Must admit that I’ve tried every looklink material going during the past 30 years. Started out with mono in the 80’s, did the whole snakebite and mantis thing, fluorocarbon, combinations of both - then came full circle back to mono. When I’m lying on my bed in the dead of night I just KNOW that a mono set- up is definitely presenting ok. Today, I’ve chucked out the lot and am just using Amnesia. And I’ve caught all my biggest on it. I honest don’t think hooklink material makes a blind bit of difference- won’t be going back to anything more complicated

Can u use it near snags
@matthewcollinsangler16 сағат бұрын
I’m not a fan of snag fishing… My rule of thumb is to never fish closer than 10m. If you’re fishing with a tight line and locked up, you can push that to 5m. I used to fish closer and I lost fish. Nowadays, I bait short of the snag and draw the fish to me, it’s safer and more effective. If there are snags where you’re fishing, you might be better off with a swivel based running rig connected by a rotten bottom (see this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/poTNhWWthbCnitk). If something bad happens, the fish will be able to break off the lead easily. Hope that helps.

Can you recall what hook beads you're using here or what brand you're using now ???
@matthewcollinsangler2 күн бұрын
Hi mate, nowadays I use the Nash tungsten hook bead (mostly the medium sized ones). They are a good size match for a size 6 Chod Twister. If you are using smaller hooks and mono down to 0.35 you can use something like the Nash blowout tubes (I use lots of these for my D-rigs) or even just a bit of silicon rig tube cut down. Anything that grips the shank and kicks the hair out will work.

Hi Matthew. My question to you is this, when you are filling a big pit reels with line these days a lot of them have the what they call SLOW OSALATION which helps with good line lay. I have bought 2 Shimano 10000 bait runners for my partner because he has just started fishing and finds them easer to use than front drag reels. What i would like to know please, is there a way to put line on to achieve a good line lay? I use a plastic cereal container to put my line in when redoing my spools.
@matthewcollinsangler3 күн бұрын
Hi Ray, yes a plastic cereal box that holds the spool upright is a good option for sure. To get a good line lay, fill the container with enough water so that it comes halfway up the spool and then spool it on under tension by holding the line between your fingers while winding. There is a bit of a technique for doing this and we will be covering this in more detail in another spooling tips video soon. Best of luck, Cheers, Matt.

to be honest, I never had confidence in the d rig, I only had confidence in the regular hair rig, after watching your videos I decided to try the d rig and I can tell you that the results are excellent, I didn't lose a single fish, I didn't miss a single bite, so far in 4 fishing trips I have caught 12 fish including carp and grass carp. the only problem is that after almost every fish d is deformed. thank you so much... and keep making great videos
@matthewcollinsangler3 күн бұрын
Hi mate, very nice 👍 For me, any mono rig should be considered as one use only. After any capture, the hook will be slightly damaged and therefore blunt anyway and mono is more prone to damage than coated braids but it costs a fraction of the price so just change them out. The mono will also deform as you’ve seen so again, it needs changing. Whenever I go fishing, I head out with ten of these tied up and then just swap them out as necessary. I don’t even bother to look at the hook. I do all that when I get home. Yes you will spend more money on hooks but you’ll catch loads of carp so I’d say it’s worth it. Cheers, Matt.
@gaba_ribic3 күн бұрын
yes in your pond i would also change the hook after every fish because the fish mouth is hard due to rocks and gravel but i fish a big shallow lake with two feet of silt whit no snags and the average fish is not big i know you like to sharpen the hook but i don't mess with a slightly blunt hook, so I'd rather put a new one. i undarstend your messige, aniway good luck on your next fishing trip, all best...

How long does it take for processed baits to get broken down naturally.
@matthewcollinsangler3 күн бұрын
Do you mean, how long do boilies last if they are not eaten? That’s an impossible question to answer because many factors affect this. We use Scopex Squid at the lake because it’s formulated with water soluble stabilisers that leach out over 24/48 hrs (temperature dependant). After that, the baits effectively behave as freezer baits would. Breakdown time of freezer fresh baits depends on how hard they are, how big they are, what other species are present and water temperature is a big factor. As a general rule of thumb, if the baits remain uneaten and intact, after a week or so bacteria will begin to attack the boilie and after another week trapped gases will cause it to bob up to the surface where it can be eaten by birds, rats and anything else. I used to make my own freezer baits and occasionally I’d find one bobbed up in the margins. Since we switched to Scopex Squid we see no evidence of this. Everything that swims loves Scopex Squid so un-eaten bait is something I don’t have to worry about.

