Back in 2013, Matthew Perry went head-to-head with Peter Hitchens on the BBC about whether or not addiction is a disease. It’s fascinating to see.
At The Edge Treatment Center, we’re less interested in debates and more interested in helping people stay in recovery. If you’re struggling with addiction, you’re not alone. Just reach out today at 844-590-0403 to get started.

“Staying” sober is a coping mechanism that can fail at any time. Overcoming alcohol or any other “addiction” is for life.

@@TheEdgeTreatmentCenter, I May be misunderstanding you, or you are misunderstanding me. I thinking “coping” strategies are bumpkis. Addiction is a powerful lie that we have believed. We aren’t addicts we are weak. We need the power of the Holy Spirit given to us by God for this very reason. I agree that overcoming anything is hard but it isn’t impossible.

I think it matters because pretending like an addiction is a choice, which I feel like is the point he’s effectively making, is just so misinformed, and if this view is perpetuated into law, the we wouldn’t view it as an illness, but rather as a “weak person” and that’s a problem.

Thank you for sharing your perspective. Recognizing addiction as an illness rather than a choice is crucial for fostering understanding and compassion. It's vital to continue advocating for awareness and informed viewpoints.

It’s a choice. I drank everyday for years. Loved it and enjoyed every minute of it. I looked forward to it everyday. Got some bloodwork done and the doctor told me I had liver damage. I stopped right then and haven’t drank since.

When you realize you are not caught in a mechanistic cascade of events beyond your control you actually gain total control. When you tempt people with a ledge rather than explaining the truth that they could drink alcohol responsibly if they so chose you deminish the dehumanizing feelings they have and empower them with reality.

I think addiction is not a choice in the sense that somebody choses to be addicted. But they did choose at some point to take the substance that later on made them addicts. In the same way a person that was once* a drug addict chooses to not consume the substance anymore. In that sense it is a choice of consuming vs. not consuming. But that does not mean that it is easy to stop the cravings and that it does not need intensive therapy and long term psychological help. Most addiction programs don't work because they are too short and superficial. The addict needs to really understand why they are addicted, what they are trying to achieve and what pain they are trying to avoid. This can take years and relapses are common, but the help and support should not stop. Relapses should be expected and the family, therapists and support people should expect them and still continue to help the addict get rid of the addiction. If the addict really thinks they have no choice whatsoever, then they won't be able to stop the addiction, because since they have no choice, what can they do about it? Nothing.

Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful perspective on addiction. You’re absolutely right that addiction is a complex issue that goes far beyond simply choosing to consume or not consume a substance. It requires deep understanding, long-term therapy, and ongoing support, especially when relapses occur. Recognizing that recovery is a journey filled with challenges, but also opportunities for growth, is crucial. If you or someone you know needs support or more information, please call us at (844) 590-0403.

Fear was never the proper emotion, it fails far harder than any other method through natural means. Destructive people can make mole hills seem like the worst nightmare possible to most normal people. Accountability, adherence to morals, & integrity should be apart of everyone's core character. If there is no self control, then don't start, simple choice. If you can't fight peer pressure, never let yourself be there in the first place, go somewhere else. Get friends & family involved, don't fight this alone!!! Go do research on rehab centers & find one for you!!! Be accountable to yourself at the very least!!! Have some self-respect!!!! Coming from a former addict, fight the inner fight for peace, settle the emotions you don't want to face, it's okay to not feel the pain of the past. You aren't disrespecting your side! Who are we to expect you to live miserably for your cause? Aren't you a fighter for peace? You can't lead someone to somewhere you can't go. Good Luck!!!!!

If your only able to choose having another drink (or whatever) in what sense is it a choice?
@TheEdgeTreatmentCenter
@TheEdgeTreatmentCenter 7 ай бұрын
That's a profound question. When substance use becomes a compulsion rather than a choice, it underscores the complexity of addiction. It highlights the need for understanding, support, and treatment to navigate those challenges. Recognizing this can shift how we approach recovery and support for those struggling.
