Thanks for this detailed look at the swing. I play tennis (40 yrs) and golf (30 yrs). As a young teen nobody had to tell me how to serve, it came naturally. The racket head follows a looping path behind the back. There is no start/stop, back and forward. Combined with legs driving up, shoulder rotation, and pronation at impact, it results in a lot of head speed. Contrast this with golf. The generic swing looks like two motions, one back and one forward (backswing and downswing). Transition is notoriously challenging; I’ve always struggled with it. When I first saw MW swing I thought ick. As I’ve looked into it the last couple of days, this video in particular suddenly made me think of my tennis serve. There is never an issue with tempo when I serve, unless I pick up a much lighter or heavier racket. Even with different intentions of pace and spin, tempo is not a difficulty. My intuition about the golf swing after seeing this swing breakdown is that if the weight at the end of the lever never “stops” (I know it doesn’t literally) the rhythm will not be broken, and the physics can “happen” without manipulation. I have to experiment with this.

I am a 4 handicap and have a very similar swing to Matthews. I have found in match play that having an effective yet unique swing has it's distinct advantages. I have noticed through the years that instinctively my competitors, upon see the unique swing, subconsciously and mistakenly think to themselves "with a swing like that this guy doesn't belong playing against me." And at some point during the round they realize that you do have game. At that point they start to put pressure on themselves to keep up which means that I have achieved a mental advantage. It is great to hear, at the end of the match, a competitor say "I shouldn't have taken you and your game for granted". I know that Matthew has experienced the same from his competitors.

Thanks for a comprehensive breakdown, of the Wolff swing. The major thing that resonates with me is his takeaway and backswing and his right elbow position at the top. Because of an issue with shoulder mobility, I have never been able to get in the classic elbow/forearm pointing up position that my Coaches wanted me to get in. Now copying the Wolff move as best I can, taking my club and hands on the outside of plane I find that in transition to the downswing that my elbow automatically gets into the correct position and starts in internal rotation. So effectively going on the outside in the Backswing automatically pulls you on the inside in the Downswing, Brilliant!

I was mucking around with getting my right elbow out like him at the range the other day, and I was hitting them well. My bad shots were caused by lack of rotation on the backswing. Getting that right it's amazing how well you strike it. I'll be doing at bit more of this.

@@rudycramer225 I'm glad that it was working for you at the range👍 I had forgotten about this vid (over a year ago since I watched it) and my original comment. These days, I have added in the "high hands at address" that Bryson uses and I have also added in a "strong left wrist" at address. You basically externally rotate (anti-clockwise) your left wrist so that you preset the "Cupped left wrist". This presets a VERY strong (closed) clubface and forces you to come from In to out in your downswing. Combining Matty Wolff & Bryson's swing looks a little odd and is certainly unorthodox, but I'm now able to SMASH into the back of the Ball and produce a high/straight Ball flight with lots of compression!

Adam…not sure what you did, but my lightbulb has gone off now…you’ve just provided the missing piece to the puzzle…after about a decade going through two hip replacements, shoulder surgery, and back issues, my swing got really flat (Harold Varner III flat) and I was losing all sorts of power and height…my coach and I have been working on getting it more upright…it’s getting better, but the parametric acceleration with the water skier, and your article on the topic that I also found has made it crystal clear for me now! Appreciate the tips!

All of these extra movements create longer moment arms and subsequently greater inertia. I used fo swing like Matt and when I was doing my residency in Dallas, Hank Haney convinced me to get rid of all of that. 30 yrs later, I have re adopted my Matt Wolf swing and will go from a 6 to a zero hcp in about 3 months. I quit for 10 yrs and now have a son that wants to play D1 golf. I belong to a club in Baton Rouge and a Fazio course in North Carolina. I like the game again, because I can swing my swing. Thx M Wolf.

This is something that I was taught years ago by a seasoned ex Ryder cup player. that the backswing should be on the outside. The club head is on the outside. Of the hands but the downswing..wow, unbelievable on the inside. Looping. So you’re attaching the ball on an inside path. This is a method that is classic but not exactly been taught by pros. Because it’s hard to master. Lots of practice. And tuition. Great demo video of a very unusual swing but very effective.

Why is it when I use the Matt Wolff / Juju swing I smash the ball ? I feel like it automatically gets into the slot. As if the club had such a whip on it. When I swing a traditional swing my sequencing is always off. One day it’s good then the next day I can’t find that same swing. But when I try to mimic this swing I hit it my best. Any advice is much appreciated. I’m 50 y.o. Been playing 25 years.

You give a very good analysis of his swing, but then suggest we shouldn’t copy it. Why shouldn’t we? Wolff has been allowed to develop his own way to swing the club and not forced to follow the ‘proper’ way. Good luck to him, it’s a breath of fresh air.

The main thing Wolff is able to accomplish is swing with consistent tempo and finish with perfect balance. Every single swing when he comes through and finishes his swing he can hold his finish all day if he wants. Tempo, timing and balance trump everything in the golf swing and while you're better off swinging in an orthodox manner it isn't a requirement.