Wait so you are supposed to loose a lead every time you hook a fish?
@matthewcollinsangler4 күн бұрын
Lead clips were designed to drop the lead on the take but of course it doesn’t make sense to do that either for the environment or your wallet. I hate dumping leads and I don’t fish with lead clips. They should only be used in very weedy waters where you have to dump the lead to safely land the carp. I made this video because. Most of my fishing is done with some form of running lead system which the carp find extremely hard to deal with and I don’t lose the lead. There are plenty of examples of safe and effective running lead systems on this channel. Here are some examples: kzbin.info/aero/PLHQUkuWLN6meZucvGzWoXCl774le4hw-J

I use both. Bait runners simply have more features and companies that don't make reels themselves (Nash, sonik, fox etc) struggle to make them reliable. Hence videos like this trying to convince us that they are not useful. The loosing fish on connection is absolute rubbish. You want reel that is designed and made in house them get a Shimano (not budget ones), daiwa or okuma.

Do you put anything over the hook point like foam when using the bait boat. To stop the hook going into a bollie or bit of hemp.
@matthewcollinsangler4 күн бұрын
Hi mate, I used to do that all the time but during Covid I ran out and I couldn't get any so I stopped doing it. My results never changed so I dropped the practice. The quality of PVA nuggets varies tremendously. Some are great, others are absolute rubbish and will cost you fish (I got some out of the lake this year after some guests had left and they still hadn't melted, just bobbed on the surface!). I would test them yourself, in a big bucket pinched onto a rig to simulate how you actually fish. It’s the only way to understand how they are working and whether they are helping or not. If I was fishing a weedy water, I’d consider using them but only if I didn't have a better option.

Matt, I really have to thank you for the ‘sermon’ regarding the barbless hooks. In the meantime, I have completely exchanged my hooks to barbless. I can't tell any difference at all. I haven't lost any more fish or experienced any other problems, so I can absolutely confirm your experience and that of many of the comments here. A complete switch to barbless is absolutely worthwhile. Aside from carp fishing, I also use barbless hooks in feeder fishing in the meantime, not even being obliged to it in any of the waters. Removing the hook is such a breeze compared to the same hook with barbs and the ‘wounds’ are basically invisible and will heal in no time! I'm totally confident and I quite often fish at distances greater than 250-300m and weed belts. None of this is a problem at all. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to ‘convert’ anyone else yet because the guys all think too conservatively, but I hope that over time my successes will give them food for thought. Thank you once again for this enormously important inspiration! Cheers Alex

Hi Matt, I believe you are making a little miscalculation here. One turn with the reelhandle is 1m. That is probably with a fully loaded spool. The diameter of an empty spool is far less than that of a full spool of coarse. That means that one turn of the handle is far less than a meter. Correct me if I’m wrong 😉. Cheers Louis
@matthewcollinsangler5 күн бұрын
Hi Louis, I understand your observation but spool diameter is not relevant here, it’s about the distance travelled by the rotor of the bail arm, which is fixed 😊
@louislunterbusch55713 күн бұрын
Of coarse the distance of the rotor is fixed Matt. But that is not relevant here. Let’s presume one turn of the handle equals 5 turns of the rotor. Each turn of the rotor will put one coil of line onto the spool. One turn of the handle is 5 coils on the spool. In case of an empty spool the coils will be much smaller than the coils of a fully loaded spool. You can easily measure it.

Does it matter on the size of blow back tube,I used the Nash 0.5 since it was all I had
@matthewcollinsangler5 күн бұрын
Blow back tube size depends on the hook size you're using. I'd match a 0.50 blow back tube with a size 8 chod twister. It'll be a bit tricky to thread onto a size 6, doable just harder than the 0.75. I wouldn't worry too much about the palm test. It's not an accurate representation of how a mono rig works underwater.
