I love how Matthew says that losing a girlfriend might have happened to Ian Tyson. No, he adds, he was probably the guy stealing the girl :)

Cover versions aren't always a pleasure, but this one is absolutely stunning! Wish that Jill Barber would lend her amazing voice to this kind of music a bit more often...

My now husband and I saw Buffy in 1969 as students, long before marriage. Few in the audience; we got to stay for the 2nd performance, too, and were about the only ones in the audience. We loved her voice, piano playing, guitar playing, stage presence, her songwriting and her musically delivered message. We have always sung together, met as performers in musical groups. This is BUFFY'S song. Nobody sings it like she does, nor should they try to imitate artists' uniqueness.

17 references the card game but for myself it has double meaning. I turned 17 years of age in 1971 and worked construction in McKenzie BC. The song is so reflecting of those times. Nice job in this production.

quite the splendid cover however they neglected to do the little know 4th verse ( see tony rice and/or david bromberg's cover on you tube) ... 'she's a lady so fine i best never try to find her cause good memories are all that we shared, and they should never be changed cause they're all i can take with me since i gambled and lost my summer wages' and it's that verse that completes the song so well..

Nice version, I've been listening to various versions but David Bromberg is the one who really nailed it. The spoken introduction here really does no justice to the song which is way more tragic.

interesting introduction... about working in the bush, cutting trees, etc. I wonder what part of the lyrics he doesn't understand? ---- "I'm going to work on them towboats With my slippery city shoes Lord I swore I would never do that again Through the great fog bound straights" --- Towboats, things that float up and down waterways
@1965DPJ7 жыл бұрын
I think the lyrics refer to towboats that ferry logs to the sawmills.

Summer wages, it is you that do not understand . . . . . . . . "Things that float up and down waterways," are you kidding, where are you from ? .

too much yakking before performing. Go to 2:15 to avoid what you don't care about. Good harmony performance after that, though. Out of curiosity, I'd love to hear Matthew sing some verses, solo, with Jill joining in for the chorus parts.
@jimking22996 жыл бұрын
The yakking explains what the song's about for people who aren't familiar with the song or the subject matter. Could have done without all the personal details, but I was OK with it. Lots of time on my hands, I guess.

Ian Tyson did not write this song, he stole it from a BC Logger named Larry Click. Larry had the opportunity to play it for Tyson without first copyrighting it and Tyson stole it as his own. How do I know this? I am an old BC Logger who has worked with Larry Click
