In looking at art history I feel philosophy and psychology play a part. Since our philosophies say a lot about who we are. Art history looks both into the minds of the artist and what the artist believed about the culture of the time

After watching this and other segments in this series, I came across a review of Kay Larson's autobiography of the great American composer, John Cage, "Where The Heart Beats", in which she explores the way in which his practice of Zen Buddhism, arguably a form of applied epistemology, radically changed his entire understanding of reality and, consequently, his practice of his art: music composition. That's a pretty dramatic example of the interaction between epistemology and art, IMHO.

Please someone discuss the statements below Art - interpret appreciate and enjoy the meaning aspect of fact - limited the authentic qualities of experience - inclusive - beauty is actually treated - enjoys and appreciates expresses and creates - primary endeavor is the actual expression of beauty - free from his consciousness in his interpretation

VERY good discussion! Yes, Art History is a vital window on what is happening on the creative culture of other, and former, peoples. As I have said in comments on another of these videos I turned very early to Art History in seeking to understand what was happening in the functions of "Art" because I was trying to unearth the conceptual foundations one sees in the representations themselves. But in the midst of these there are true gems. We are told that Duccio happens across a young shepherd boy drawing images of his sheep in the dirt with a stick, and thus is discovered Giotto, whom all the Renaissance painters revered as the veritable founder of their craft. Part of what marks off the revelations in Art History is the people who transcend their culture, as Giotto did, to create new space within which the winds of creation may blow.

Facinating stuff.. Mr Milliner is the kindly gentleman we would both WANT and secretly resent having as a chaperone when we visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art With Friends.. Maybe I should stop talking about Salvador Dali.. Peace.

History is order of events that came before other events. So it's more easy to understand philosophy of times if we know when something first appeared. Most interesting and thought provocative art was destroyed or is kept hidden in some private collections. This is why i don't like Hegel, he probably thought some great ideas came from nowhere.

GREAT topic! ...Ummm, "the Greeks had no word for it so we're deceiving ourselves if...."??? EVERYTHING a human perceives is 'art', because it is perceived & interpreted, as well it should be. It is not required to carry that particular label.

I'm sorry, did he just say art as a discipline was developed in Europe? That could not be further from the truth. Multiple disciplinary schools of artistic forms developed independently across continents. Whether you take the water color ink paintings of East Asia, or the geometric and scientific architecture of Mesoamerica.

I think he meant art as a discipline of study. So, the discipline of studying art and its history, I think? Doubt he meant art, in general, is European lol
