slick (single take!) video, but feels a bit information dense for general consumers, and with an odd lack of actually showing the mentioned product setup simplifications and ease of control across a range of devices in action. This is a _huge_ positive shift in the industry, and it would be far more compelling to show rather than tell for it to click for the less technically inclined, IMHO...just my 2 cents!

@nirajs

@@rtm135 I guess it felt like it was not technical enough for developers that will use Matter, and talked too much about development despite the first couple of minutes being focused on the general consumer shopping and home experiences (consumption-side). The whole thing felt a bit muddled in messaging when each audience would benefit from something more focused to them. But maybe this was supposed to just be a general high-level overview covering both 🤷‍♂️

Impressive presentation, but the most interesting part is what happens to legacy devices. And for some strange reason I wasn't able to find any information about those cheap Tuya devices and if they will be updated to Matter. Would be great if those cheap devices could work without their rather unstable servers. No matter what happens to the old stuff, at least the future will be a lot easier to configure. And that's great in it's own right. ;)

Yes! Companies like this will explode right now. Human interface platforms that are universal. Mostly a first come market. Also, all on the higher market. Sort of a places in-between space. like a company that sells the designs the best form of screws kind of thing. There need to be long term patent designs to ensure viability with competitors.

@@resrudeboy This currently correct - however there is hope for Google in the coming months. They have promised new features in their upcoming redesign of the Home app that makes a compelling argument. Currently it's vaporware, but there is reason to be optimistic. However, to answer your original question, I recommend that you purchase at least one device (like a Nest Hub 2nd Gen) that is Thread enabled and can act as a border router. it will make future purchases easier, knowing that your network can support Thread devices.

@@resrudeboy Alexa can’t save a song from Spotify or Apple Music into my playlist. I have premium subscription for both of this music services. That’s not a “leader in AI” in my opinion. I don’t care if it’s Amazon fault or not, but me as a consumer I don’t care. I just switched to Apple HomePod

Shouldn't be an issue. It's an open source development based on earlier open source solutions such as ZigBee and thread. Nobody is making significant money from the protocol itself. The value comes from the expanding market of people now able to make use of technology that was too complex for them previously. Has it got a matter logo? Then it works with every other system that has a matter logo.
