Fun fact - in Mexico, a lot of actors do use an earpiece but it's usually with a telenovela. The reason is, a lot of times, these shows are being filmed when they're already airing earlier episodes, and they have a much more limited budget, so there's not a lot of room for retakes. So by having the earpiece, they're able to get their lines on the 1st take and move on right away. I just wanted to put it out there because here, they're like "OMG, how lazy!" But depending on the situation, it's necessary 😊 okay, I'm done. Please carry on

As to his particularly off-putting use in a film set of earpieces or of cue cards taped to a fellow actor’s torso area, he once famously and unapologetically stated that he is paid to act, not to memorize lines. I also like Broderick’s take on it, made that more meaningfully authentic by him working on The Freshman with Brando. Hey, use all the actor’s tools and tricks you know to make a dialogue-rich scene work, but the actor still has to engage cognisantly and organically with the lines delivered via an earpiece or read via cue cards. It is actually more challenging and entails more split-second decisions to deliver an artfully nuanced ‘natural’ performance,. It is more work... on top of touching upon all the other elements of acting one must grapple and contend with (for example, re-acting with fellow actors in the scene, elucidation, voice, facial and body movements, etc). It is a most difficult and demanding (and, at times , probably exasperating to the actors and crew) approach to screen-acting and it is just bonkers to pull it off successfully, unless your name, however, is Marlon Brando. And we must remember that he spent close to 8 yrs on the NY stage doing phenomenal work acting in play after play (sometimes repertory) before he made his first film in the early 50s. He did not resort to cue cards or earpieces on the stage.
