Never would of thought in a thousand years that I would utter the words " I enjoy ballet", well at least this interpretation. Matthew Bournes stunning choreography has really put me on to this beautiful interpretation of dance and ballet. Please enjoy this clip from "Swan Lake"

I first saw the full length Matthew Bourne's "swan lake" online by accident about 2 years ago, but it was just so stunning. Not only the choreography, but the emotions as well. I've never thought I could appreciate the classical type of dance, or just dance in general, but it has opened a whole world for me now that I love art more. I started to do ballet. Wish I saw it earlier.

The idea of a male swan makes complete sense to me. The strength, the beauty, the enormous wingspan of these creatures suggests to the musculature of a male dancer more readily than a ballerina in her white tutu.......

Yes, the idea was to show the other side of swans - the aggressive, powerful side. Swans are after all quite nasty creatures!

Fleur Laser, ust admit you're homophobic already. The original Swan Lake already contains sexual and romantic themes between heterosexuals. Why is it bad if it's between men?
@Juli-ig1se
@Juli-ig1se 5 жыл бұрын
There have been a lot of ballett performances played only by women in the past and a lot of performances played only by men. There have been times in the past when women weren't allowed to play roles in theatre or something common, so all the roles where played by men. It's not a big deal but people are just dumb. You can interpret it how you want to. If people want to think that it is gay, then it can be gay. But you can also interpret it as heterosexuell. But people shouldn't have problems with things THEY interpret by themselves :D if they have a problem with it they should interpret it otherwise, it's their choice :D
@johannaspencer9877

The original story of odette transforming between human and swan is more sexualised than bourne’s version. His swans are just that, and to me feel more realistic in representation to real swans who although graceful and pretty are also vicious when they want to be.

The Art of Dance is a discipline, yet it is still ever changing and expanding. Art in and of itself is meant to provoke thought, discourse, open minds and hearts to the possibility of more than the reality one currently lives in, to challenge thought and promote change in society. This work does this and so much more. As a dancer it makes my heart soar. As a human it brings joy to my soul.

Most of this brilliant interpretation is serious and, so to speak, straight. This first scene is close to a parody of the familiar one in which four female cygnets dance prissily connected with crossed arms. Bourne says swans are powerful animals and this is more the way actual young swans act--macho.

Because Billy Elliot who has grown up to become a professional dancer is shown appearing in Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake. Which is a deliberately very masculine take on a traditional ballet, and therefore very story-appropriate.

If you take bits in isolation like that then yes, I can see why people would think it’s gay, but to me it was more like the Prince was rejecting having a girlfriend and although it’s implied in act 2 that the one he really wants is a male stranger, to me it was more that he didn’t want to be human. Life as a swan was much more appealing to him. So his love for the swan was not so much a romantic one but one of longing to be the same. Without the weight of a kingdom or the shame and disregard from his mother.
@kittona8754

So what if it's gay? Gay doesn't necessarily mean not masculine, there are as many ways to gay as there are to be hetero and as a woman I have no problem with any of them, all I care about is whether you're an arsehole or not, and who you love and who you fuck has nothing to do with that. Also: this is the greatest thing I've ever seen. I fricken LOVE it.
