Nice reaction. The album this song comes off of, "Beautiful Midnight" is an intense downer, written by a man whose bi-polar condition was not yet diagnosed, and songs that blend personal struggles with late 90s era social commentary. It gets really bleak by the end, and has been a constant source of inspiration for me.

Matthew Good Band, great choice for a reaction! A hallmark of Canadian alternative rock in the 90s. I recommend their songs Indestructible and Jenni’s Song.

an interview came up on my youtube feed with Raine Maida of Our Lady Peace and Mathew Good and of Mathew Good band and later just Mathew Good of his solo Career. Good was talking about how he was diagnosed in , which would be after the song was put out, with being Diagnosed with Bi polar with symptoms involving of dysmorphic mania also called Mixed mainia. Where he described it: "It's basically like having mania and epression at the same time... times a hundred." he also said that "I can now add up all those days in my life that that sypmtomolgy existed and it makes sense." After I heard that interviewed I was sort of wondering if that symptomology not the dianosis but the feeling played into the writing of the song

The whole album is incredible. Its a sleeper. I can listen to it front to back all time. A Boy and His Machine Gun is about Columbine. Failing the Rorschach Test, Running For Home, Giant, Strange Days plus plus plus. Its incredible.

"A Boy and His Machine Gun" was actually written BEFORE Columbine happened. The timing of Columbine (April 1999) and the song title showing up on the album (released Sept 1999) makes people think it's about Columbine. But it's about a boy in a mental institution.

Their song Load me up pulled me in, but my favorites on that album were apparitions and deep six... This album is one of very few that came with me when I moved states . It still gets heavy rotation in my playlist.. the second album was really good too.

I cant decide if it is my imagination but:the video you are watching sounds a bit distorted in places it shouldn't be. It sounds just slightly off in some places. This song has a lot of nostalgia wrapped up with it. when it first came out in the 90s the song seemed to be everywhere in canada. This song is different than the other songs i know by Matthew Good (band).

It came out in 1999. So the song kind of predated the stuff from the mid 2000s. I remember reading some where that it was a song that was written pretty quickly. You foccused a lot more on the devil than i have in my interpretation of the song. The click click click do do do of the instrumentation kinda sets me in the mind to think that the person is a ticking time bomb. They are dissatisfied with their life working a crappy night shift and sort of get the picture they feel like they dont have the best experiences in relationships and they are either going to explode or turn the shitty into gold.

Personally, I think the song was written to celebrate the new millennium. Either way, the guitar sounds in the middle we’re awesome.
