I found it interesting that you pointed out that Mattermost looks a lot like Slack, somehow intimating that Mattermost might be a copy of Slack. Mattermost was released in 2011, Slack was released in 2014. It would be very interesting if the creators of Mattermost were somehow inspired by a tool that didn't even exist yet. I think emoji's or custom emoji's is the least you need. If you run a professional business, emoji's not being used much. Functionality is much more important, I will keep watching until the end now. Hopefully, Mattermost offers something useful for me. So far it looks like a chat client with channel options such as Discord.

Slightly disagree about emojis - while not in the first plan we relied heavily on emojis during our use of Slack. I remember there were some custom, animated ones... One spelled "Thank you" and "Done" which were used the most especially on messages of people who reported an issue, request... Other ones that were used a lot were red X, green checkmark, green/red dots similar to the ones found on Jenkins
