I wouldn't say they're underrated. Most people into this kind of music know and enjoy PTH. It's also worth mentioning they never really did a good job of growing their sound, which kinda forced them to lose traction. Old PTH like this is still my favorite from them. Probably played this album over a hundred times lol

My first metal show it was btbam, in flames, protest the hero, and kill switch. When protest was playing there was a group of people trying to clap along and Rody stopped to acknowledge their efforts but then asked them to stop because they were so off time. I'm a very experienced prog music listener and their style is just always too "chaotic" for my taste. I listened through the entirety of Palimpsest and while there were neat parts I just felt like it was stimulation overload the whole time. I find that I appreciate music with some space here and there. I keep trying these guys out because I hear great things, but... Maybe it's just a matter of not matching my preference in sound.

@@dansourile5444 I hear you on that, though I tend towards harder prog/math core like PTH, DEP, BTBAM. A lot of these style of bands just always keep the dial at 11 the whole time or are so all over the place within one song that I can't find an identity for a particular track. Often there's simply no space or groove in the song. And personally, I need some groove and space to really enjoy the journey of a track. For me, this song has just enough groove and cyclical sound structure that I'm totally on board with it.

Long time Protest fan, some fun facts: -When they wrote Kezia (first major-label album), they wrote the music before they could actually play it; they had to learn how to play that fast. They were under 18 at the time. -The bassist from this song (Arif), left the band after their 4th album (Volition) to compose for theatre and pursue other musical endeavors, he was the primary lyricist until this album as well. -They publish all their own sheet music and guitar tabs under their own publishing company, Sheet Happens

Kezia is THE most perfect album ever. 15 some years later it still blows my mind that a bunch of 16 year olds wrote and performed such a front to back masterpiece. A lot of their later work becomes a little out there and hit or miss, but Kezia and Fortress are both front to back nothing but solid gold.

Same opinion. Through out high school these 2 albums truly set the stage for what was possible for writing music. Obviously the guitar is so next level and the vocals are truly unique but the bass lines are what sent this band through the stratosphere for me. Really got me 2 hand tapping on the regular and co writing shared riffs as a bass player.

Their new album is a masterpiece (something I never thought I’d say about a band I’ve been listening to for like 15 years, there’s usually a drop off in quality, or nostalgia is too strong for the old stuff), any song from that is worth reacting to. Highly rec From the Sky or The Fireside. Scurrilous always gets over looked and it’s amazing, Hair-Trigger is my rec from that.

Fun fact, the PTH lads weren't old enough to sign their first record deal. I grew up in the region they're from, I'd highly recommend their very early work. They had to get permission from their school to film their first music video and had to get permission to play in venues that sold alcohol. Their dedication to their is world class.

I was so obsessed with their first 3 releases, the Calculated Use of Sound EP, Kezia, and the album this is from Fortress. Kinda lost touch with them after that, my tastes changed a bit, life happened etc. but I’ve been revisiting those albums and have been loving the nostalgia. But man, Fortress was so good, that album was around the time I first found Mastodon, Baroness, other bands and that whole time period in my life was such a wild period for me as I expanded my guitar playing and listening “abilities”. Kezia will always hold a special place in my heart but I can acknowledge just how improved their songwriting was by Fortress.
