Let’s fix some common problems you can have in your carp fishing.
Although carp fishing isn’t difficult to get into, there are lots of details that you need to get right in order to maximise your chances. Over the years I’ve made every mistake imaginable and learned my lessons the hard way! During this tuition session with one of our guests, we went through some issues and questions that Niall was wrestling with which helped to clear his mind of doubt so that he could put an effective strategy into place and catch consistently all week long.

12:42 Fishing a margin with a bait boat
15:29 Are you putting too much bait?
17:10 How long to leave the rods for?
19:46 How to fish a slope?
22:44 How accurate do you have to be?
24:07 How to bait up?

Hi Matt, great video with a lot of tips and knowledge, quick question the pellets we see briefly in the video at about 15:34 are those the "LE GOUESSANT - Carpe Extrudé "Purple Pellets" if so in which way are yo using them and which mm are you using? Thanks in advance :D
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler 8 күн бұрын
Hi mate, those pellets are Le Gouessant 7mm Complementaire 24% protein. We use them as feed pellets and I sell them to guests. Niall was using them to bulk out his bait boat traps of Nash particles, and used either a couple of tigers or a 20mm Scopex Squid boilie on the bait screw.

I've found wetting the spool helps, but also found the reel gets stiff when the crap in the water gets clogged in your reel

I'd been using Fluro exclusively for ~12 -13 years but your recent-ish vids on moving to Mono convinced me to try it so i to got the new Nash Armourline. I spooled it up exactly the way you showed in your recent vids and explained to the chap just now and i'm seeing line starting to twist appear. I am a backwinder after having gotten used to it with Fluro to try and escape the twisting which Fluro hates. I'd had enough of the line twist issue with Fluro which is why i went back to mono and while it's not as bad so far it's definitely an issue with this line so far. I'll have to check my rollers but pretty sure they were still moving when i checked a few weeks back.

Hi mate, I suggested to Niall that he focused on keeping the line wet before he actually did anything (opening the bail arm, casting, boating a rig out etc.) When mono gets dry it behaves quite badly but wet mono behaves quite nicely. Niall found that by keeping his line wetter it behaved much better for him. Certain monos can take a set and go a bit bongly (technical term 😂) with repeated casting. The Bullet is an example of this but I found that by regular cutting back a couple of metres, this problem is easily solved. We definitely had to cut back the Armourline to get him back on track. The most important qualities in any line for me are strength, abrasion resistance and sinkability (if that’s a word lol.), Armourline ticks all these boxes and if you keep it wet you should get on well with it. I certainly have no worries about spooling up with it when my stock of Bullet runs out.

So i have a question... i use lots of different brands of line.. had used ESP syncro for years as i just trusted it and found it reliable... but i have now switched to FOX exocet. Does this method of spooling up apply to all spools of mono/ fluro where the spool is sat up like that? Or how do you identify the correct way to spool it onto the reel?

It works well with everything I’ve ever tried. This video should help you to work out whether this upright spinning spool method is appropriate or not: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aobFZ2eHjKp5b8Usi=flkXASy2djklCMDt

My day job is to help our anglers be more successful and no matter how good or experienced you are, there is always more to learn in this sport. Niall is an experienced angler and this was his 2nd visit to Beausoleil. He’d already done a tuition day with me on the first trip but there was so much more he wanted to get into, so he booked a 2nd session on this trip and we filmed some parts of it. During the week, Niall put into practice all the tips we covered and he went on to have an incredible week with us catching the largest carp in the lake (a mid fifty) along with a hatful of other 40lbs and a monster catfish. It was the best catch report of the year and Niall is still living off the memory of the session many weeks later! More information about my tuition sessions here: www.frenchcarpandcats.com/carp-fishing-tuition-france/ A note about Niall’s struggles with the Armourline. Once he’d learnt to keep it wet, he got on much better with the material and the level of coils and twists were significantly reduced. He loved the way it sank and it’s testament to the strength and abrasion resistance of the material that it was able to survive a 1.5 hr boat battle with one of our massive catfish.

Funny old thing line twist. The line has to be twisted somewhere! If it is straight when it's cast of the spool then when you wind in it is twisted onto the spool. And vice versa, ie if not twisted on the spool the when cast the line has twists. Also the twists can be transferred along the line when you real in!

All mono gets dry and dry mono is more prone to twists and coils, especially when it’s 0.45 mm diameter. In the video I showed Niall how to keep the line wet before casting, opening the spool, or boating rigs out and once he started doing that, he got on great with the line and it was good enough to survive a 1.5hr boat battle with a massive catfish.

I’d keep it really simple mate, just a running ledger and a mono hair rig and a bottom bait straight out the bag. Cast around and feel the lead down. If you get some kind of thud then you are fishing. I've got a full river carping video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mmi3e6h3qZqboc0

Would it be possible to use a wet cloth rather than dunking the whole spool in water or have you not noticed any negative effects by doing this?
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler Күн бұрын
In the past, during long periods of hot weather I’ve used sweatbands soaked in water to wrap around the spools when I’ve had rods out of the water and this does work well. A wet cloth draped over the spool will help but it’s not quite as effective. I have no qualms about dousing the spool with water. Just avoid soaking the reel body itself as if it’s not sealed it can shorten the life of the reel.
@Faithless655

@@matthewcollinsangler good point, I suppose if you compare how much water you're putting on the spool to how much water hits your reels in the rain it's probably relatively minor. Plus there are anglers that put their rod set ups out in the lake for various reasons have to contend with lake water as well. Thank you for replying

Hi mate, I made a video on this years ago and I still use the same method today: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aobFZ2eHjKp5b8Usi=sZU0lTud3Zcmb7pF I’ve re-spooled hundreds of reels with heavy line (which can be tricky) and this has always worked with lines from a variety of manufacturers. In the video I explain how you know if you are doing it right or wrong. Here’s a more recent video of me using the same method to split a spool evenly across three spools: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJ_aeZ-coaamepIsi=21mMsF5GNfvYx4k- If your line is already twisted then watch this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppeUnmt8f66DbM0si=Y5ZJidRqOeHqpOrs Best of luck, Matt.
