This is fantastic. This man has a beast of a hurdy gurdy set up and talent that makes that instrument sound 1000x more versatile than I've ever heard it sound before. Incredible. Absolutely incredible.

This is SOMETHING ELSE! ... Just see and hear how Matthias and his beautiful, instrument, knees and calves, all become ONE, in an UNEARTHLY, INSEPARABLE UNIT!

did you just say that his knees and calves are beautiful?

Fantastic performance ! The hurdy-gurdy gets here its well-deserved nobility.

I must of watched this a dozen times. My favorite bit, his "coup de poignet" in the bit after 6:22. He makes the drone rhythmic by timing the acceleration of his hand on the crank. Brilliant.

That he takes a medieval instrument and manages to create such vibrant music with it is a remarkable achievement. No folksy artsy crap - just a full-throttle gush of energy. This guy is totally awesome!

I finally got a hurdy-gurdy. If I can eventually be even half as good at it as Matthias is, I'll be happy!

Watching this gave the the sudden urge to learn how to play one of these, but then I realized I would never be as good as Matthias, and I felt discouraged.

Watching this in 2019 with auto translate English is nuts. Google is picking up some language in the music and translating it. A lot of ah, hello, again, and the like from the first half. Who knows the language the robot was pulling from but it makes captions on a must these days!

O_O for those who dont understand what is going on he is using electronics to loop himself as well as distort the sound of the hurdy gurdy. Wow...this man is amazing not only at the instrument itself but he has a great sense of how to modernize an older folk instrument. Bravo!

its arguable that the video may not present the best representation of the instrument's sound quality, but based on this, you'd be hard pressed to find pickups that have such a natural tone

I love the way you use the electronics to record your own accompanyment while you are playing the live show. Just fabulous!! I especially enjoy the eastern European/ middle eastern sound. Interesting transition to some really funky jazz.

i think it v interesting that the range of the herdy gerdy is so vast, with the different models, i prefer the more medieval ways of playing, and love the rushian flok, but this is brilliant and taking the intrument to a modern level, awesome

I just bought his album called "Vielle à roue" from Mondomix, and was THRILLED to see that the piece he plays in the medley starting at about 1:54 I believe, called Chasen Senem, is on the album! I'm such a fan now!
@theogeny14 жыл бұрын
awesome! i almost went to see you play last evening at the tiempo cafe on johannesgasse, wien, but i felt too tired, so didn't make it. now i wish i had!
@hellspark16 жыл бұрын
really? i can't believe i never heard of it before. one of the coolest instruments, no doubt!
@dwilliss16 жыл бұрын
Actually, at one point you see him play one part and then push a button on the top. That part then keeps on playing while he plays the 2nd part. So I'm guessing the 2nd time through part one was just a "tape" (probably digital these days) delay of the first time time he played it. There are some obvious digital effects being applied, but still awesome.

Actually he is using a phrase sampler and envelope filter... so it has been electrified probably with transducer pickups...
@bathroomStallPoet16 жыл бұрын
effects dont require the instrument to be an electric one; only that the sound be mixed through a electric medium. he could have an effect loop in the mic's connection to the amp, no?
@boorch14 жыл бұрын
he's obviously using a loop pedal, an autowah (or more likely and envelope filter) and a harmonizer pedal.

I bought CDs of Matthias, but none deliver on the promise of this 10 minute clip -- the only piece of music of it's sort of which I am aware. Where can we get more of this?
@bossesg115 жыл бұрын
so does anyone know what kind of hurdy gurdy he is playing or where do get a good price on one. i looked at the site but they are all 3000 or more and the instructions to make one were rediculous
@bonerici16 жыл бұрын
he could be miking the hurdy gurdy through an instrumental mike, like a piezoelectric, run it through a preamp, a wah wah, and then on to the amp. it sure doesn't sound like a coil pickup.
@Oshidutako16 жыл бұрын
zomg that was a kickass solo XD I wish I had one of those, it looks and sounds like a viola/cello on crack.

Considering I've never heard a hurdy-gurdy played before, this was an excellent means of introduction. Good post. I have a question for anyone who can answer. It appears to be primarily a stringed instrument, but how does the crank generate the tone? Are the strings sympathetic or active? Someone please tell me everything you know about the instrument. If reply is too long for comment box, RSVP via pers. msg. Thanks.

and its probably a mic, not electric. though he does have a looping pedal
@bathroomStallPoet16 жыл бұрын
i could be wrong. to be honest im not sure if electric string instruments (like, with the bow) can get the same resonant bow tone, my opinion is based mostly on how electric guitars are totally different from acoustic ones
@hellspark16 жыл бұрын
obviously. lol its always cool to see someone modernizing traditional instruments. as mr brady once stated: "We'll f**k it up royal!!!"
