Just wanted to stop by and say thank you for this page. I’ve always wanted to get my boys involved in woodworking and they stumbled across your page and you have sparked their interest. They are building the snowflakes out of old fence pickets and are going to donate them to a thrift store, where the money from the sales will help shelter abandoned animals.

Made my first snowflake last night :) wife loved it. A side note to those who may have a miter saw like me (maybe mine is just old) my miter saw does not move to a 50 degree angle - little disappointed at first but was able to move forward using the table saw guide bar and setting it to 50 degrees - set the rip fence to the desired width and was able to make quick repeatable diamonds. ***Matthew P. your doing great, love the channel by far my favorite woodworking channel to watch, keep it up you have many fans!

Had the same issue. Rigged up a fence on the 90 degree plan and used the 40 degree miter as the compliment is 50 degrees. However, this is not very repeatable and my diamonds did not turn out as perfect diamond. But for personal holiday décor, these will be great.

These are so awesome! Your encouragement for people throughout is great. I’m a mental health therapist and I can attest to the fact that it’s the negative self talk, not the ability or talent to do something, that keeps people from ever trying! Good word man!

Thanks! I'm not a therapist... but I am a realist. The mind is a powerful thing... and you can choose to use that power for negative or positive things. Sometimes folks just need a lil reminder that we all go through rough patches and we are our worst critics... believe in yourself! I believe in everyone watching or I wouldn't work 14 hours a day 7 days a week doing this.

These are awesome I've loved woodworking all my life worked with some true masters when it came to trim carpentry and small woodworking projects well it payed off I had built a tiny home a few yrs back but never got it finished in February of this yr there was a electrical short in a surge.protector and my house burned to the ground! My fellow firefighters had a fudraiser auction for help with materials well with the help of a couple of my fellow firemen I'm 56 and the youngest of the 3 guys that helped we totally rebuilt my 16x36 tiny home in less than 3 months and it looks wonderful found a ceder mill a few miles from my house and got really creative with the interior it was a intimidating project for sure! but the satisfaction of building it yourself is absolutely amazing!!! Thanks for what you do teaching others your craft!!! P.S. don't ever be afraid to attempt anything life throws at you!! God bless!!

I've been watching your channel for a while now and my mind is overwhelmed with ideas. I have always been an outside-the-box thinker and creator. I'm a deck and screen porch builder with an endless supply of scrap wood and PVC products. I am powering up my first-ever wood shop this week and am still in the setup and design phase and tool collecting. I have to finish my own kitchen remodel first and then I will be balls to walls making stuff. I have some ideas for leftover 6in vinyl sleeves. as well as many other items. I was in the Imprinted sportswear business for a short 10 years before coming back to what I am best at so there are some crossover ideas I have. I wish I had some of that equipment. (vinyl cutters, heat presses, and such) The sky is the limit and you're truly only limited to your own time and desire to create. In my area, there is endless home-building communities and you can dumpster dive for material as well. It is unbelievable what they throw away.

Made mine today, took a few hours. I ripped all my boards from a scrap piece of 2×4 about 3ft long, cut the the diamonds, wings and mounting boards, white washed them in 2 different colors, made my template and then assembled. I don't think it will take me as long next time. 👍 👍 👍 . Next I'm going to make a couple dinner trays out of an old cedar log I've had laying around the house for about 6 years

I made 6 of these for Christmas... the assembly doesn't take long but the white painting of all the small parts takes a bunch of time especially with multiple coats... the staining wasn't bad... I probably got 6 hrs into them.. the ppl I gave them to loved them so I guess that's all that matters

It seems to me that it would work well to make the vertical snow flake arm extend longer to fit into a stand so it could fit on a mantel. Then, since it is getting a prominent display area, you could also put a little silver leaf on it to make it really upscale. If made from something like balsa wood, it could even be a tree topper. Thanks for the inspiration,

Thank you for making these videos, they are truly helpful and inspiring.

