Friedrich wasn't in Vienna during the siege IRL. He was in Wiener Neustadt.

True.

However Wiener -Neustadt is close to Vienna, if there were Canon fire around Vienna, you could hear it from 10 km. However the film did not not mention the exact location, so it can be even in Wiener Neustadt too. During siege of Vienna there were only a small contingent of Black army around Wiener Neustadt, as part of a fake/diversionary operation. There were no real siege action (no infantry attack) just some cannons fired to the castle of Wiener Neustadt, and the artillerymen of the W. Neustadt returned the fire. Knowing all of that background, the film can be even correct.

Wiener Neustadt is still a part of Vienna though it’s New Vienna translated or like an uptown from Vienna being the main downtown but even so it’s relatively in Vienna ! I suppose that can still make a difference in a siege such as The King Raven inflicted back in the 15-16 century Europe!

Kunigunde shows so little emotion, except maybe the eyes. She doesnt even flinch anymore at the cannon blows. She has learned to keep quiet and obey, but has seen so much sorrow already. Is that why she disobeys her father? What does she mean she wont write bc she is to be married off. Its any princess fate
@Lily1127channel4 жыл бұрын
Yeah it is so weird that she disobeys and doesn't write to Max to ask for help, even though maybe that could be the only thing that saves them in the castle siege. Considering what could happen to such young girls when an invader army enters the besieged castle, I would have made her write that letter myself if I had been her mother in such a situation (and if I had also believed that only her request to Max could prevent the enemy.) It is weird that they present arranged marriages as something very bad Frederick does to his daughter, when it was sadly just normal back then. I mean, yes it's a bad thing and we know there were women who rebelled against it (Isabella I), but that was very very few women, most of them just did their duty to their country. To be honest, I think it was not the director's intention for Kunigunde to be so unemotional, I think the child actress is simply not good 😀 But maybe that's just how I see iz.

Kunigunde was indeed known for being a bit stubborn and rebellious. But as far as I know this was in later times after her marriage to Duke Albrecht of Bavaria. There were several conflicts with her husband and her father. Maximilian supported her in those difficult times. They always had a kind and loving relationship.

@@Lily1127channel I don't think the actress is bad. They just didn't give her any lines (until now). I know an actor doesn't need to speak words to act but still, at such young age...

@@Lily1127channel MAx could not help. Despite of the textile industry, the inland revenue of Burgundy was still much smaller than the revenues of MAtthias Corvinus. It was a long war of attrition, which based on paid mercenary forces, Matthias could supply his larger armies with food and gold, so money was a determinant factor in the success of the Hungarian king.

I just finished the series today! Altogether very nice and I always like to see more history shown. Mary‘s actress is really beautiful and I like how the cinematography showed her from beginning to end of the show. The story is a little too cliche for me and I felt so many things were already done in so many shows about European royalty in the early modern age. The character development of Mary felt flat with her own agency petering out more and more as the episodes went on. A lot of the scenes all felt very similar with either max talking about what he was going to do throughout the episodes or both Max and Mary worrying about the future. I feel that things like that were brought across enough and we didn’t need so many scenes of their indecision. Isabel’s decision to marry Fernando felt very real but with Maximilian, it felt a little soon. Not to say that it wasn’t cool though. Like when her lady sniffed Max 😂 The ending felt rushed. I would have expected one more episode to tie things up and also give the whole thing a proper flow. Like you said too, it is interesting why they had max supersede Mary in authority in burgundy. So I am curious about the decision making they had when making the Show. Overall, I give it a 6. Pretty good but not as good as say Isabel, which has a 9 for me.

Yes it was more about Maximilian, I think, than Mary. His character development was more elaborate, like a coming of age story. Mary's character writing was not that good. She was far too "feminist" in the beginning, saying she would rule alone, and then in ep 3 she just went completely submissive to Max. From the storyline's viewpoint, it was character inconsistency, from history's viewpoint, it was very inaccurate. To be honest, for me it was painful to see Mary so passive, compared to Isabel who was always so dominant. I would have preferred to see an Isabel&Fernando-like cooperation in ruling in Burgundy, which always happens to be closer to reality. In my opinion, the Max-focus (and sometimes strong bias) is due to the fact that the series was made by Germans and Austrians, and thus they focused on their important ruler, and Mary's significance was made to be overshadowed by Maximilian's. The miniseries format alone means that there is less time to explain everything in details, than in Isabel which was a long tv series, so of course it means thus different storytelling. So Mary's decision wasn't so well explained, but for me it was still understandable why she chose him at that moment. Also the characters were less elaborated, especially the supporting ones, but that is also due to the less screentime. But the end was indeed a mistake, I think. In my opinion, they should have just ended the series with Max's victory, telling about the further things (Mary's death, Max's future, etc) only with text at the end. Or, if they wanted to insist on Mary's death as the last scene of the series, they should have included all their 5 years together, and not just the first one, and have a 6- or 8-episode-long miniseries, not just 3. This detailed story about their first year, then just jumping to her death, seemed weird. All in all it was a good historical series for me, the best German-language one I have seen. The other Austrian historical miniseries, Maria Theresia, was a big disappointment for me, especially season 2. This Maximilian was very decent.

Yeah. It's kinda weird how Maximilian seems to despise his father sometimes, considering how much he took from Frederick in those aspects exactly that he criticises. Though maybe it is on purpose and it's part of Max's "coming-of-age" storyarch in the series.
