Fighter jets are made to takeoff, fight, and land, so when we needed to get the L-39 to Vegas, range is always a top concern. L-39 Part 11.

This channel has unfortunately become little more than click bait and a very poor example for general aviation. The unfortunate part is that those watching this who are looking to an aviation career or just get into general aviation may not realize how ridiculous and unsafe much of this is all to generate clicks on his website. Instead of mocking the Air Traffic Controllers for his lack of planning, perhaps he should do a video sitting next to one so he can better understand their responsibility in the bigger picture of keeping everyone in the airspace they control safe. When he bought the jet, it's too bad he didn't let them keep the primidone attitude that obviously came with it.

Why do you hate ATC so much? They are doing their jobs and have no clue that you fly an aircraft with limited fuel range. You say "unable" but do not give a reason and then you chuckle as though you did it intentionally. This creates congestion on the frequency because now she has to ask questions. In many of your videos you criticize the controllers for doing their job. You have no clue what they have going on.

Me: Wow these guys are so unlucky always running up against weather and fuel problems! Matt @ 17:12 : "That's my bad I didn't plan it" Me: Oh yeah, right Seriously, I don't know what kind of pilot sets off on an IFR flight like this assuming that ATC isn't gonna need to vector them or have them change altitude at all and basically not having enough fuel to do anything other than their original planned flight? Seems like they knew they messed up when the controller assumed that they couldn't descend because of weather (even though the controller wasn't aware of any weather in their way) and they didn't want to tell the controller that it was actually because of fuel planning problems.

I said “that’s my bad, I did the planning” because we were initially burning more fuel than we thought we were, so after that we did have to work with ATC to stay higher instead of their normal turboprop descent profile from the 20s, which clearly didn’t impact any operations, it’s just nonstandard.

L-39 aircraft can be equipped with 4 external tanks which increases the range. Most of us flying jets have fuel usage issues when we try and stretch the trip. The proper thing to do is to flight plan a route that gives us an out to a closer airport such that we can land and fuel up without creating an issue for ATC. Many times we have flown into Houston where the controller want us at a low altitude 45 miles from the airport, you just have to plan for it.

The entry into Vegas seemed like a non event; however the decision to fly back to Alpine at night seems to have been a poor call - saved by a prudent divert (I would assume/hope that was an overnight in Salt Lake)…. Day VMC is probably a good rule of thumb in one of these, especially in the Rockies! Gotta say it was a bit tough to listen to the comm/chuckling from the back seater - good rule of thumb is to comment only to provide added situational awareness and keep your mouth shut when controllers are talking.

Just a thought . . . Why not visit an Air Guard or AFRES fighter unit and speak to the commander about joining the unit as a pilot. You’d need a vision waiver but, if the unit wants you, you’d be guaranteed Undergraduate Pilot Training where you’d have every reason to expect an outstanding learning opportunity and a successful outcome. Afterwards, you could combine your military service with your civilian flying while earning healthcare and retirement benefits - like I said just a thought. 💭

I don't think he wants to go through 3 years of training especially at this point having a jet, and I wouldnt blame him. I would say he should reach out to a unit for some mentoring from those pilots though!

Decent advice - though a guy that laughs through a Class B controller's frustration due to poor fuel management would unlikely do well in UPT.

Loved flying that whole area around KLAS. Fond memories of KVGT, KHND, Lake Havasu, and around AZ and UT. Awesome.

You departed from where to Vegas? And why won't they let you climb to say 30-32K instead of dropping low so you can maintain fuel efficiency?

@@tylerkleine9800 I'm not a pilot so excuse my question, but you have to file in advance a flight plan to be allowed to go to that altitude? ATC can't approve mid flight? Just seems weird like how are you supposed to know what other traffic around you is flying at.