What he does exactly the same as a baseball pitcher. Like a pitcher, we should shallow down the pitching arm and scapula toward the back and have the weight distributed arround the right leg to align the arms. This is just like the pitcher kicks away the leading leg to allow the standing leg to jump forward. If there is any weight shift,it should be shift to the trailing side by roll back the shoulder and upper chest. The left leg is on loosely stand all the way, the prove is the leading foot rolls around the heel.

So much for the new swing in the Modern Era. There's a lot of moving parts here, especially with the baseball waggle to kick off his swing. I'm just wondering if that's too much to think about on the back nine on Sunday during The Open.

You're actually WAY off!. He says he thinks about nothing in regards to his swing. There are NOT a lot of moving parts , because his shaft is so steep at the top, all he does is rotate with passive hands and it causes the shaft to shallow out. Amazes me how people think that under pressure it won't hold up!?. He won 6 times this past season in college and has already won on tour. His biggest strength is how repeatable and consistent his swing is.

Didn't notice before but he stalls big time coming into impact. He's got amazing H/E coordination.
@adamyounggolf1
@adamyounggolf1 5 жыл бұрын
In 3D, every top golfer will slow their hips through impact. This is because the more distal segments (upper body, arms, club etc) are accelerating. It's very similar to if you were to be on a swivel chair, pick your feet up and try to swing forwards with your arms very fast. Your lower body would actually work in reverse. You see this with baseball batters and even Rory exhibited a hip reversal in his earlier days
@mudddge
@mudddge 5 жыл бұрын
@@adamyounggolf1 I understand the proximal deceleration concept quite well. There's a difference between slowing and stalling, which is what MW does (he has to, because he comes up on his toes). A good example of the concept would be Dustin Johnson, who slows down but doesn't stall through impact.
@adamyounggolf1
@adamyounggolf1 5 жыл бұрын
Yup, some players are more rotation, others stall more. Some even reverse the hips (old Rory). Koepka is a great example of a player who stalls too, and can get up on his toes - so we would have to question whether it is a bad flaw, or just another one of those things filed as irrelevant. I'm more concerned with the trajectory of the lead shoulder.
@mudddge
@mudddge 5 жыл бұрын
Adam Young everything that happens in the golf swing is relevant. It's a question of what's optimal vs what some golfers can get away with due to talent, hand eye coordination, and practice.
@adamyounggolf1
@adamyounggolf1 5 жыл бұрын
True, but a lot of what people class as "getting away with it" is actually something that helps. Just because it's has fewer moving parts, looks simpler or more symmetrical doesn't make it more technically consistent/better.

Fantastic video. . glued to it and watch it over an over. This video helps prove that the greatest golfers have a 'gift from God' that allows them to time their swing so as to control the face of the club better than others. The rest is just course management and control of one's mind. (Just my humble opinion.) This cannot be proven, but Wolff probably would have the same or maybe even better results if he went with a classic swing. . .In the end it really does not matter all that much because of his 'gift.' What is fascinating to me is that no one ever talks about how tall a player is or how strong they are when it comes to distance. They always seem to assume that a guy 5'10" at 150 lbs could generate the same clubhead speed! LOL the longest hitters may not be big but they are always strong.
@adamyounggolf1
@adamyounggolf1 5 жыл бұрын
Big hitters can also use a lot of mechanical advantages. For example, Wolff uses the waterskier effect 3 times in the swing to generate huge speeds. Sadlowski is another example of a golfer who uses this effect to create massive speed even despite being "smaller"

@adamyounggolf1

It can mean a number of things, depending on what you are describing. Some look at shaft pitch, some talk about Angle of attack, some talk about clubhead trajectory (functional swing plane). The latter is what I prefer to discuss, although all can be relevant things to look at.

Matt Wolff's swing is not unique: I tried it 2 years ago and I liked it. It's just something I did on the driving range out of the blue. In fact, it's a tennis swing brought to golf. Essentially, Matthew Wolff is hitting a ground stroke. Beyond that, in today's world, clubs & balls play such a huge role. I'm a senior and I was losing distance until I was fitted for a set of King Cobra irons with a senior shaft. I also bought a King Cobra adjustable driver. The more I hit those clubs, the longer & straighter I became. I even started working in a little draw with the clubs just to amuse myself. Then, out of the blue, I thought, my back is hurting today, so I'll try the tennis ground stroke approach. I gained ten to fifteen yards with most clubs and hit the beeje$u$ out of my driver. My point is that there's nothing odd about hitting a ground stroke in tennis & there's everything good about getting fitted with the right clubs for your swing. I'm 75 and this tennis stroke swing does not hurt my back, plus I hit the daylights out of my golf ball.

The traditional golf swing is so difficult to do correctly that only a small percentage of amateur “golfers” ever master it. This new, or reinvented, golf swing that the creator named the JuJu swing is much easier to learn. Wolff’s swing seems to be a version of that swing. As noted in this video other pro golfers have used a version of this swing successfully in the past. It’s a easier swing to learn. Natural Golf supposedly had an easier flat swing that was supposedly easier to learn. It seems that any golf swing requires some degree of athletic skill and sense of timing. A golfer either has that skill or they don’t. Struggling to break a hundred isn’t fun and eventually a lot of duffers just give up the game in frustration. Additionally, the game is progressively becoming more and more expensive. Cost plus the skill to enjoy the game is taking its toll. In my area several golf courses and private clubs have closed.