someone suggested a Makerspace (a location setup with tools), see if one is in your area and use it if you're able to. If i had to pick 1 tool to buy to get started, it'd be the jig saw. with it you can rip boards (long way, usually with the grain) and cross cut, you can cut circles and other odd shapes. best with all tools is to get a really straight board (or long level) so you can make a guide to put the jig saw against to always cut straight.
@sheilamartin880
@sheilamartin880 2 жыл бұрын
@@jetah50 thank you for the advice. All tips are welcome. A jig saw is one of the first tools on my list. I have some woodworking skills learned from hobby building with my father and shop class in school and I was really good at it but have never really had the space of my own to do it. Now the house I moved into has an unfinished "laundry room" that is the biggest room in the house that already has a workbench set up in it with some jigs the previous renter left behind. I don't have a way to haul everything back and forth to a Makerspace though as I don't drive and I also have to be able to work at my own pace and take frequent breaks because of my disability so I don't think that would be ideal for me but it may work out for someone else that reads this and is looking for the space. Once again thank you for the tips.

Eric, 50 deg cuts are also 40 deg cuts if you do the math and subtract 50 from 90 you get 50 and 40 from 90 is 50. I think it is just the cut goes the opposite direction. Good luck.

I almost had an excuse for a new miter saw because mine doesn't go to 50 degrees. Then I remembered my table saw miter gauge. You just have to remember it's set up differently from the mirror saw so it's 40 degrees, not 50. Also don't trust the scale on the gauge. Mine was off by 1.5 degrees! Talk about diamonds in the rough! 🤣 Thank you Matthew for helping this old girl learn a new craft.

Hey, on the wood glue not staining, true, but you can make it stainable if you mix saw dust with glue to make wood filler. It will be stainable after that. I’m living proof it works guys. Be generous with the glue and top off the gap you’re trying to fill with saw dust sand to your liking.

Matthew... not sure if it is new math you are doing but when i went to school $50 is higher then $45 dollars. At 12:33 You say if selling at $15 dollars plan on selling as a bundle. Or 3 for $50. They save some money. They save 10 bucks, just thought i would give ya a heads up. lol. Also another great video.

Matt, you left out that in the spring you can paint or stain them the color of flowers multi season marketing.

You really are the most inspiring woodworker I’ve ever found on KZbin. I’m about 6 months before I can start building. But this is definitely on tap for next year. I have one word to say…glitter. That would be my personal tweak. Thanks for every video you make!

On the first snowflake I would like to point out that the 50° doesn't make a diamond at the 2" mark. It ends up lopsided. I was able to get the diamond with a 52° cut however, but it makes the diamonds 3⅞" long point to point. Which is doable. Most of us dont have a high end miter saw that goes past 45° miters. If you have a standard Miter saw here is what you need. To get a diamond with that cut out of the 1¼" wide material, just measure out 1¾" past the blade after your initial 45° cut.

For everyone who are having difuculty because their miter saw guage only goes to 45, Just remember that the diamond shape is also a rhombus. That being said after you make your first cut at a given angle take note of that measurement. next you would advance your piece the same distance and make the second cut. Hope this helps.

My 11 year old son saw your coasters video, so far he made about 10 sets and sold 7 at $25 a set. All from some old treated 4x4 posts from a deck we tore down.

I need to get a new blade for my miter saw. Then I am definitely making these! Even if its just for myself. I do farmers market in the summer. Mostly quilted items. But a lot of your maker items would compliment my current booth nicely! And added benefit, my husband doesn't mind doing the cutting for me when Im building. He could have a nice stack for me when I get home from work and I could sand, stain, and assemble while I watch TV. 👍😊

Just a tip that i learned from my dad (who's the best carpenter I've ever known 💖) but I'm sure most of y'all know this already but I'm going to say it anyway just in case some ppl don't know it 😊 If you mix a bit of sawdust with your wood glue it will make it able to be stained. Although I'd still say to wipe up any globs just so it looks neater. This trick just helps so you don't have a fully stained piece of wood with bare wood colored joints showing👍😁 but like I said I'm sure most ppl already know this trick but I'm a total newbie so I thought I'd share in case there are any complete beginners like myself reading this❤
