1 year later, this has aged like fine wine. Hanifin has 43 pts in 75 games and is a top pairing 2 way dman. Kylington is a top 4 dman with 29 pts in 67 games in his first full season with strong defensive metrics Lindholm is getting Selke discussions and has 39 goals and 78 pts in 76 games. Flames now have a 27 year old 1C and 25 year old 1D and top 4 D from this trade tree, and all three are only getting better.

Can’t believe Lindholm ended up being this good. I always thought Hanifin was the player that we were getting in that deal that would be the best player. Lindholm being a 40 goal scorer and one of the best defensive forwards in the league is something that was completely unexpected to me.

The Canadiens have made great trades over the years (this one, the danault one, even trading plekanec for a 2nd then signing him again was a good trade) but everyone just remembers the Gomez one or the Drouin one (which at the time didn’t seem too bad)

Boston COULD have had Konecny, Boeser Barzal, Connor, Chabot, Aho, Larsson, or Samsonov at that 15th pick. So the flames dodged a bit of the bullet there, but to Bruins fans, you could have had three of any of them with those three straight 2015 first rounders.
@sopowerabboy

Aho and Boeser wasn't highly rated. Samsonov is probably due to the Russian factor (along with the fact goalie dont usually get drafted in 1st round) but other than that yeah they screw up, Chabot/Barzal/Connor/Konecny were among the best player available when it came for the Bruins to announced their 3 picks.

One trade tree that seemed to peak a little interest for me: Dale Hawerchuk from Winnipeg to Buffalo in 1990. I think that tree lasted until 2016 (even after the original Jets franchise moved to Arizona in 1996) on the Jets/Coyotes side of the tree. The trade was: Dale Hawerchuk + WPG's 1st round pick in 1990 (which became Brad May) to Buffalo for Phil Housley, Scott Arniel, Jeff Parker, and BUF's 1st round pick in 1990 (which became Keith Tkachuk).

He was 1 year away from UFA and he didn't want to sign the 10 year $60 million dollar extension with the Pens, so they traded him with 1 year left to the Canes. Where he signed the same contract. Calgary was going to lose Fox as they had drafted him almost 2 drafts earlier and he told Calgary multiple times he was not going to sign. So much like Tim Erixon before him, Calgary HAD to trade him or they would have lost him for nothing. Unlike the Tim Erixon deal, however, the Flames made out like bandits on trading Fox. Hamilton was an odd duck who didn't fit in with either Boston OR Calgary. He's ok but the story I heard was while the Flames were on the road, while they going out to dinners together, team building, etc he preferred to go off and do his own thing alone. Not good for building chemistry with your team. Lindholm and Hanifin are good young players signed long term in Calgary. I don't care how good Fox will be, Calgary did VERY WELL getting rid of Glencross who they weren't bringing back anyway.

Flames won all of the deals. Glencross was terrible at the end of his tenure with Calgary, he was unplayable. Kylington shows a lot of promise, especially playing under a guy like Giordano. Hamilton had great offensive moments but his defensive lapses made me want to rip my hair out, he just didn't get it. Seemed like every goal that was scored against us, you'd watch the replay and Hamilton would be way out of position. Ferland was the same as Glencross/Brouwer/Neal/Lucic big body that should be in front of the net but the game is changing so much that he's not as valuable, so turning him into a 30 goal scorer is a MAJOR WIN. Hanifin is still young and he isn't on an insane contract that lots of young players are getting nowadays so if he can just continue to develop and bring a level of consistency, then you'd love that.

Adam Fox was never going to sign with the Flames, so trading him for that value versus letting him walk is a pretty solid deal in my opinion.

This will probably get lost in the comments, but I attempted to make my own Mike Richards trade tree and discovered that it involves guys like Schenn, Simmonds, Guentzel, Pitlick, Grant, Morrow, and smaller pieces in the Seguin and Taylor Hall deals. I have the whole tree written down as accurate as I could make it if Steve or anyone from Sportsnet wants to take a look at it.

Not bad given Curtis Glencross retired after that season. He was a great Calgary Flames player for most of his time in Calgary.

As a Flames fan, losing Hamilton sucked a lot but Elías Lindholm is very good for us and he is very versatile player who can play as 1rw, 2c or 2rw as well. And there is hope for Hanifin as well, i think he can be like Jacob Slavin type of level defenseman, so overrall the trade was not bad at all, but man Hamilton is so good and still could been very useful for us

The contract we signed for Lindholm is a steal, Hanifin is still a good young option on the top 4 too

Hanifin is not a defensive dman lmao who keeps saying this he’s absolute cheeks on d

@@Sanchezy804 Hanifin has the tools to be a defensive dman, but he's still working on the toolbox. But he's still only 23, and there's only one way to make a player into an effective defensive player: lots and lots of experience. I suspect he'll be pretty solid by the time he's 28 and for years thereafter.

@@tomsimon297 I’m very doubtful of that he has all the tools to be a offensive dman I don’t get how people can’t see how bad he is defensively
@tomsimon297

@@Sanchezy804 Like any young dman, how good he looks defensively depends a lot on his partner. He spent a lot of time with Hamonic, who was making every partner's numbers worse. Hanifin-Andersson turned out to be a much more effective pairing, and I suspect the Flames will run with it for some time.

Yeah I hate to tell you Steve, but Carolina and Calgary didn’t pass on Fox, his agent came out and said he only wanted to be in New York, so the Canes got the best deal they could from the Rangers

Looking who Boston passed over on that 15th overall pick....ooof....Barzal.. Boeser, Aho, Chabot.. Thats an interesting new video idea, go over previous drafts and look at players that ended up being stars that were passed over for busts by teams.

Boston had 3 picks in a row. The next 3 players drafted were Barzal, Connor and Chabot. How does a team miss so badly!

Great analysis of trade. Calgary didn't "pass" on fox. He didn't want to play there. Kylington had great year last yr. This yr AOL for whatever reason. Hamilton? Didn't want to be here. We got 2 very very good players from canes. BTW that one playoff series we won in 2015 was only one from 2003 until 2022. Yeah!
