Hey Mathew! thank you so much for this tutorial! i'm having some trouble and i'm hoping you can help me. I'm halfway thu the tutorial, xcode builds out just fine, with no errors (on an iphone 8 btw ) but i can't see the spaceship anywhere. When the app opens.. i get a request to use the camera but when the camera turns on there is no spaceship to be found. any idea what i am doing wrong or why the space ship is hidden?

Great tutorial, will use it as a base to start playing with this markerless approach, thanks for sharing. Although one flaw is that as it does not know about the surroundings if you open the app in a room/area with obstacles the ships fly through them. Might see how this works with the Structure Sensor

Good question, I don't think we can easily. The project would need some time of image processing. I do plan to experiment with openCV here soon, so that might be the answer. Even so, we would probably not be able to do buttons without some type of image or marker.

Thanks dude. I am not 100% sure because I don't have a good Android phone right now but you should just be able to rotate and flip that texture until it looks right when you build out. I don't know what coordinates for sure so you will probably just have to try a few different orientations.

Thanks a lot. I can get this done on android galaxy phone. Just another question about AR, any idea to implement something like real world collision with the spaceship? And if I would like to track the real room size in order to generate corresponding size of spaceships, any tip to achieve this? Or it should be done on openCV? I didn't have much experience on tracking with phone. Will be appreciated if you can give me some advice.

Yeah I don't have much experience with it either, it could probably be done in some fashion with OpenCV but for better results you would probably need some kind of depth sensor like a project tango device.

No problem, but yeah it doesn't work great. I went over doing this in type of markerless AR in Vuforia in my latest video so you could try to replicate this using those techniques. Might work a little better depending on the phone you are using.

I never tried this on Android so I am not 100% sure on how to do it but it might be a combination of rotating the x and z to get the desired rotation but you will just have to play with it and see what works.

I have fixed it by deleting duplicate space ships and redoing them. May be they were colliding. Great tutorial though, enjoyed it. Have you tried EasyAR? It's a free Augmented Reality SDK with a unity plugin. Lets you have an app without the Vuforia logo. Thanks again

works fine but camera seems to be rotated a bit towards left initially and enemy planes seems to be kind of unstable (movement working find but with camera background it moves a bit here and there) any solution for that? even while rotating mobile, video projection seems a bit laggy

I ran into this problem before and I totally forget what the fix was. I think you have to call play() on the webcam texture again but I am not entirely sure.

That way it should keep the instance alive through various scenes. I think you need to have some type of check though so you don't create a new instance if there already is one or that might turn it off again.

Not for this example, you could put your own checks in, or the best bet is to buy a camera plugin on the app store to take care of the camera stream for all types of devices.

So, I am not exactly sure how to do this for cardboard and make it look good. You could try two textures 1 for each eye and just play with the orientation until it looks good, or maybe try added the google vr package to the scene and basically do the setup twice, once for each camera. You wouldn't need the gyro code in that case because google vr will take care of that part. Also, you wouldn't want an autotimer but rather cast a ray from the center of the screen and if the raycast hits a ship thats when you would shoot.

I put my 3d object directly in front of my camera, but when I build it on the device (Ipad), it aways appear at a 90 degrees offset so i have to turn to the right all the time to see the character. Any Ideas why is this happening?

Hmm, I don't know that I ever had that happen. You could use that statement where it checks if you are on a mobile device to move it back in front of the camera maybe. It might be doing the same thing that the whole plane is doing in the video.

In the video I explain how to handle if the rotation of the webcam is different. You might have to invert the x scale or rotate it around so its upside down in the editor but right side up on the on the phone. Either way I am doing a new markerless tutorial that will be much easier to follow, and should work on any device. Should be out in a few days.

Hi Matthew - Great tutorial and I'm loving your videos so far they're really fun and great learning tools. Following this tutorial, I find that when I deploy to my Galaxy S8+, my surroundings come out great and I can see around me. Not the best picture but it works. My problem is that the ship / models don't show up on the phone? It does on my Mac, but not when I deploy to the phone. Everything else is working fine. Any fixes for this? I scanned the comments but no joy! :(

Thanks for your tutorial ! Im trying to put a 3d model using the sample Ar/VR, i would like to put a persistent model in world and the user could mouve around but i tried many setup everytime my model is stuck with the camera and stick to the the view when i move in the room

For a persistent model in the world you are going to need a fiducial marker for that. I would just use Vuforia for what you are trying to do. That way you can move around in the world and the 3d model will be stuck to wherever the marker is.

Yeah you can do it for free, just sign up for a free apple dev license, you won't be able to publish to the store but you can at least put it on your phone.

I named my app Pew Pew! but the ships jump around a bit too much. They're not smooth. I wonder if this has something to do with the update function isn't in sync with the actual time.

I did all the things same as you did everything went so well but after blasting all the 4 spaceships new ones are not respawning

Hey nice tutorial.... I have a Question... What if i add a text (which counts successful kills) in collision script , then how to access that text from script. I mean how to refer it just from the script as we have not attached the collisionscript to any component hence we can not do drag and drop just like we did for firebutton. And if i drag text component into resources and then try to drag text component to collision script in inspector of bullet then null pointer exception is generated

you could just change the text from collision script. You could create a public GameObject and call it text object. Drag in whatever gameobject has the text component into that slot and then do something like textObject.GetComponent().text = killCount

From where can i get the killcount? as of now what i have done is i have added this line in the webcamScript in the update function (this gives me the correct kill count but i dont want to do it like this as it will be call so many times and not only when a kill happens) count1 = 5 - GameObject.FindGameObjectsWithTag ("Player").Length; kill.text ="Kills: "+ count1.ToString (); here i have used 5 planes hence 5 in the code. Can i have your email id please? I am kind of new to unity and dont have anyone to ask Questions thank you

Hey! I've tried following the steps for Android, but I'm unable to get a proper image on Plane(as it is inverted for iOS). Also the spaceship when it moves, gets out of the viewing frame on the camera. Pls help me do it for Android...Thanks!

facing issue with android.. camera plane rotation becomes (0,0,0) when the scene is loaded

Well, it doesn't work. I can see the camera texture but there are no enemies around the camera. SOLVED - My phone doesn't have gyroscope. It works on phones with gyro
