Kilian, thanks for posting this, it absolutely made my day. I soloed the Matterhorn as a young man and walked the ridge up to the metal cross, just as you did. I’m now an old guy recovering from cancer surgery but you took me back. Thanks, mate.

Fisheye lenses are such amazing visual exaggerators. Despite knowing that, it's like a good optical illusion. You can't help but to feel that those angle are as the fisheye shows them, and that makes me squirm in my seat watching this.

So easy calling someone on the internet a noob these times. Watch that easy terrain again. I reckon you're not a climber by a mile. It is highly unresponsible to run on a ridge at 4,500 meters. And yes, very likely he's roped with someone behind.

Because the extreme sports junkies don't connect to nature the way that explorers and climbers of the past did. They regard the mountains as a child would a piece of playground equipment. Since there is no reverence in their souls, their music is irreverent as well. Add the commercial influence of TNF, Patagonia, GoPro, etc. and you get this schizophrenic, fast cut, disjointed sensibility designed to appeal to Yuppies and children of same for the money they will spend on products.

Amazing balance, agility and confidence !! I understand if one were to attempt this "roped off" with a professional guide, if the client falls one way, the guide jumps off the other side to act as a counter weight so they both don't tumble down one side. I suppose one falls into Italy, the other into Switzerland. I'm not quite sure what happens after that, or how the guide rescues himself and the client. Maybe they remain in place and the guide radio's Air Zermatt rescue for a helicopter retrieval.
@WhiteWizard44
@WhiteWizard44 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, of course! I did not mean to imply there would be a conditional rescue, merely that the "Horn" is on the border of two countries, and I believe the summit spine runs parallel, so one side falls to each. I think the snowy side (left) is Italy as the more rugged side less apt to hold snow faces Zermatt and Switzerland...
@vkoptchev
@vkoptchev 6 жыл бұрын
When they both stop the fall the guide should be able to anchor the rope and then help the other climber up if he is unable to ascend by himself.
@WhiteWizard44
@WhiteWizard44 6 жыл бұрын
Sounds as good a plan as any, I suppose. With the rate extreme sports are going, I wonder how much longer it will be before someone RUNS the ridge to the cross in a wingsuit with skis strapped to their back. Then straps on the skis and drops down the left side until they either run out of terrain or become airborne, at which point they eject the skis, spread out the wingsuit and perform a landing in the valley without a parachute by gliding into either water or a half mile runway of haybales!!
