I'm also in the spectrum, and now it makes sense why it's so hard to understand anything abstract: concept of eternal life, parables, idioms, jokes etc. This series help me visualize and now beginning to understand things I've heard from church since I was a kid. I've never cried this hard before! Praise the only living Savior.

Matthew is so relatable to me it's not even funny... I'm on the autism spectrum and I see a lot of myself in him. I know what it's like to feel like an outcast within a peer group. The scene in season 2, where Matthew is talking to Phillip and he draws a circle on the ground and says that it represents everyone else that he knows and then draws a dot outside the circle and says that the dot it him, symbolizing how lonely and isolated he feels from not only the other disciples, but also the rest of the world... I felt that. That is literally the story of my life.

My brother has autism and knows that feeling too well, and sometimes I feel bad about how many friends I have and he hardly has any and he is always getting angry at the ones he has for not spending time with him and understanding him. I wish I could do so much more for him but he is so full of hate and seems to be turning away from God, not believing anyone loves him. Please pray for him. It feels wierd asking for prayers from strangers but I guess sometimes its neede and I see a lot of other people doing it so I would really appreciate the extra prayers for my family.😊❤😪

Honestly I didn’t notice he was supposed to be portrayed as autistic. Especially given that I bet if anyone from modern day was forced to live in a chaotic ancient world and learn to live off the land with no previous experience with a bunch of people who don’t like you, we’d all be as anxious and out of touch as Matthew and just as desperate for something to make sense. And this not even including Matthew’s world view being shaken after having seen literal acts of God. My heart kinda goes out to him. Or maybe I’m secretly autistic but have currently learned to live with it so I don’t notice it or just mistook it for general social awkwardness

Matthew is not a "disaster", and I find it offensive to make fun of people with autism, which Matthew (and Thomas) depicts. All my life being on the autistic spectrum I have been "odd", "creepy", "funny", "queer" (back when that word meant something different), laughed at, mocked, ridiculed and shunned. We should instead all follow the example of Jesus and Philip in this series (and later of Mary, Peter and Gaius) and welcome our brothers and sisters on the autistic spectrum, not treat them as goofy outcasts.

Many people aren't educated about neurodivergence and don't recognize ASD in the portrayal of Matthew. As someone with autism you may be picking up on things that I wouldn't (I'm ND, but not ASD), but in my observation while many of the scenes involving friction between Matthew and the others are played up for humor, that humor is often derived from how that other person needs to learn something from the interaction. He'll often state something that is completely logical, that the other characters are failing to see because they're operating under assumptions (and/or prejudice) that are preventing them from seeing things as they really are. EDIT: I didn't pick that up about Thomas so going to have to pay closer attention in a rewatch!
