All early minis were positive earth. Looks like you will need to cut the main battery cable in half to incorporate the floor solonoid and also extend the front section to the starter.

There should be a large soft rubber grommet that the loom goes through when it goes from the engine bay to under the parcel shelf, under the speedo. It has a large hole in the middle for the loom. I'm putting a new loom into my MK2 Cooper S at the moment. I noticed that the grommet has a large hole in the middle for the loom but it also looks like there should be two small holes to one side for the windscreen washer pipes. When took it apart and removed the loom, mine had only one of the two windscreen washer pipes going through its own hole, the other pipe went through the big hole along with the loom. The grommet has two round marks moulded into it where the two small holes should be pierced through. Only one had been pierced on mine. I suspect that they often didn't bother with putting the pipes through seperate holes in the factory. However, doing it properly means that there would be a better seal around everything and also there is probably less chance of the washer pipes getting constricted. I'll punch the extra hole and re-install my new loom and pipes correctly.

my 61 mini had the floor button start the battery lead went from the battery to the floor button switch then from the switch to the starter the floor button basically acts as the solenoid like in later cars they still had a ignition switch in the dash to supply power to the rest of the car mine was a australian 61 mini

Chilli Con Carne here this evening. Rather good too. An alternator has to be negative earth. And yes the two Brown wires connect to the battery side of the push button. Other side goes to starter. One Brown wire goes to feed position 1 on the fuse box with two purple wires opposite (horn and interior light) The other as you say goes direct to the alternator. Check if the loom is wired for a hazard light switch, light and relay. This is fed from a smaller Brown wire connected with the large Brown at the fuse box position 1 and goes back into the loom and goes to the switch panel. Does it have the old 'finger pump' washer system or an electric one? If so the feed (Black wire + Black / Light Green wire) comes out near the plugs for the indicator relay / hazard relay (if any) and the connections for the rear loom. Should be two holes in the bulkead for the self tappers to locate the washer bottle bracket. Old ones were by the voltage regulator on the RH inner wing panel I stand to be corrected but as I recall there was no large rubber grommet where the loom went under the speedo housing. should have been. There wasn't one on my '78 1000 with the large 3 gauge binnacle either and I know that was original. Make one up? Or fit a bulkhead sound proof pad and close the pad round the loom? An old trick we used to use on the rally escorts which had huge looms was to warm them up before fitting and they moulded more easily where you wanted them and then cooled into place.

If i remember rightly (not very often) it was that white putty they put round the window winders that was used on the speedo and loom

Same stuff they put round the larger 3 gauge binnacle used on later Coopers and 1000s where it screws to the interior side of the bulkhead (or screws into the original speedo cowling on early models) so they did at least try!

Matt, i presume that is a Autosparks originated loom? I've just been looking at my old loom, any grommets around you new loom??
@MattGreenWorks4 жыл бұрын
Don’t think so. Mk1 never had a big grommet

@@MattGreenWorks I've laid my 62 loom out along the floor trying to figure it all out. I've 2 grommets on it. The one looks like it goes into a large hole on the dash below the speedo. Those wire's supply the ignition switch, dip beam switch and steering colume. The other is around thick wire which goes through the bulkhead to the floor starter button.
