Seeing their thoughts is such a powerful image. I suddenly remembered this passage from 1 Samuel 16: But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”

In Scandinavian, slavic and Vedic languages the word to know comes from the perfect form of the word to see. The same is in Greek. You know the Sanskrit ”Veda” - knowledge, it is the same root. In Ancient Greek the initial ”w” dropped, while in other languages it turned into “v”. So it is used here just to denote the knowing, not seing.
